Explore Worlds of Food

Gastro Obscura brings a wide range of food cultures to your screen.

The parent site Atlas Obscura is a site more appropriate for our History department on the fourth floor, with its focus on geography, travel and several takes on history and other subjects specific to that department.

This is the home page as accessed on Thursday afternoon, 11/12/20.

One of their sub-pages though, Gastro Obscura, fits perfectly within our department and our large collection of recipe and other food culture books:

I get hungry just looking at this page!

As you can see, searching can be broken down by food category and culinary region. Here I have selected “Food Festivals” in “North America” and here’s what came up:

We need to add Eat This Book to the list of North American food festivals!

There’s a lot to like about this site, other than it’s focus on food. I changed my search parameters to “Fruits & Vegetables” in the region “Middle East” and came up with only two hits. The one I chose to explore is called a Medlar:

Hmmm…someone apparently believes referring to this fruit as “anus-shaped” increases the appeal.

So this fruit is unique enough on its own, but it also gives a few links to places from which you may be able to buy and/or taste the fruit:

There are many other fun aspects to this site, including the option to create a profile and add your own pictures and other content. Memphians could add as much Memphis-centric content as we can squeeze in, if we were to so desire.

Take a minute to log into the site and check out how much fun information about food and food culture is available.

Industrial Code Tool

A patron recently approached the desk to ask for listings of businesses in Mexico that distributed plus sized women’s clothing. I knew that I could help point him in the right direction with NAICS and SIC code information. One tool I found online was siccode.com.

1

The site is a bit ad-heavy and some information is for sale, but there are some helpful free portions as well. For example, we discovered the SIC code he sought was 5137. So we searched that and found this:

2

So this information can be helpful. Further, once I clicked the green tab on the right marked “Industry Description” it took me to this more detailed description of this particular industry:
3

When I scrolled down further I found specific market information, and listings of related 6, 7 and 8 digit SIC codes for similar industries:

4

Finally, when I clicked “Market Analysis—Sample Companies” for the company La Blanca here is what came up:

In the final analysis, this site is limited by the amount of ads and the for profit nature of it, but it could be useful to a point. At any rate it is good to know the tool, even with its limitations.

UNdata

From The Scout Report:

https://data.un.org

“The United Nations (UN) website contains a tremendous amount of data, and for some new users (and even those who are more experienced), it may be a bit overwhelming. Recently, the UN created this fine website designed to assist those who might need a bit of assistance with this whole process. On the UN Data site, visitors can simply type in their search terms, look over a list of popular searches, and even take a look at their ‘News’ section, which offers up a selection of helpful recent additions. Further down on the homepage, visitors can look through the ‘Database Coverage’ area. Here they can take advantage of some specially culled statistics, including data sets related to the World Health Organization (WHO), refugees, industrial commodities, and children. The site is rounded out by a ‘Glossary’ section, which offers a nice summary of each term that might be encountered while utilizing the site.”
