Patient Hope

But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. – (Romans 8:25, NIV) 

But we are hoping for something we don’t have yet, and we are waiting for it patiently. – (Romans 8:25, ERV) 

So because our hope is set on what is yet to be seen, we patiently keep on waiting for its fulfillment. – (Romans 8:25, TPT) 

Hope is that beautiful space within us that believes and trusts that what is promised, the things that are longed for, will one day be fulfilled or come to pass. Our ultimate hope, the very thing we long for and have been promised, is an eternity in heaven if we choose believe and receive all that the Lord is offering. We have a lifetime to wait for it, yet it is hope worth holding. Hope is housed in that which is yet to be seen. In pregnancy, though the season of waiting feels long, especially near the end, the patient waiting is well worth the hope that has been held, when at last the newborn child is placed in one’s arms. Currently, one of my hopes that I am waiting for is to have a puppy that will listen and not be bitey. Though I don’t always see the well-mannered, obedient puppy yet, I have hope that with training and patience, what I desire most for our sweet Thor, will be realized. Incredibly, in the same way that I see glimpses of good behavior and obedience in our puppy, God grants us glimpses of His glory. All of creation reflects His beauty and majesty, reminding us of all that is yet to come. May we hold fast to the hope we have in Jesus, as He is faithful to all His promises. 

Anticipation,

God brings us beauty,

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that we can hold fast to the hope we have in You, for Your promises are true and You are faithful to fulfill as that You say You will do. Forgive us for our lack of patience when the fulfillment is a longer wait than we think it should be. Teach us to trust You more, so that we would patiently wait for all of the good that is yet to come. Show us how to love those around us well, so that they may recognize Your goodness and grace through how we love like You. May many come into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we hold onto hope, and patiently wait for all that is yet to come. Amen.

Trust in His Present Help

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. – (Isaiah 41:10, NIV) 

Don’t worry – I am with you. Don’t be afraid – I am your God. I will make you strong and help you. I will support you with my right hand that brings victory. – (Isaiah 41:10, ERV) 

Do not yield to fear, for I am always near. Never turn your gaze from me, for I am your faithful God. I will infuse you with My strength and help you in every situation. I will hold you firmly with my victorious right hand. – (Isaiah 41:10, TPT) 

God is faithful to His promise to be present to help, in both small and great things. Yesterday, we took our Lab puppy, Thor, on a couple of hikes. The first took us along Lake Easton, down to the state park campgrounds, and then on a bit further to the river below the dam. Thor loved the water, and happily waded and drank his fill of the fresh, cool water. Later in the afternoon, after witnessing his love and seeming fearlessness, we took him on a hike around the lake, and first found a small cove with a few feet of beach-like terrain. Each step he became a bit more daring about going further out. At last, we decided to see if he would swim. Though there was a bit of fear in each of us, for it was a first and required trust, Thor galloped out past where he could touch to retrieve a stick, and swam as he was born to do. Our hearts were strengthened as we watched the faithfulness of God in how He created our sweet pup, and we then took him further on the trail to the boat launch area. Once there, we began to throw the same stick out a bit further each time he retrieved it, our hearts growing in trust a bit more each time. When we determined Thor had done enough, we began our trek back to our campground. Thor was emboldened, and was actually protesting as we were leaving; jumping and attempting to nip at us to encourage us to turn back around. He settled back down when he was able to take part of the leash in his mouth, allowing him to think he was leading us back. Though I know this is a small thing, it is still an example of having to trust. The more we trust in the small things, the more we are prepared to trust when trials and difficulties come our way. May we ever look to the Lord and trust in Him, for He is faithful to strengthen us and hold us up with His mighty hands. 

Do not be afraid,

Protect, empower, 

He fills empty cups. 

In spaces of fear,

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You are faithful to meet us wherever we are; be it in small things or tremendous trials. Thank You that You strengthen us and uphold us with Your mighty, loving hands. Forgive us for the spaces where fear overwhelms us. Teach us to trust You more, as You are ever present to help, and faithful to love us through all things. Show us how to love, encourage and strengthen those around us in the same way that You do as You lovingly walk alongside us. May many come into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we trust You to be present to help and strengthen us in all things as You uphold us with Your loving hands. Amen.

Assurance Beyond What is Seen

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. – (Hebrews 11:1, NIV)

Faith is what makes real the things we hope for. It is proof of what we cannot see. – (Hebrews 11:1, ERV)

Faith is the assurance of things you have hoped for, the absolute conviction that there are realities you’ve never seen. – (Hebrews 11:1, VOICE)

Faith is a deep-rooted, unwavering trust in what we cannot see, and a confident hope in what we know is true. Trusting God in all things requires us to believe beyond what we can see. The longer I know God, the easier it is to trust Him, as I have seen and experienced His goodness and faithfulness over and over again. So often, when it seems there is no way that our situation or circumstances will change or improve, God has a plan and brings it to fruition in a way that is far better than we could have hoped or imagined. Trusting God is hoping in He who hung the stars in the sky and created all the beauty that our eyes can behold. He is good and His unfailing love endures forever. May we ever place of hope and trust in Him, even when we cannot see how He is working, for He is faithful and true and His plans for us are good.

Faith is the trusting,

beyond what is seen;

knowing God is good,

though He is unseen.

The works of His hands,

Trust and Be Still

The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. – (Exodus 14:14, NIV)

You will not have to do anything but stay calm. The Lord will do the fighting for you. – (Exodus 14:14, ERV)

God will fight the battle for you. And you? You keep your mouths shut! – (Exodus 14:14, MSG)

This is the message that God gave to the Israelites when they had fled from Egypt and Pharaoh and his army began to follow them. Though they were terrified, God let them know that the battle was not theirs to fight; they only had to quietly watch and wait, for He had a plan that was far greater than they could have hoped or imagined. The same God who rescued the Israelites is alive and active and able to help us today. There are times that He calls us to rise up and do certain things to better our situations or circumstances, yet there are other times that He simply calls us to seek and trust Him, waiting and watching for what He will do. Right now, I am in the midst of a seemingly impossible situation, in which I do not know what to do. My heart knows to pray and trust in God, for He is faithful and greater than all that we face. Until I have clear direction, I will wait and watch and trust. He is good, and His love endures forever. May we ever seek the Lord and trust Him to fight for us when we know not what else to do, for God is faithful forever and moves mightily on our behalf.

The battles we face,

are not always ours;

at times we are called,

to trust God’s power.

For God is greater,

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that in all things, we can come to You and ask for Your help and guidance. Thank You that sometimes we have specific things that we must do, yet other times, You remind us to be still and trust You to move in ways we could not even begin to imagine. Forgive us for our fears and frustrations in the seemingly impossible spaces; You are more than able to bring resolution to things that seem impossible. Lead us in Your everlasting and overwhelming love, and bring many into a lasting relationship with You as they experience Your goodness and grace. Be glorified O God, as we seek and trust You in all things and praise You for who You are and how You love us forever; Amen.

Setting Our Sights On The Good

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. – (Philippians 4:8, NIV)

Brothers and sisters, continue to think about what is good and worthy of praise. Think about what is true and honorable and right and pure and respected. – (Philippians 4:8, ERV)

Finally, brothers and sisters, fill your minds with beauty and truth. Meditate on whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good, whatever is virtuous and praiseworthy. – (Philippians 4:8, VOICE)

As I sit on the couch, with both dogs sprawled across my lap, I am reminded of God’s goodness through the sweet, warm cuddle puddle that loves to be beside me. The things that are good, and true, honorable and right, pure and praiseworthy, provide a similar sort of warmth of heart. When we fix our eyes on Jesus, we long to linger in His presence and focus on His goodness and grace that is tangible as we seek Him. Here, in the Pacific Northwest, there is nothing quite as beautiful as a clear winter’s day. Blue skies and sunshine, with glorious snow-capped peaks rising behind the waters of the Puget Sound, provide endless evidence of the beauty of the work of God’s hands. The beauty is all around us, and the truth is found in His word; ready to be read anew every morning. As we invest time with Him and in His word, He grants us new insight and understanding of how He loves us and longs for us to love one another. May we ever seek the Lord and listen to His leading, for He is the Source of all that is pure and lovely, noble and true, right and admirable, and worthy of all of our praise.

Whatever is good,

lovely, and the truth;

attention worthy,

for He makes all new.

Persist in Doing Good

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. – (Galatians 6:9, NIV)

We must not get tired of doing good. We will receive our harvest of eternal life at the right time. We must not give up. – (Galatians 6:9, ERV)

May we never tire of doing what is good and right before our Lord because in His season we shall bring in a great harvest if we can just persist. – (Galatians 6:9, VOICE)

We are called to do what is good and right before God, and we know that good is that which is fueled by love. Jesus summed up all of the laws by instructing us to love God and love one another. If all that we say and do is fueled by love, then we are doing the very things that God asks of us; for love is that which draws others unto Himself. The Lord knew we would face challenges and adversity, which is why we are reminded to persist and not give up. Even the hardest of hearts begin to soften when they are met over and over again with kindness. In the classroom, I see this in action every day. There are students who come from difficult circumstances or with a history of adversity in the classroom that think that they cannot do math. Their belief fuels them to either avoid the work or to act out as a distraction that keeps their struggle from being seen. Slowly, over time, when I meet these students with kindness over and over again, I often begin to see a change in their approach. Though it has not yet worked with every struggling student, there are several who are in a better space now than when the school year began. This has nothing to do with me, and everything to do with the faithfulness of God that fuels me to persist. His kindness to me is what inspires me to extend the same to those around me. May we ever seek the Lord to lead us in what is good and right before Him, and choose to persevere, even when we cannot see the fruit of our obedience to Him.

Do not grow weary,

in choosing do good;

for as we persist,

Forgive us for our frustration when we cannot see how You are moving in our circumstances, or when we fail to persist in loving as You love us all. Show us how to press on in Your goodness and grace, so that love is made known to all with whom we share space. Bring many into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we seek You and rely on You to lead us to do the good that You call us into, and grant us the strength to persist, for You are faithful to fulfill all that You have promised in due time; Amen.

The Source of Wisdom

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. – (James 1:5, NIV)

Do any of you need wisdom? Ask God for it. He is generous and enjoys giving to everyone. So He will give you wisdom. – (James 1:5, ERV)

If you don’t have all the wisdom needed for this journey, then all you have to do is ask God for it; and God will grant all that you need. He gives lavishly and never scolds you for asking. – (James 1:5, VOICE)

I am so thankful that God hears our requests and grants the wisdom that we need to navigate well. As a parent, teacher, coach, spouse, sister and daughter (to name a few), I often find myself in uncharted territory and in a space of uncertainty as to how to best move forward in a manner that honors God. I know that love must be the motivation, yet there are situations and circumstances that are far beyond my experience or skill set that continue to keep me in a place of seeking the Lord to lead. Though there are things going on right now that I cannot even begin to fathom how to navigate, yet I know that I can trust the Lord to answer as I ask, for He has been faithful throughout my whole life. In hindsight, I can look back and see how He led and guided me through some of my most difficult seasons, and brought me to a new season and space that was far better than before. He is good, and God is faithful as we seek Him. May we ever look to the Lord and ask for wisdom, for He is loving and kind and lavishly supplies what we need.

The Lord is faithful,

each time that we seek;

our wisdom and strength,

Found By The Seeking

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” – (Matthew 7:7-8, NIV)

“Continue to ask, and God will give to you. Continue to search, and you will find. Continue to knock, and the door will open for you. Yes, whoever continues to ask will receive. Whoever continues to knock will have the door opened for them.” – (Matthew 7:7-8, ERV)

Just ask and it will be given to you; seek after it and you will find. Continue to knock and the door will be opened for you. All who ask receive. Those who seek, find what they seek. And he who knocks, will have the door opened. – (Matthew 7:7-8, VOICE)

God is always faithful to meet us as we seek Him. We are called to pursue the Lord and ask of Him that which leads us in the direction to which we have been called. Seeking, asking, and knocking look different in every season and circumstance, yet the faithfulness of God to hear, answer, and open the door to us remains the same. As I teach, I ask for wisdom and grace so that I instruct well and know how to respond in all things. As a coach, I find myself praying for protection over my gymnasts as they compete, and for the right encouragement to meet the girls where they are build them up to be their best selves. Every single day, there are multiple opportunities to seek the Lord to meet us and lead us so that we love as He loves, and to know what we are meant to say and do in all things and at all times. May we ever ask of the Lord and seek Him, for as we ask and seek and knock, He answers and shows us the ways that are best.

The Lord is faithful,

in all of His ways;

He hears as we call,

throughout each new day.

As we choose seek Him,

Thank You that You open the doors that are meant for us, and keep those closed that are not. Forgive us for the times that we doubt what You are doing because we cannot see behind the scenes. Teach us to trust You in all things and at all times, and to earnestly seek and pray and knock. Lead us to love those around us like You, and bring many into a lasting relationship with You as they recognize You answer our prayers and are found by the seeking. Be glorified O God, as we praise You for Your never-ending faithfulness and grace for us, and for the mighty ways You move as we turn to You in trust; Amen.

Keep Doing Good

We are called to do what is good and right before the Lord without ceasing. When we let love lead in all that we say and do, we are living according to what God asks of us. As we do, people notice the difference in us as the Lord draws them unto Himself. May we ever seek the Lord to lead us in His love and to show us what is good and right in His sight; and may the Lord draw many unto Himself as we follow after Him in all that we say and do.

Let’s grow not weary,

in choosing do good;

Give us Your heart for others and bring many into a lasting relationship with You as they recognize the goodness and faithfulness of Your overwhelming love. Listen in Love

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. – (James 1:19, NIV)

My dear brothers and sisters, always be more willing to listen than to speak. Keep control of your anger. – (James 1:19, ERV)

Listen, open your ears, harness your desire to speak, and don’t get worked up into a rage so easily, my brothers and sisters. – (James 1:19, VOICE)

We are called to be quick to listen and slow to speak; I imagine that is why we were created with two ears and only one mouth. As we choose to listen to understand, we are given words to speak and patience that fends of anger that is not necessary. Yes, there are times that righteous anger is justified, yet often, it is through listening that we gain insight that we would not have previously had if we only spoke in reaction to what we observed. There is always more to the story than what we can observe at a glance. May we ever seek the Lord to lead us to listen well and be slow to speak and slow to anger, for He works in amazing ways when we are willing to do things according to His good and perfect will.

Be quick to listen,

and be slow to speak;

as we choose to hear,

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You call us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Thank You that You sent Your Son to show us what this looks like, practically. Each time people would come to Him, He would ask them what they wanted and they listen before speaking in love. Forgive us for the times that we have reacted immediately without listening and seeking You to show us how to respond. Lead us in Your love so that we truly listen to those around us, and pause to ponder what You would have us say. Bring many into a lasting relationship with You as they come to understand the patience and depth of Your love given to all who seek You. Be glorified O God, as we seek You to lead us to listen in love and then only speak that which glorifies You; Amen.

Let Love Lead

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. – (Matthew 7:12, NIV)

Do for others what you would want them to do for you. This is the meaning of the Law off Moses and the teaching of the prophets. – (Matthew 7:12, ERV)

This is what our Scriptures come to teach: in everything, in every circumstance, do to others as you would have them do to you. – (Matthew 7:12, VOICE)

The word of God is alive and active, ever teaching, guiding and directing us to do what is right. This passage in Matthew reminds us to do unto others as we would want done unto us; for as we abide in Him we discover more and more how we are called to love in every situation and circumstance, and as for me, I know the way that I want to be treated by others is with kindness that is fueled by love. When I make a mistake, I want to be given grace, even when correction is needed. Knowing my own desire helps me to seek the Lord to lead me to do the same with those around me. As a teacher, I have many opportunities to put this into practice every single day. Middle schoolers are impulsive and figuring out who they want to be. When I remain calm and gently correct or redirect behaviors and actions that are unsafe or unkind, kids are quicker to respond and do what is right. In traffic, I try to remind myself that when drivers are careless or distracted as they drive, they could be preoccupied with things that are going on in their lives and are simply trying to get where they need to go so that they will not be late to something important. In all things, allowing the Lord’s love to flow through us with kindness and grace is always a better way to interact with others, for His heart for the world is made known through the little things we say and do that are different than expected. May we ever seek the Lord to lead us in His love, and to show us how to give kindness and grace, even when we think something else is deserved.

When the world’s cruel,

and all seems unkind;

For love’s the answer,

to all that is wrong;

to give like the Lord,

our heart and our song.

To choose extend grace,

in goodness and love;

let gentleness lead,

like the Lord above.

For as we are met,

with what’s undeserved;

we pursue the same,

in actions and words.

Lead us, Lord Jesus,

in all that we do;

so Your love’s made known,

as Your light shines through.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that above all, You call us to love. Thank You that choosing to love is fulfilling the law, for there is no law against loving kindness and grace. Forgive us for the times that we have not shown love and have reacted rather than responded. Teach us to turn to You to lead us in Your love in every situation and circumstance, for Your love brings peace and patience, kindness and goodness, even when it is seemingly undeserved. Show us how to love like You, even when we want to react. Bring many into a lasting relationship with You as they recognize Your goodness and grace that gives life everlasting. Be glorified O God, as we seek You to lead us to love and treat others as we would want to be treated in every situation and circumstance, for Your love lights up the darkest of hearts and brings peace where chaos once reigned; Amen.

No Temptation

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. – (1 Corinthians 10:13, NIV)

The only temptations that you have are the same temptations that all people have. But you can trust God. He will not let you be tempted more than you can bear. But when you are tempted, God will also give you a way to escape that temptation. Then you will be able to endure it. – (1 Corinthians 10:13, ERV)

Any temptation you face will be nothing new. But God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can handle. But He always provides a way of escape so that you will be able to endure and keep moving forward. – (1 Corinthians 10:13, VOICE)

Because Jesus came near and lived among us, He knows and understands every temptation that comes our way. As we rely on Him, He can help us stand firm and not be swayed by that which seeks to entangle us. The Lord supplies the strength we need to turn and walk away from that which does not give Him glory, for He knows what we need to stand firm and to escape that which seeks to destroy our resolve to follow after Him. May we ever seek the Lord and rely on Him, for He is faithful to meet us in every moment, and will supply the strength we need to turn away from temptations and stay true to the path to which we have been called.

There’s no temptation,

that we can’t withstand;

not in our own strength,

but with Christ, we can.

God grants us the strength,

and makes a way out;

so we can stand firm,

choose trust and not doubt.

For Jesus, He knows,

all that comes our way;

He lived without sin,

and hears as we pray.

Faithful to meet us,

with all that we need;

help to uphold us,

look to Him to lead.

Ever He’s faithful,

always in all things;

all help, love and hope,

and goodness He brings.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that there is no temptation that You do not know or understand, and thank You Jesus, that You experienced all, yet were without sin. Thank You that You know how to strengthen us and make a way out so that we do not have to succumb to the sins that seek to entangle us. Forgive us for the times that we have fallen short and done the things that we should not have done. Teach us to seek You first in all things, and listen to Your leading as we rely on You for strength and guidance throughout each new day. Show us how to love those around us as You do, and help us to walk in Your way and do Your will in ways that honor You and bless those around us. Bring many into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we look to You to lead us, and praise You for Your ongoing faithfulness and nearness; Amen.
