Admission to the exhibition is free for VHS members.

Beginning in 1898, the large collection of Thomas Jefferson’s private papers was given to the Massachusetts Historical Society (MHS) by the president’s great-grandson, Thomas Jefferson Coolidge of Boston. The exhibition is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view in Richmond papers that left Virginia nearly one hundred fifty years ago, following Jefferson’s death and the marriage of his granddaughter Ellen Wayles Randolph to Joseph Coolidge of Boston.

Jefferson gave to the world the American vision that “all men are created equal” and are entitled to the “inherent & inalienable” rights of “life, & liberty, & the pursuit of happiness.” Exhibition viewers will be able to read those words in Jefferson’s personal handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence, as well as in the draft of the Declaration as it was edited by his fellow committee members, and in a copy of the first printing of the Declaration distributed in Philadelphia in 1776. All three documents are extremely rare and are among the most important in American history.

Jefferson’s innumerable contributions to the nation’s founding and development include his service as governor of Virginia, as congressman, as minister to France, as secretary of state under George Washington, as vice president under John Adams, and as third president of the United States. He is revered also for his decisions to make the Louisiana Purchase and establish the military academy at West Point and for designing some of the greatest buildings in America.

Jefferson was not untouched by controversy. He hated slavery, which he called a “moral depravity,” and in 1784 he almost succeeded in passing in Congress a ban of slavery in the territories. But he continued to hold slaves at Monticello. One biographer has labeled Jefferson an “American Sphinx.” The Jefferson papers provide windows into his personality and motivations.

William Rasmussen, Lead Curator and Lora Robins Curator at the VHS, says, “Jefferson was interested, it seems, in everything—from the sciences to the cultures of Native Americans, from religious beliefs to gadgets at Monticello. He spoke five languages. What I find so extraordinary about him is the breadth and brilliance of his intellect. In architecture, for example, few Americans to this day have matched Jefferson’s accomplishments.”

VHS members receive complimentary admission to all special exhibitions. Admission for nonmembers is $10 per person. The exhibition will be on display through January 15, 2017, and is generously sponsored by Altria Group. The Private Jefferson is organized by the Massachusetts Historical Society.

The Virginia Historical Society (VHS)—a privately funded nonprofit organization—collects, preserves, and interprets the Commonwealth’s history, linking past with present to inspire future generations. The VHS is located at 428 North Boulevard in Richmond’s Museum District. Hours are Monday – Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. for the galleries and museum shop, Monday – Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. for the library. For more information about the VHS call (804) 358-4901, visit vahistorical.org, or connect with the VHS on Facebook and Twitter.

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds! Because the pipeline is adjacent to Tuckahoe Creek, which borders Henrico, public safety officials have had ongoing discussions to ensure residents are provided information about the incident.

The suspected leak is about 100 yards south of River Road on the Goochland side of Tuckahoe Creek. No Henrico property or waterway is directly affected.

Representatives of Plantation Pipeline, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and private contractors are on the scene, according to Henrico County.

Motorists traveling on River Road between South Gaskins Road in Henrico and Blair Road in Goochland are urged to proceed with caution and beware of construction vehicles entering and exiting the site. Temporary road closures may occur for the off-loading of equipment. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible.

Photo: Wikimedia Commons

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds! Thornton will accept the awards July 24 at the 2016 NACo annual conference in Long Beach, Calif. The NACo Achievement Awards Program recognizes groundbreaking programs and initiatives in 21 service categories, including children and youth, county administration and management, libraries, emergency management and response, and human services.

Henrico’s 28 awards, which stemmed from 35 entries, are the most of any county in Virginia for the 11th consecutive year and the sixth most nationally, behind Maricopa County, Ariz.; Los Angeles County, Calif.; San Diego County, Calif.; San Bernardino County, Calif.; and Montgomery County, Md. Each of those counties has 1 million to 10 million residents; Henrico has about 325,000 residents, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

“Henrico County’s departments and employees provide outstanding service for residents and others in the community every single day,” County Manager John A. Vithoulkas said. “Our continued success in the NACo awards program affirms the strong work ethic and culture of excellence that has long been a hallmark of Henrico government. Our employees are challenged to identify and solve problems, to innovate and to find better ways to meet the needs of our dynamic community.”

The Department of Community Revitalization won an Achievement Award and a Best of Category honor for “Home Maintenance Workshops,” a series of free classes that targeted low-income homeowners and provided money-saving tips for property upkeep. The workshops, held in 2015-16, covered such topics as weatherization, basic plumbing and electrical repairs, patching holes in walls and ceilings, landscaping and yard maintenance, and hiring a contractor. The effort was designed to help homeowners remain in their homes as they age and to decrease the demands on public and nonprofit service providers.

The Department of Human Resources won an Achievement Award and a Best of Category honor for “Fire Fit: An Intensive Focus on Firefighter Wellness.” The program was developed with the Division of Fire to help more firefighters pass an annual evaluation of the physical requirements needed to perform their duties. The number of firefighters who satisfied the benchmark increased 15 percent in 2015, after the wellness program was introduced.

Henrico has earned 576 NACo awards since 1985. The awards in 2016 recognize the efforts of 11 general government departments and Henrico County Public Schools (HCPS). HCPS collected nine awards, while Henrico County Public Library and Human Resources each earned or shared three awards — more than any other Henrico department or agency. Human Resources also earned at least one award for the 30th consecutive year, a feat unmatched by any other human resources agency in the country.

Home Maintenance Workshops, Department of Community Revitalization

Homeowners’ Association Website and Lookup, Community Revitalization

Parcel Project & HOPS, County Manager’s Office

Trash Time Capsule, Department of Public Utilities (DPU) and Keep Henrico Beautiful (KHB)

Social Media Video Education, DPU and KHB

Expanding Payment Options for Cash Paying Constituents, Department of Finance

Entry-Level Firefighter Hiring Process, Division of Fire

Virtual Operations Support Team Program, Fire

Energy Saving Projects Initiative, Department of General Services

Homegrown Diesel Tech: A Partnership of Schools and Central Automotive Maintenance, Henrico County Public Schools (HCPS)

Instructional Technology Website, HCPS

ZippSlipping into Libraries, HCPS

Parchment: The eTranscript and Credential-Management Solution, HCPS

PowerSchool: An Elementary School Parent-Portal Pilot Program, HCPS

Teacher Scholars’ Program, HCPS

The Locker: Developing a School Intranet, HCPS

Using Zippslip to Improve Pupil Transportation and Parent Communication, HCPS

Instructional Design Website: Making Instruction Easy for Teachers, HCPS

Creating a Living Culture of High Performance, Department of Human Resources (HR)

Fire Fit: An Intensive Focus on Firefighter Wellness, HR

Summer Camp Staff Orientation: Creating a Culture of Leadership, HR and Division of Recreation and Parks

Focus and Function Group Initiative — Breaking Down Barriers, Recreation and Parks

3 Books 4 Me, Henrico County Public Library (HCPL)

Literacy and Math Nights at the Library, HCPL

SuperHero Science, HCPL

The Danray Home, Henrico Area Mental Health & Developmental Services (MH/DS)

Moral Reconation Therapy Group, MH/DS

Faith Community Coalition, Police Division

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds! Admission is The Byrd's standard rate of $2.00.

The movie palace will also be opening its doors for a free theatre tour and Mighty Wurlitzer Organ demonstration. From backstage to the balcony, visitors can learn about the theatre's decor, rare marble and two-and-a-half ton crystal chandelier, original set of Brounet murals, and even its ghosts. Guests will then receive a private demo of the Mighty Wurlitzer theatre organ, witnessing some of the unique sound effects, all made from hand crafted instruments housed in four rooms over the proscenium.

The tour will begin at approximately 1:00 PM following the conclusion of Yankee Doodle Dandy. A proprietary house blend served exclusively at The Urban Farmhouse was created to appeal to a wide spectrum of coffee drinkers. Also being roasted and served are espresso blends (in both regular and decaf), single-origin coffees rotating on a seasonal basis, and a blend for iced coffee.

A renewed emphasis will be placed on educating both The Urban Farmhouse staff and clientele on both the fundamentals and the finer points of specialty coffee. “One advantage of serving locally roasted coffee is the convenient access to the knowledge and expertise of the people sourcing and roasting your coffee,” said Ironclad founder, Ryan O’Rourke. “Conscientious coffee roasters make great efforts to know each coffee inside and out, and being just around the corner from the folks who are serving it has tremendous advantages — for both

O’Rourke emphasizes an approach that gives equal attention to both quality and approachability for anyone and everyone. “We don’t ever want anyone — anywhere and at any time — to feel intimidated by coffee. We see no need for pretentiousness in coffee. It’s something that should be fun. Coffee should be a comfort beverage, and we believe you can roast, brew, and drink magnificent coffee while enjoying a bit of levity.” That levity is seen in some of Ironclad’s branding as well as in some of the wide-ranging events hosted at their roastery.

Ironclad Coffee Roasters, based in Richmond, Virginia, was founded in February of 2016. Their roastery is located in Richmond’s Scott’s Addition neighborhood. For more information, visit www.Ironclad.coffee.

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds! The severe storms brought high winds that toppled trees and power lines and caused almost 170,000 Dominion customers to lose power at the height of the storm–roughly one third of the company's Central Virginia customers.

As of 11:00 AM, Henrico Police have the following updates to share regarding infrastructure, roadways, and cleanup progress:

Trash pickup: Henrico County’s curbside trash collection is operating on a normal schedule today. The Springfield Road and Charles City Road public use areas are open and operating on their regular schedules.

Recreation & Parks facilities: Confederate Hills Recreation Center and Meadow Farm Museum are closed due to power outages.

Henrico County Public Library facilities: Gayton Branch, North Park Branch, Tuckahoe Area, Twin Hickory area and Libbie Mill libraries are closed due to power outages. However, Glen Allen Branch, Sandston Branch, Fairfield Area and Varina Area libraries have power and are open. For more information, please call Varina Area Library at 804.501.1980; phones lines are not working at other libraries.

Police encourage citizens to check the “Storm Recovery in Progress” link at www.henrico.us for updated information.

The county notes that while crews are attending to these as quickly as possible, they are unable to provide a time when any intersection or roadway will be open. Please be mindful of teams from Henrico Fire, Police, Public Works, as well as Dominion and VDOT, who are working the clear downed trees and downed power lines.

As a reminder, intersections with malfunctioning or non-working lights should be treated as a four way stop. Any downed lines should be considered live.

Citizens that would like to report trees or other debris in the roadway should call 804.501.4393.
