Hey, you. I’m Sol and I’m here to tell you a little more about the community membership we’ve been rolling out the past few weeks and what the brick and mortar at 1018 Valencia means to me.

I first came to Silver Sprocket 4.5 years ago when the 1018 Valencia storefront opened, and was hired, as Avi and Josh put it, “Because we didn’t think we could get you to ever leave” and yeah, I’ve been working here ever since. When I started, I was very new to indie comics, but I would stop by the shop on my walk home from school, spending time reading comics I couldn’t afford and occasionally harangue Avi and Josh into carrying books on topics that mattered to me. I would almost always see the titles I recommended on the shelves a few weeks later. Before I even started working here, I felt like I mattered to the store.

This is a really long way of saying that I thoroughly believe in this place, not just as a store that sells indie comics and amazing zines, but as a space for community and finding one’s voice and place in the world. This monthly membership program would allow us to stay open as a store, and as a community event space and resource.

Without this membership drive, Silver Sprocket’s publication arm would remain open but the store would have to wind down its operations when our lease ends mid-2026. If you’ve ever come by for a personalized reading rec, borrowed our saddle stitch stapler, gotten fountain pen advice, celebrated a milestone, met an artist for a signing/reading…watched some ska show…I could go on, but if you’ve spent time in the store, you know that this is so much more than a bookstore for us; it’s a cornerstone of our local DIY creative community. This drive is to promote a locally based membership program that should allow us to remain as a resource to anyone to use. With your monthly support, we would be able to afford our rising rent costs, hire on staff, share more DIY publishing resources, and host even more amazing events in our frankly enormous space.

✍️ We strongly believe that having an indie comics shop with a focus on marginalized voices, queer people, and socially minded politics makes San Francisco a more exciting and diverse city and creates more opportunities for art and storytelling across mediums and communities.

We’ve spoken to shop regulars and friends about our economic uncertainties, and many of you have expressed a desire to see the space stay open here in The Mission! It’s heartwarming to hear, and we’ve decided to explore running a membership drive to ensure the store is sustainable going into the future.
