In 2011, I turned 51. In September of that year, I woke up one morning with a dream fresh in my mind. I sat down at my computer trying to capture the dream in words. I wrote it down in the form of a poem, but I wasn’t sure what to do with the poem once I finished it. I used to write poetry, but I hadn’t written a poem for twenty years. I was pretty sure that I still had all of my old College and High School poetry somewhere, but I wasn’t sure where they were stored. After some research, I decided that I’d start an online blog. That new poem, based upon my dream, became the first post to this blog.
So, what about this blog, “It’s Just Words” about? This is just a place for my words, of course. I don’t have any lofty goals other than to collect all of my writings together. Mostly it consists of poetry, but some other stuff that i’ve written has been included. The posts are categorized. Poems are further broken out by distinct periods in my life (High School, College, etc) when they were written. Songs are broken into the distinct years when I composed and recorded the original music.
- Poetry written after starting this blog (at 51)
- Poetry written when in College and as a Co-op Student (1978 to 1984)
- Poetry written while in High School (1976 to 1978)
- Songs composed in 1981
- Songs composed in 1982
- Songs composed in 1983
- Songs composed in 1984
- Songs composed in 1987
- Dreams
- lists
- life stories
I started writing poetry my sophomore year in senior high school. Initially inspired by my pretty teacher and a fascination for the alliteration of Anglo Saxon poetry. I quickly found my own voice writing simple verse filled with alliteration and rhyme. As you read my latest poems, you will note that my poetic style has never really changed over the years. After High School, I kept writing until a few years after I graduated from college. The last few years of college, I also put some of my poetry to music and recorded it. In college at ISU, I took a creative writing course. My professor, Karl Barnebey, instructed us to write as much as we could, even simple little things like lists, a daily diary and descriptions of dreams. Writing down my dreams was a lot of of fun, so I’ve made some efforts to continue to capture dreams for this blog.
I also want to include bits and pieces of stories from my life. Perhaps not of much general interest, but rather written with my kids or grand-kids as the intended audience. Hopefully, they will want to read them someday. I can’t vouch for the veracity of my memory, since I’ve already discovered major mistakes in my recollection after we found my old writings. So, the life stories are what I remember, not necessarily what really happened.
My plan was to start by posting old writings, but with revisions when I felt something was just too bad to post in its original form. This blog is more of a collection than a linear effort. Posts are categorized but are not in any specific order. Older works are mixed in with newer works. I also often go back and revise or expand older posts as often as I publish new ones. You will notice that I sometimes comment on my own posts, giving the original version or detailing just the changes or giving some background to the post.
There are some good, some bad (okay, maybe more bad), and some immature and embarrassing posts. I don’t promise entertainment. I don’t promise quality. I don’t even promise to keep posting. All I can promise is that these are my words. They are little bits and pieces of me. They mean something to me. They may or may not mean something to you. It’s just words, folks, but they’re my words. So, let the reader beware.

Your words matter.
which makes me wonder if all is well since you have not posted any for sometime.. I miss your poetry.

It’s so wonderful to hear that my words matter. Thank you for saying that. I have posted nearly all of my old poems that I feel are worth typing in, and even a few that I wasn’t so sure about. 🙂
I am surprised that I have written so many new poems, I was primarily hoping to document the old stuff from my youth in this blog. In all the years between college and starting this blog, I think I only wrote a handful of poems. So, it has been surprising that the urge to try to write was still lurking within me.
I’m just an inconsistent blogger, I fear. I’ve been trying to post my old stuff regularly, but I generally don’t devote any time to try to write something new for this blog. When something “inspires” me, I try to get to the computer sometime before I forget it. Sometimes, I make it and sometimes I don’t. I’ve typed a couple into my smartphone, so that I wouldn’t forget them. LOL
So, all is as well as it ever is for me… with one special exception. Many evenings I am blessed to get to feed and rock my three month old granddaughter to sleep. That’s been precious time for me and is likely cutting into my blogging reading and writing time, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Believe me, I only click on like when I like a post. Of course, it is easier to click like than to comment. I admit that I don’t comment very often, since even on-line I’m shy and I kinda feel like I’m intruding into someone else’s beautiful blog space if I comment. Something about your poetry really amazes me. The words appear to come so natural to you and sound so right to me. That doesn’t happen to me every day. I am very impressed and I see that lot’s of others see the talent there, too. Good luck and best wishes to you!
I see lots of talented writers out there blogging. Writing comes hard to me these days. Most of my posts were actually written nearly thirty years ago. It seemed to come easy to me back then. I often try to revise them as I post them, because although I wrote a lot back then, I didn’t spend much time editing myself. A lot of what I wrote seems like rubbish to me now as I search through my notebooks looking for something worthy to post. Very few get posted without a lot of revision by this old self-critic.
Songs have been especially hard for me to post, because the ones that I recorded, I can’t really edit now. I can’t fix the mistakes or revise the words because I don’t even remember how to play them. I cannot re-record them now. So, I’m stuck with what I did all those years ago. Often, I was composing ten or more songs in a single day. I would just keep going until I filled one or both sides of a tape.
But when I look at a blank page today. It is so hard for me to find the inspiration to say anything new. I’m not sure what I will do when I run out of old poems. I fear that I’ll be like an old steam locomotive that has used up all it’s coal and is sitting still on the tracks just huffing and puffing away.

Well i may be young but what I know is there is rhyme everywhere. The magic is hidden in what we see, think or feel. Allow yourself to immerse with the world, taste the air, hear the silence, and let the words come to you. In my case, I cannot let a day go by without writing a poem. It’s like breathing to me. I would love to give them a melody someday but I just don’t have a talent…:) Though most of my poems has a tone in my head…:)

Hello, sir! Thanks for dropping by my page. I followed you in the instant I saw your works. I haven’t read them yet one by one and I’m not making a promise to. But I gotta go right now and I would just like you to know, from the very first impression, that your works have depth in them. 🙂

Thank you. I like to find other good blogs to enjoy, especially those with poetry. Sometimes, I browse the tag poetry. Sometimes, I click on gravatars of readers that like poems that I also like. I think that’s how I found your blog. Lot’s of interesting blogs out there to explore and enjoy.

Thank you for visiting my blog and following. I’m following you back and looking forward to reading more of your poetry. (Am usually behind on reading, but will be back when possible. There are many great poets here on WP and you appear to be one of them! 🙂 )

Thank you. I haven’t been able to spend as much time as I used to at reading blogs or writing poems, since my first granddaughter arrived two months ago. Like you, I also enjoy reading many of the poets I’ve found on WP, but of course my granddaughter now gets priority! 🙂

What a fantastic thing to do for your kids and grandkids! And thanks for also sharing your words with the interwebs, for I have enjoyed what I’ve seen and am excited to read more. I’m a terrible poet, but thanks for liking a few of my posts. 🙂 You have quite a talent, keep writing!

Glad all is well. Having two granddaughters myself, I know how wonderful it is to hold them and love them. Soon you will be writing about her loveliness. I look forward to that. 🙂

Well, my kids and grandchild moved out last week into their own apartment. They are now about 20 minute drive away. I’m trying to adapt to not being able to see my grandaughter every evening and rocking her to sleep every night. Trying to put my focus on work and other things so that I don’t get depressed. And trying to say to myself how lucky I was to have them live with us for so long.

20 minutes is not so far away Ron, but yes, I can imagine that the daily connection is something you miss terribly.

AnElephantCant help thinking
This is some crazy stuff you have created
You may be slightly mad
But please don’t be sad
AnElephant thinks sanity is vastly overrated
#24 by Ronald Kirk House on July 24, 2013 - 6:40 am
thank you for your comment
I am told that “slightly mad” runs in my family
but I’m not one to run
since I don’t find that to be fun
and so I don’t let what is said ever bother me
