About Me.
Me in the studio
While I have been creating artwork for most of my life, I started specializing in architectural and home portraiture almost 35 years ago. It all began when my husband started his own construction company and we couldn’t afford to have someone else do our publicity work. Since I was the artist in the family, the task fell to me. Fortunately, I liked to work in pen and ink with a color overlay and this suited our purposes very well.
I taught myself perspective drawing and then expanded into working with other builders, architects, and realtors. Along the way came commissions for gift portraits, promotional portraits, and family home histories. I began doing juried art shows and had work in galleries.
It has been a wonderful experience over the years to be allowed to create lasting memories for so many people. I have been privileged to portray many different kinds of homes and buildings of my own selection and for my clients.
A few years ago I was finally able to set up a dedicated art studio with space for everything instead of just my large art table and some rolling shelves in the corner of the room. I get to look out at wild crane pond and often see deer, turkey, the occasional fox or coyote, and numerous birds.
Just for fun, I occasionally do animal portraits. Once in a while a change is good.

Why thank you Nuno. Your pen and ink work is lovely as is your experimentation with coloring it. I did see a great increase in my views this last week and you must have been the cause of it!

Thank you Denise. I had to dive right in all those years ago.Try reading some of Arthur Guptill’s books on pen and ink. He is quite wonderful.

Ruth, I love your work,and want to pen and ink. I can do some, I have
a hard time with the washes. Any tips on it, and how many do you layer wise.

Glad to hear from you Lois. I use both technical pens and nib pens. For the architecturals I use Koh-I-Noor .35. They are a little expensive, but the nibs can be replaced and you can easily get them on line. For the animals I switch back and forth between the technical and the nibs, depending on my mood. As I said above, Arthur Guptill has wonderful pen and ink books and well worth a look. Your library may carry one or two.
As for the washes, with watercolors, I usually ink first and then treat it like a watercolor. I may go back and touch up the ink if it seems to need it at the end. Many of the architectural are done with ink and hard (firm) faber castell pastels overlays. I ink first and then lay on the color. I use a glossy Krylon spray fixative over it and the colors pop. I haven’t used ink washes in a while, but when I did, I had a set of diluted inks premixed and held in old plastic photo canisters so I could work quickly. I hope this helps. Hi Ruth,
I was cleaning out a closet today and found a beautiful drawing of a small child picking flowers. It is signed “Ruth” and just for fun I decided to Google your name. Could this be your work? I remember bartering the art piece in exchange for a batik from Brazil at a fair at Indiana University in the mid 80’s. We loved the drawing as our boys were growing up. From Indiana we moved overseas and after a couple more moves the picture got put away until today when I found it! My boys are now men but it brought me sweet memories of when they were young!
Just wondered?

Hi, Linda. It could indeed be me. I did a few shows back then and I still live in the Bloomington area. I don’t recollect it now, but that could just be a senior moment on my part. I’m glad you still like it. My kids are grown too and I sell most of my artwork on etsy now.

We have so much in common. I teach art in a middle school, but do fine art illustration…love the local historical scenes and detail work.. also setting up to start linoleum cutting… doing it w/my 8th graders and it has brought back my passion. I can give the brush up for half a year to print.. so many ideas with mixing prints with illustrations. Have you tried transferring images yet? Anyway, enjoyed your work.

Thanks, Victoria. I haven’t done the prints in 30 years so it has been fun trying them again. I like the addition of the watercolors to the prints. So many possibilities. I am not sure I could give up the architecturals for too long. I do like a break though to do other things. I have ideas for prints but I need to get more blocks first. I am thinking about dinosaurs next. Maybe your boys would like that.
