Come for Some Soup!!

It’s been simmering all week-I hope you enjoy it!  Let’s get started by reviewing my ingredients.  They were sent to me by my Bead Soup partner Inge Von Roos.  You can take a look at them here.  My job was to come up with a delicious recipe for these soup ingredients, and then bring it to life for you.

Inge’s beads are so beautiful, and because they were all hand made by her, the challenge for me was to come up with designs that would showcase the beads without overpowering them.  Because I hadn’t made anything substantial in quite a while, I decided to start with something basic, and thought that earrings would be the perfect way for me to start.

I chose a pair of the bumpy beads to start with because I loved the bright colors, and the fun texture.  I wanted them to be the shining stars for this basic  recipe, so I chose textured bead caps that would mirror the texture, and displayed them on sterling silver earwires.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I decided to stick with earrings for the next couple of designs.  For this pair, I chose two of the beads with green and blue swirls.  I wanted to add a bit of elegance to them, and draw the viewers eye into the beads.  I paired them with Czech fire polished crystals, Swarovski Rondelles, and 14KGF ear wires.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

For the last pair of earrings, I wanted to use the Fine Silver flowers that Inge had chosen for me.  The centers of the flowers seemed to be calling for “something,” so I set them with a pair of Swarovski stones.  Then I paired them with vintage Czech glass butterflies with a peacock finish, and Sterling Silver Filled earwires.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA    Now that the soup was warming up, and so was I ,   I wanted to make my next recipe a bit more elaborate.  I had said right from the start that the pastel dichroic glass beads were my favorites, so I chose one of them to work with.  Again, I wanted the bead to stand out, but give it just the right amount of highlights.  The pattern in the bead said “shell” to me, and combined with the blue color inspired me to choose an aquatic theme.  I added a silver plated turtle, and a silver plated shell.  One of the Czech dagger beads that Inge had sent was arranged with the shell, and three small Swarovski bicones helped to align the design and add a bit of sparkle.  I hung it from a Sterling silver filled chain.

P3240098 (2).JPG

With two days left to go before the reveal date, I decided to challenge myself by creating a piece with as much “handmade” touches as I could.  I had fallen in love with the tree focal that Inge made, and chose that for the showpiece for this design.   I chose vintage Czech glass beads in cream and green, and used chose brown Artistic Wire to join everything.  I used the wire to create the beaded chain, and I also made all of the jump rings and the clasp.  I chose  a birds nest and a leaf from my inventory and paired it with one of the Czech leaves that Inge had sent to me, and created a decorative dangle accent at the base of the focal.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA                OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA      Thank you for coming by to sample my soup.  Please go and visit my partner Inge Von Roos and our hostess Lori Anderson , and all of the other wonderfully talented people who are a part of this blog hop.  Please also take the time to leave a comment for me in the area at the end of the list….I’d love to know what you think of  my creations !

Bead Soup Blog Party – Hoarders Edition!

Hello!  If you are reading this, you probably have noticed that I have not posted an entry in  a LONG time.  As always, life has taken over my life, and left me with precious little time for niceties like blogging.  I’ve also not been making as much jewelry as I would like to.  And I haven’t participated in a swap event in several years.  So when I saw that Lori Anderson was going to be hosting a bead swap and blog hop, I wanted to  be a part of it. Being a part of something like this always ignites that creative spark again.

Lori paired me up with Inge Von Roos.  Inge is a very talented lampwork artist, and makes the most beautiful beads.  Luckily for me, she sent me several of her gorgeous handmade creations.  I was overwhelmed when I opened the package and started looking at them, and was immediately drawn into the textures and colors.  I hope I can do her creations justice with my creations.

I’ll share my unboxing with you!  Initially, the package inside was nondescript, giving no hint of the goodies inside.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I opened this to reveal a gift box.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I wanted to take my time, but at the same time wanted to see what was inside!  I lifted the lid, and saw several smaller packages inside.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

First, I opened the bubble wrap that you see on the top of the package…..there was a lovely selection of glass beads in various styles and colors.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhen I removed this from the box, a packet with Inge’s dichroic glass beads was revealed.  I have to admit, that these are my favorite of everything she gave me. I LOVE color and I LOVE sparkle, and anything with color and sparkle together is close to my heart.

Next,  I focused my attention on a group of bumpy beads, also made by Inge.  I have always enjoyed this style of bead. I love the bright colors and the bumpy texture.  They remind me of a cartoon image. Just a bunch of fun!!!  And I see Pantone’s color of the year for 2017, Greenery, very predominant in these beads.

Moving on, I spied a little tiny box in the corner of the box.  Knowing that good things come in small packages, I opened the little box with great anticipation, and found an amazing glass tree bead.  What a beauty-the color, the texture, the detail. This bead is fabulous, and will be a beautiful focal.

The next packet that I opened revealed some pretty green swirly beads, with a couple of blue ones added to the mix.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAYou were probably wondering when I was going to get to that little gift bag on the left of the package. Well, it was opened next.  I found the most amazing glass beads that Inge made on a mandrel.  These are incredible- I would love to see the process she uses to make these.  These make me think of Christmas.

I was almost done, but not quite.  Next was a package of Czech beads that Inge had actually purchased on a trip to the Czech Republic. Inge loves to travel, and this provides the opportunity to buy these beautiful beads right from the source.

Last, but not least, there was a pretty organza bag. It also contained beads and a clasp that Inge had bought on a trip to Thailand.  These are gorgeous!

.How fortunate am I to have such a wonderful artist as my partner!

The reveal for this blog party is Saturday, March 25.  Please stop by then to see what I have made with Inge’s generous and lovely gifts.

Welcome Back, Stranger!

Well, hello little blog of mine! I have missed you!

I’m sorry, but life has so gotten in the way of keeping in touch with you regularly, dear blog.  I spent a lot of time in the spring with gardening, planting seeds, and tending to my small plants.

Digital Camera

Digital Camera

Then things started growing like crazy!!!  Soon it was time to harvest!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then it went really nuts, with everything coming in at once.  I furiously canned and froze, almost every evening after work.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Whew,,,,it finally ended in the fall, and once again, I returned to my other love-making jewelry.

1705A5CE-58A0-11E3-A753-ACC6211EDB2B

So now, it’s time to return to you, little blog.  I’m not going to promise that I’ll be here every day, but I will try to make it at least once a week.

And just because I feel like celebrating, I’ll be awarding a pair of Christmas earrings to one lucky person who reads and comments on this blog entry.  I will do a random drawing from all entries for a pair of Swarovski Crystal Christmas Tree earrings in your choice of Sterling Silver Filled, or 14K Gold Filled Earwires.

5EFE6652-58A2-11E3-85B9-C59F349DF3D9

All you have to do is comment below!!!!  Please make sure you stop by again.  I try to make my blog entries succinct, yet entertaining, and sometimes informative.  My usual subjects are gardening, canning, cooking, or jewelry.  This year I’ll be adding a new topic, as my husband and I recently adopted a pair of Bengal cats.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I look forward to seeing you again!

Hungry for Some Soup??

Dig in!!!  This is the weekend of the big reveal , where you can view not only my bead soup creations, but slightly more than 200 of my closest friends.

The Bead Soup Blog Party is hosted by Lori Anderson.  This is a true labor of love for Lori, and I have been fortunate to be a part of this several times.

My partner for this round of Bead Soup is Natalie Moten.  Natalie was primarily a quilter, who recently discovered jewelry making as another creative outlet.

Here is the soup I got from Natalie.

???????????????????????????????

Front and center, you can see the gorgeous focal that Natalie made for me.  I wanted to use this , of course,  but it was a bit tricky to come up  with something that would showcase Natalie’s flower without overpowering it.  I am happy with my design, and I am looking forward to wearing this with my summer clothes.

New Image

I decided to go with an asymmetrical design, and I split the toggle clasp that Natalie sent. I used the ‘dogbone’ portion with one of the “D” shaped turquoise beads, and used a free form wire wrap to attach the “D” bead to the chain.  I knotted teal blue silk cord for the portion behind the neck.  For the matching earrings, I used some malachite chips for the darker stone because the dark blue ones were a bit large for the earring dangles.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

For my second piece, I used another of Natalie’s handmade focals. This time, it was the birds nest.  I paired it with the small crystals that Natalie sent, and used vintage Czech seed beads from my stash, as well as a gunmetal toggle and earwires that I had on hand.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A better view of Natalies bird nest, next to the matching earrings I made.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

For my last piece, I used the pink/fuchsia beads in a stretch bracelet.  I love these bracelets, but I hardly ever make them, and I don’t know why that is….they are easy to make, and they are good sellers.  I should make more of them!!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I wanted to make one other item but unfortunately ran out of time…however, I did get the focal piece made, and I was so excited about it, I wanted to share that, even though the necklace is uncomplete.  I took the round part of the toggle, and paired with one of the crystal beads that seemed to fit perfectly in the hole.  I wired it in with a bit of 28 gauge wire.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I hope you enjoyed looking at my creations, and I hope my partner Natalie is pleased with what I made.  Please be sure to go visit her blog, and take a look with what she made with the beads I sent her.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Please be sure to visit our lovely hostess, Lori’s  blog also, and show her some much deserved love.

My Partner Got Her Soup!

My partner , Natalie Moten, has updated her blog with pictures of the soup she recieved from me.  Here’s a look at what I sent her.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I sent two focals….I wasn’t sure which one I would like better, but then when I got them, I fell in love with both of them, and though it best for Natalie to choose which one she wanted to use.   Both are lampworked glass. The free form one is by Aimee Milan of Polychrome Beads.  The tubular shaped one is by Robyn Kirkman of FireSong Creations. That  one  came all the way from Queensland, Australia!!  I also chose  a lovely handforged copper toggle created by Maria Scott of SunStones of the Southwest.  There are more handmade beads, in the form of colorful spacers, and a pretty swirled lampwork by Jodie Marshall.  Because I am such a lover of vintage pieces,  I wanted to include some vintage components, too.  I found those at Yummy Treasures.  I have included some tan beads with miniature floral prints, and some Czech teardrop glass beads. There are also cream colored faceted Czech beads (with two jade color accent beads) from Five Sisters.  Last but not least , I included some gemstone beads from Fire Mountain gems.  The larger tan/peachy beads are red aventurine, and the smaller red beads are dyed howlite.

Please remember to come back on April 13 to see what we have made!  And take a few minutes to visit the shops of the suppliers of the soup ingredients, too!

And here’s a quick reminder of the soup I got from Natalie. What would YOU make with it?

???????????????????????????????

Soup Has Arrived !!!!!!

Did I mention previously that I had an awesome partner for this year’s Bead Soup Blog Party??  Well, just in case I didn’t, let me now say it.  My partner, Natalie Moten, is awesome!!  Just look at the goodies she sent me, all the way from Anchorage to their new home in upstate NY!!!!!!!

Here is how everything looked as I took it out of the box.

???????????????????????????????

Right away, you probably noticed a bright pink bead on top of the leopard box just like I did….we’ll get to that in a moment.  The top left is a package that was labeled as soap.

And guess what?? It is soap!  From an artisan in Wasilla, Alaska, Swan Mountain Soap.  It is called One Thousand Roses, and those are rose petals embedded into the top of the soap.  It smells great, too! OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA But I digress….back to the beads.  I couldn’t resist opening that leopard box to solve the mystery of the pink bead.  Inside the box was a gorgeous flower handcrafted by Natalie from beads and metal stampings.  The pink bead was at the center of the flower, and to fit in the box, Natalie had put a hole in the top that the pink bead could fit through.  It made for a great mystery! There was also a smaller flower and a birds nest that Natalie had made.

???????????????????????????????

Natalie’s handmade focals. Aren’t these amazing?

Next, I peeked through the top of the little tin, and saw all kinds of sparkling goodness.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I poured out the contents of the tin, and all of these beauties were in there.

???????????????????????????????

Here is a look at the entire soup.

???????????????????????????????

I am absolutely in love with this soup.  I adore bold and bright colors, and being a lover of vintage, the big flower focal just calls to my heart.  I am so touched that Natalie made this for me.  Be sure to come back on April 13 and see what I have made with my soup!!

Traveling Soup

I am currently packaging up my soup ingredients to send to my partner, Natalie Moten.  Natalie started out as  quilter, and was recently introduced to creating jewelry, and has found a new creative outlet.

Natalie and I both love lots of color, and her quilting appeals to me because of all the lovely brights. She has a great eye for pattern and design, and I’m sure she is going to make something beautiful with these pretty beads that I will be putting in the mail first thing Tuesday morning.

They are going to travel a long way!  I am in upstate New York, and Natalie lives in Anchorage, Alaska! How cool is that?

I am looking forward to receiving my beads from Natalie, and I’ll share them with you as soon as I get them!

Natalie and I are in the third reveal on April 13.  Please make sure you come back on that day to see what I have made 🙂

Spring/Summer Forecast 2013 Part 2

So, we’ve already looked at the colors for the upcoming season.  What are some of the styles we’ll be seeing that utilize these colors?  And what other colors will be popular this season?

The Mod or Op art look in black and white is a holdover from the winter.  This is just such a fun style reminiscent of the 60’s.  You’ll find bold , blocky prints , as well as basic stripes. In addition to stripes, you’ll find fun looks with flower prints combined with stripes.  Black and white will also be combined with fuschia or bright red in color blocked looks.  Here’s a great pair of earrings for sale in my Etsy shop that will compliment these looks perfectly!

Red,  white, and blue is coming on strong for the nautical look.  Our most patriotic holidays are coming up in Spring and Summer, too.  Jewelry pieces in red, white and blue are the perfect accompaniments, and anchor themed jewelry (which was popular in Victorian times, and again in the 1940’s) is very popular this season.

???????????????????????????????

This pin will be listed in my Ebay shop this month.

Floral prints, and flower jewelry will be seen all over, too.  Look for pretty brushed pastels fuzedflowerfullsize Oin Pantone’s seasonal colors, as well as oversized dramatic black and white.  Here are examples of floral necklaces that you can find in my Etsy shop.

Ruffles and peplum are popular again, as in this pretty dress by MiuMiu in Pantone’s nectarine.   There are big changes in footwear this season. After a couple of years of big, clunky shoes, kitten heels and flats are returning for the summer. The ballet flat is one of the hottest shoes of the season.  You’ll also see lots of strappy sandals for the summer.

Handbags are also getting smaller this season.  The suitcase  sized tote is being put aside in favor of small structured bags and clutches.   Here’s a pretty one in another of the season’s hot trend, a snakeskin print.

For all accessories (jewelry, handbags, and shoes), tassels are the hot accent this season.  Tassel earrings of miniature pearls and seed beads are a pretty casual accessory in the Pantone color palette, and chain tassels such as these earrings that I will be selling on Ebay.                      O

Here’s another pretty vintage inspired look with tassels that is for sale in my Etsy shop.

And here’s a vintage tassel lariat that will be listed on Ebay this month.

Note that this piece features a lovely cabochon in the color of the year, Emerald.

In addition to the pieces featured here, all throughout the rest of this winter, and into the spring, I’ll be featuring pieces to keep you on trend, at a price you can afford!!
