- About
This is a little project for me to wrangle with the repercussions of conscious and unconscious white superiority and aversive racism in speculative fiction – for me personally and how it’s affected my ability to write. Along with all the focus I find in books about femininity and food (denial of) and other needling tropes. So having had this journal empty a few years (Oct 27, ’07), it now has a purpose. The Conversations I Want To Have; are about being a writer and artist, of facing the blank page and struggling not just with the need to create and wondering what to create – but with the saturation in society that tries to say that certain people have no need to be reflected in the creation; in that reflection of the broader world in the first place.
All my life I’ve been a writer. All my life I’ve dreamed about professional publishing. And then suddenly there’s been this block, this grief at losing that dream because I don’t want to be a part of, or bend knee to, hollow, crumbling institutions holding on to a destructive, exclusionary, oppressive past.
Now I have all these questions and puzzles and need to find my way again. And it’s nerve wracking. If I do find the path that helps me write and still feel good about myself and like a positive force in my community, will I end up having to hide who I am? Right now I highly doubt there’s a professionally published book in my future under the pen name S.A. Willow.
