A review of Brian Foley’s The Constitution at Poetry Northwest.

August 26, 2014: American Field Notes
Written during a transcontinental journey from Maine to Seattle by way of the Southwest, this book is about 30 pages long and features 4 and 5 line notes, which could be interpreted as poems, prose, both, or neither. Get ready for small towns, vast landscapes, and a lot of stark language.

June 29, 2014: An Extensive Atlantic: Pentagoet Poems
Written during a retreat to the mid-coast and downeast regions of Maine. I stayed in Castine, at the Pentagoet Inn, and explored all of the Blue Hill Peninsula and surrounding areas. This poetry is relatively traditional in nature, and influenced by Adrienne Rich and Philip Booth.

May 25, 2014: MOMENT, Benzoned, and Vaster Landscapes: Ratanakiri Poems
Includes three “books” of poetry in one digital space for your perusal. At only 45 pages, it’s quite digestible. These poems are about Cambodia, addiction, desire, and other related topics. Please email gregbem at gmail dot com if you have any recommendations, comments, edits, questions, etc.

December 31, 2013: Nine Nights in Cambodia
Showcases 81 poems written in 9 days. That’s nine poems a day. Technically I wrote all the poems starting at or around 9PM every night, and each poem is 9 lines in length. That’s a whole lotta nines.

June 3, 2013: New York Visitations
Created in full during a recent trip to New York. It features poetry based around Flushing, Astoria, Coney Island, Prospect Heights, Midtown East, and Chelsea.

May 7, 2013: Deception & Whispers in the Light
Written during and after a road trip to Whidbey Island in May, 2013.

February 17, 2013: Late Stage Minor Opiate Addiction (And Eight Other Poems)
I wanted to write poems that reflected the tone of my thought process while on Vicodin, which, when moderately taken, does indeed slow life down, reduce stress, and allow the user to remain entirely functional in everyday activities and responsibilities. The mind on Vicodin is best described as the bottle suggests: drowsy. You feel tired. You feel sleepy but don’t want to pass out.

February 2, 2013: Self-Portrait at Virginia Mason Hospital or: The Clot Diaries
This is my book of poetry from my recent time at Virginia Mason, where I was an in-patient for 7 days, and where I learned so much about the compassion of humanity. The book is long at over 300 pages, but each page is essentially a line. Think Twitter. Think Rene Char.

January 14, 2013: Notebook
An e-chapbook of poetry composed during a writer’s retreat. It runs 61 pages and probably takes about fifteen minutes to read.

December 30, 2012: shakushaku: The First 598 Reviews
The document is unlike anything I’ve created before. Part found text, part adventure into the ether of spam, part commentary on digital creation and non-human creators, this portrait of user shakushaku’s spam reviews on local.com will hopefully find you well and keep you interested. Unlike my previous publications, I act in the role of “editor” here–completely unauthorized and not worried whatsoever.
