My work took me around the country to tens of classrooms, usually in deep rural villages. I knew what newspaper stories, usually sexed up for the reading elites, meant when they reported the sorry state of education: ignorant teachers, hungry children who could not even wrote their own names in P7! I was crazy enough to homeschool when my girls started school. I don’t know how long I would have done it, kubanga that sh*t be tight! But I was not going to tolerate having some teacher force my child to say “kaliculeeta”.

I mean, who comes up with that?!

You know, you just knocked some sense into my oblongata with that verse… True, some of the schools I went to made me beef about eduction in general. In fact one day I complained so much about the teachers in Uganda (I was hardly a teen when I did this), to the teacher of teachers (my father)… Needless to say, I had to bite my tongue.

I wasn’t a huge fan of school, but I won’t deny, it has played a huge role in who I am today.
