They said it was over, they said we were wrong…
New Shelves EP is out

Gosh. That took a while. Like what, 5 years? We started recording in 2013. After that I left Singapore, so things happened remotely, and we all know how long distance relationships work, i.e. not very well at all.
Anyway, that’s another story, and not why we’re here. We’re here because our spanking new second release is finally available. First place is Bandcamp. Subsequently Spotify and all of the other usual streaming services.
We think of this release more as an extension of our debut LP. All of these songs have been played live before, with the exception of Another Gurl, which has a new part written at the end of it. Something suggested by Alan Bok during the recording, and I thought, why not. We recorded all the new parts as they were written. It was an interesting session at Thom’s Loft, where for weeks I was fueled by beer and Red Bull.
This incredible cover art is created by Little Ong of fFurious. Oddly enough, we haven’t worked on a music-related piece since Silverspy’s third EP, and that was 1995.

So, We Took Some Pictures
Our buddy Little Ong from fFurious took some pictures of us. It was a riot. Probability dictates that at least one in four will pull a moronic face not fit for viewing. These two are the better ones. We had these taken on Record Store Day. No real significance. Some of use were going to be at Vinylicious so it’s really out of convenience. This is a back alley on Mount Emily. We could smell urine the entire time.

The World’s Unlikeliest Show
It’s unlikely to think you’d see múm and Wavves on the same bill. Now add Shelves. We are beyond chuffed.
I love múm and caught them in concert at the Esplanade in early 2008. But god, I never thought we could open for Wavves. I mean, it’s just one of those bands always on my iPhone. No one knows this, except maybe Patrick Chng who mixed our LP: ‘Take On The Word’ was the mixing reference for ‘It’s Always Summer’.
Thanks to Desmond Goh (Electrico, TypeWriter) for thinking of us, and cheers to 19 SIXTYFIVE for the invitation.

The Latest Show In The World
No question about it. Our latest show ever. Come for the after-after-party where Shelves will be closing. We start probably 2:30am. Or 3am. Or… it doesn’t matter beyond a point. It’s also our first gig with Daryl. We will play a good mix of album tracks and some off our coming EP. Also, a brand new song never-before-played-live. Expect raucous behaviour, weeping men, and broken hearts.
The audience may do better.

Meet Daryl of Shelves
What kind of music gets you most excited?
80’s sleaze and psychedelic rock mostly. But I’m a sucker for anything with sweet vocal harmonies and catchy melodic lines.
How did you first hear about Shelves?
Was asking Uncle Seah, from Roxy Records, if there were any new local records in store and he pointed me in the direction of Shelves debut LP.
Can you build a shelf?
With a couple wooden planks, hammer, and nails, I’m guessing I’d be able to put one together.

Last Hour of 2012
Nice close to the year. After an unbearably long and unsuccessful soundcheck, we had excellent bak chor mee at Boat Quay. Sat there for about two hours discussing Stephen Chow, Robotech, Kurt Russell, muscle cars and the movie Cobra. Caught a bit of Neverland resident band cover Muse on key-tar before we were treated to an hour of impromptu audience break-dancing. Of course, Shelves would later clear the dance floor.
Happy New Year!
