Today I bring you Dan Black (yes, for the second week in a row).
After last week’s discovery of his band The Servant, I found myself tirelessly linking from video to video. That’s when I found this.
“Symphonies” is a song I’ve been listening to for over a year. On the train. On a bike ride. On a morning run. My creative psyche has soundtracked many a scenario where this song tells the story. But never in a million years would I have envisioned this.

It has finally happened.
A two year search has come to an end.
My caffeine dependent life is complete.
I have found… the perfect espresso cup.
Happy Sunday morning to you, my friends. You know where to find me… on the couch, listening to music, sipping the rich, bitter nectar of the Latin American Coffee Farming Gods. Oh but the best part, I bought a set of eight. So you know, COME ON OVER!

So it’s finally been revealed that two very important people in my life… well make that four people… okay five. Well, now I’m just giving it away. CONGRATULATIONS to Brandon, Sara, Sydney, Brady and baby girl/boy SKAGGS!
If it’s a girl, Brandon and Sara already have a name picked out. So if it’s a boy, I officially call dibs on picking the name. Possibly Guillermo, but we’ll see.

Just made some spontaneous plans to hit up, you guessed it, New York in a couple weeks with this guy:
I love friends, I love travel, I love New York, and I (whole-heartedly) love spontaneity. Crazy how things work out. Three hours ago I didn’t even know I’d see this guy today (his name is Stephen by the way) and by mid-afternoon we were hammering out the deets of getting to and living large in ManHAAAAAATtan.
twenty—-seven bucks on Amtrak from Connecticut to New York thank you very much.
Beer and free pizza at Crocodile Lounge. Wacky Tacky pictures all over the city with his new lens. And, well hello, H&M no doubt. I like having urban metro-male pals to get in trouble with. Expect a report.
Cheers and Spirits, Richard.

Today I bring you Dan Black of The Servant
Okay so I’m a day late. But I heard this song in a friend’s car today and simply couldn’t wait until next week to share. When the track came on, I couldn’t help but recognize the unquestionable vocals of Dan Black. What I didn’t realize was that he fronted a band called The Servant which produced sweet beaty dancy chilaxy tunes like this:

Hey folks. Let me start by saying this: When a limo full of girls drives by screaming “What’s up New York?!” we will be what is up New York.
Barney Stinson. Probably my favorite quote to ever come out of his mouth. Good Guy.
So New York. What an awesome way start this blog about the fantastic-ness that was my September. I did the whole Philly/NYC thang at the beginning of the month with my buddy Brad. We were boys on a budget, so we ghetto-fabbed our way across the Northeast via bus. Because let’s face it, a ten dollar bus fare is significantly better than a 22 dollar ticket on the SEPTA/NJT. Plus it picks you up in Chinatown Philadelphia and drops you off at a very questionable part of Chinatown Manhattan. So it was also a multicultural experience.
But what happened next was anything but cultural. We scurried down the subway steps to buy our day pass and stepped into a somewhat long line at the ticket machine. A line that was not moving. It seems that the machines were only accepting credit cards that day (we know this because it was clearly stated on each machine), but for some reason it wasn’t making sense to the locals as they tried to force their cash in the slot. This is when all hell broke out. While one man violently shook the kiosk another woman started screaming “Somebody call the POH-lice! These machines ain’t takin’ no money. That ain’t right!” So while we waited for the poh-lice to come, we made our way to the front of the line, dipped our CC’s and went about our merry way. Gosh, I sure hope the poh-lice made it in time.
It was a Rainy Night in Soho. Okay, it was a rainy day all over Manhattan, but that’s a pretty rad song
by Matthew Ryan so I had to give it a shout out. But this weather actually made for a perfect afternoon for two vagabonds with no real plans in the city other than to chill out. So we hopped from cafe to cafe, sipping capps and lattes in the rain under covered patios and IT.WAS.PERFECT. Oh and we went to the Apple Store on Fifth because when you’re in The Big Apple, it helps if you actually see a Big Apple.
Brad is a great friend and great travel companion He thirsts for adventure, culture, people, and experiences much like I do. And we both upgrade on flights for the same reason: wine.

Today I bring you Scotch & Sofa
On a lazy Labor Day such as this, who doesn’t want to chill out to a little jazz? And with a name like Scotch & Sofa, the relaxation is pretty much inherent.

My fingers took a month off clicking away at computer keys, documenting the details of my life. No regrets. August was a month spent living life, leaving very little time for much else.
After a long, slow summer of grasping at things I’ve missed (i.e. friendships and relaxation) my life finally catapulted back into the craziness that I truly love.
Namely, travel.
The past three weeks took me to places I love (and some that I don’t :)) and gave me time with people I adore. My first stop was Indianapolis. Indianapolis is a hidden treasure in the heart of the midwest. If you think Indiana is all farmland and corn, you must check out this culturally metropolitan city. My favorite part of this trip was re-uniting with my Ohio buddy Brad. Brad and I share so much in common: coffee, wine, taste in movies, Dostoyevsky and similar views on Christianity and spirituality. I love to just talk with him. He makes me laugh and he makes me think.
Then I went to Tulsa. Dislike.
It cracks me up every time we fly from Dallas to Oklahoma. The 20 minute flight seems silly, but I’ll take all the air miles I can get. Next time, though, I won’t order inflight coffee. I burned my tongue pretty badly in the 45 seconds they give you to drink your beverage.
So Tulsa. Not so great. Remember when Chandler Bing had to move to Tulsa and made fun of the honky-tonk culture? He wasn’t far off. But what did make this trip so great was, once again, all the friends I got to see after months of separation. And it’s amazing how much fun you can have at a redneck dive bar when you are with good people. Oh and the $1.50 Killians helped too. Cheers to Preston, Zach, Parker, Beets, and Josh. I miss you guys more than you know.
The best part of Tulsa? Leaving. Not because I was literally getting the hell out of dodge, but because of where “leaving” was taking me.
Chicago.
This was my second visit to Chicago. My 12 hour layover in the city last year left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. But when Brandon said, “Hey, I gotta go to Chicago for a conference. The hotel is paid for, you should come” I didn’t blink an eye. And it worked out perfectly that he was arriving in Chicago the same day I was flying out of Tulsa. A quick phone call and my flight was re-routed.
Until this year, Brandon and I had a pretty terrible track record of following through with all the wild trips we talked about taking. But 2010 has seen us more than make up for all the vagabond dreaming suppressed in our imagination. 2 continents, 3 countries, and 4 Alpha World Cities later, we’ve been on a pretty good roll.
Brandon is my definition of a “best friend.” Simply put, he is my favorite person in the world to be around. He’s a rock and he’s a brother. There are no pretenses. I can be obnoxious, quirky, and stupid and never have to fear that he will turn his back on me. Even when tested, he will prove that he is always there for his friends. To know him is to understand this. He puts God and family first, and those of us lucky to come in third place know that it is a solid place to be in the life of Brandon Skaggs.
So I still haven’t made up my mind about Chicago. But even if it was just a temporary spot on this earth for us to hang out, it’s already won bonus points in my book. Thanks Chicago, for big beans, baseball, and brief bouts of bro-time with my buddy Brandon.
