Don’t Pet the Peeve

Having learned the hard way

I dare not often pet the Peeves…

needy, high-maintenance

creatures, always wanting more

attention, hanging round my feet

jerking at sleeve, whining about

their unresolved disappointments

unsatisfied expectations…

as though I have super power

within weak frame to control

the World, every aspect

of multitudinous systems—

I’ve listened to each Peeve

(sympathized, once a Peeve myself)

and spoken harsh truth

I received long ago:

“Life is Not Fair, deal with it!”

but they’re loathe to surrender

relentless grumbling…

(I understand)

but that’s it, I’m done, I refuse

to soothe them with endless

petting… I have full life

gratitude for myriad blessings—

Perhaps they’ll wander off, find

lonely miserable soul to pester…

we all have the same choice:

start day with complaints

or sing praise to God Who

gives Himself faithfully

from Heart’s magnificent love

(His goodness outweighs resentments

which morph into monstrous

Peeves that gouge, rob, disable)—

Don’t feed or pet them

they’re not cute and fuzzy

nor loyal…they are leeches ~

“With your own eyes you will see the glorious King; you will see his kingdom reaching far and wide.”

Isa 33:17  Contemporary English Version

21 “But this I call to mind,

Therefore I have hope.

22 It is because of the LORD’S lovingkindnesses that we are not consumed,

Because His [tender] compassions never fail.

23 They are new every morning;

Great and beyond measure is Your faithfulness.

24 “The LORD is my portion and my inheritance,” says my soul;

“Therefore I have hope in Him and wait expectantly for Him.”

25 The LORD is good to those who wait [confidently] for Him,

To those who seek Him [on the authority of God’s word].

26 It is good that one waits quietly

For the salvation of the LORD.”

Lamentations 3:21-26 Amplified Bible

Songs for Sunday!

Blessings to all who wander here💖

Whatever’s going on in your life, the desperate needs you have…there is ONE GOD Who Sees You, Knows You, and will meet you wherever you are.

So take a deep breath and call on JESUS…then make the choice to Trust and Believe HIM…and watch for the Miracle solutions and provisions.  I promise you (from many years of experience with Him), HE will Not Disappoint.  (In the hardest seasons are seeds of Victory.)

Now, if you’re ready, how ’bout getting on your feet to sing/dance and praise Him—and thank Him in advance as a show of faith (remember: ‘faith’ is a muscle, it gets stronger with use!)

I will be praying for you all this week! Rene💖

(Please forgive the wonky formatting in the scripture verses below…I copy/paste from https://biblehub.com)😊

Isaiah 65:24  Even before they call, I will answer, and while they are still speaking, I will hear.

Jeremiah 33:3  Call to Me, and I will answer and show you great and unsearchable things you do not know.

Isaiah 41:10  Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

Romans 10:13   For “WHOEVER CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD [in prayer] WILL BE SAVED.”
1 John 5:14-15  And this is the confidence that we have before Him: If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. / And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we already possess what we have asked of Him.
Hebrews 4:16  Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Psalm 50:15  Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor Me.”

Bedelia, 2020 (The Meet ‘n Greet Invitation) 6SS

Here’s my 2nd 6SS offering this week for the prompt word, “Need”.

But first, I extend a heartfelt Thank You to readers who have remained interested in Bedelia & Finn’s story–and have encouraged me to post 6SS episodes from 2020, where it began.  I never imagined that after a 5-year break, this couple still breathed.  (Nor did I realize I would need to keep writing about them.)

So I bring you another chapter from a file which miraculously survived many purgings.   For this previous story, Denise’s word prompt was “Passion”.

Bedelia surfed the cable TV guide for a Friday night movie, settled on the classic romance, “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing”, starring William Holden, Jennifer Jones.

She wasn’t crazy for Holden but liked love stories with tragic endings; she’d wished her ex-husband had been hit by a bus and died…widows received sympathy—divorcees, suspicion.

On reflection, having been alone 40 years, she would have traded flash-fire of romantic passion for real love’s lantern, long-burning—if she’d had good sense and opportunity to choose differently, wisely, while still youthful.

Time trudged on, the shame of having been a ‘dolt deceived’ clung like a sopping raincoat—and, convinced she was as desirable as a boot-squashed mushroom, the notion of daring another chance at love nauseated her; neither lonely nor bored, she’d redirected her passions to God, and writing.

As ending credits rolled, Bedelia picked up the mail she’d forgotten to open; ads, charities requesting donations, a small pale gray envelope–no return address, but a local postmark.

Instinctively wary, a frown cut into her forehead and jerked her lips tight as she pulled forth the note card with neatly penned message:  “Dear Miss Cornell—I know you declined my initial invitation to the Meet & Greet, but someone you might enjoy getting acquainted with will be there; I could fetch you at 4 pm, Saturday, and easily return you home afterward…please reconsider and call me at the parish office ~ Rev. Timothy Canter”.

Bedelia and Finn, needing a break from unpacking boxes, decided to get out and do errands: Finn wanted to stop by his law office where he still practiced part-time–doing Wills mostly–he’d catch up over coffee with his partner, Jack Clay (recently his best-man), who was determined to keep the office running till his dying day; and Bedelia was going to the library nearby.

Finn asked how much time she wanted to spend there—he would meet her, and they’d complete their outing at the grocery store— “Well, I need the latest Stephen King novel…and I need to look for any recent true crime books I’ve missed,” she replied sweetly.

Her new husband shook his head–“Beedee, I don’t know why you read either genre–you don’t need to invite nightmares…most women read romances”; she patted his arm, said, “I have romance, and I like it when you snuggle me out of a nightmare; it’s harmless diversion—like your live-streaming football, hockey, basketball, bowling; are you worried I’m collecting tips on how to get away with dispatching you to your eternal reward so I can run off with Matt Dillon…he may be interested, I read he’s between girlfriends currently.”

Pulling on a lightweight jacket, Finn laughed, “I don’t think he could handle you, even with the age difference…anyway, he’d better not try–now let’s go before somebody gets your books first.”

Bedelia loved the library–years ago she’d worked at a different branch, the only job she’d truly enjoyed; the young gal at the Reference Desk saw her and waved her over.

“I heard you just got married, Bedelia…you snagged that handsome attorney, Finn Canter…oh! what I would have given to catch his eye…(sigh)…I was always attracted to older men…tell me the Reader’s Digest condensed version, did he sweep you off your feet?”—Bedelia giggled, “it was more like he kept dusting for five years until I finally said things looked tidy enough.”

‘Mr Van Gogh’ 2020 (6SS)

https://girlieontheedge1.wordpress.com/2025/10/05/sundays-six-sentence-story-word-prompt-387/

carview.php?tsp=

For anyone interested in more of the backstory to Finn and Bedelia’s saga, I’m sharing an extra “Six”.  (I apologize that it’s wordier than the limit I try to keep to 5 years later—there’s no obligation to read.)

This week’s 6SS prompt is “Fill”.  In an episode pulled from a 2020 file Bedelia and Finn were still getting to know each other, and it features the first budgie, “Mr Van Gogh”.  The prompt word was “Horizon”.

🦜🦜🦜

‘Ello, Fenn!” Mr Van Gogh greeted Finn’s arrival, repeating it till Finn deigned to pay him proper obeisance—Bedelia laughed as she filled pans with fragrant batter.

While pumpkin bread baked, Finn offered to wash dishes; adopting a quietly jovial tone, he said, “if we were married we could do dishes together every night, Beedee”—(her response was to mutely wrench the dishtowel round and round the well-dried mixing bowl, like a wind-up doll unstoppable).

He’d brought Chinese take-out, she set the table; as he took his chair he cautiously inquired whether he’d said the absolutely wrong thing; when she murmured a soft “no”, he continued his thought: “I’m just wondering what you see on the horizon”.

After chewing a bite of sesame chicken, she replied: “I hope I’m seeing a long enduring friendship…I like you very much, Finn; I’m enjoying our companionship…it’s tempting, at holidays, to let emotions take control; but marriage requires cool heads willing to allow needed time for detailed discussions; you’d still be married had Elizabeth not passed away—my experience left me favoring a convent…aside from early-rising nuns.”

“Beedee, I wouldn’t be remotely like your ex-husband—I’m from the ‘happy wife, happy life’ school, I’m not the controlling type; I can’t foresee being slightly miffed at you, let alone angry; your self-esteem, confidence were destroyed…but Beedee, you’re everything a man might wish for—don’t give me the, ‘I’m not young and pretty anymore’ look, because on that point your vote doesn’t count”; he basked in her blush, touched the back of her hand, continued: “Beedee, I’ll slow down…but I’m going to say it, I’m in love with you, I believe we’d be happy together the rest of our lives; I’ll do anything to prove I’m God’s answer to your ‘too-afraid-to-pray this’ prayer; now…read your fortune.”

She opened the cookie: “Your world has enlarged…take the key to your new door’—what does yours say?”—“‘You’re on the right road, don’t deviate, proceed forward 20 miles’…ya think the Chinese guy accidentally put his GPS directions in here?”—they laughed so heartily that Mr Van Gogh chirped a close interpretation of “Ah-men!”
