NCAT, partnering with the Southeastern African American Farmers Organic Network and Operation Spring Plant, has developed a handy visual tool for land stewards to find the most suitable cover crop plants to help achieve their soil health goals. Designed like the periodic table, the resource provides information on plant structure, root type, water demands, weed suppression, and other useful functions.

Biofumigants for Sustainable Soilborne Disease Management in Nursery Production
In Tennessee, innovative research into biofumigant cover cropping practices has provided nursery producers with new options for managing diseases while reducing workers’ exposure to chemicals. Adoption of biofumigant cover cropping by Tennessee nursery growers has the potential to reduce their reliance on chemical fungicides and improve soil health, but additional research is needed first.

The most significant thing that came out of the project was that we received so many requests from farmers across Texas and western states like California asking for more information on tagasaste. This is a challenging area environmentally, and there are a lot of problems here that need to be solved. The SARE grant gave us a leg up in beginning to look for solutions.
