Awww Sean, I think you got me wrong,…. just maybe. I dont deny that by today’s standards, what happened on Rekohu back in 1835 was despicable. Made worse by the inexcusable inaction of the Crown. BUT, in 1835 Maori were also doing the same thing to each other, and had been since time began. So get off your high horse and take a walk in history for a while. I am not depicting either Moriori, Maori or pakeha to be anything other than what they were at the time. You ‘feel’ I depict Maori to be no higher than animals, etc etc………. Uhhhh,… wrong! You’re reading too much into it ehoa,… I’m just not that clever with words to be able to do that. If I think someone is an animal, I’d just say it.

I never had an interest in the Chatham Islands until I went to New Plymouth and saw a painting of Te Whiti in the Govatt/Brewster gallery. Tears streamed down my cheeks. I did not know much about Te Whiti other than pacifism. I just bawled. A year later I kept getting Chatham Islanders in my mind’s eye…and Rakiura. I can’t find anything much about any connection though I was amazed to read about the Auckand Is story. So now I really want to go to the Chathams…am called to this place.

Your denial of wrongdoing by the Maori’s really discredits your intellect. Excusing it with “it’s what they did back then” smacks of ‘reality is what I choose it to be’. I feel you are depicting the Maori to be no higher than animals, as if ‘a tiger can’t be blamed for killing and eating villagers, because it’s what tigers do!’
I can only respond to that by saying good luck with that perspective.
And please don’t come back with ‘well, that was back then and things are different now’. You don’t appear to be affording the pakeha the same convenience.
