Comment on Barzun’s Primitivist Idea by rainnnn

Mon, 25 May 2020 11:45:36 +0000https://penstemon.wordpress.com/?p=3602#comment-44017I don’t like the concept of primitivism as to me that was not a better way. It doesn’t necessarily lead to ethics given the letter bomber lived that life. It can drive people crazy, but what I prefer is probably ending up a lot the same way of living– live simply. It has a lot of appeal to me but then as an introvert, it’s kind of natural.
Since January, every morning or afternoon, when the days are too hot and mornings are needed for other things, we read from a book. We read The Happiness Equation (I think it was its title); The Dude and the Zen Master; and now it’s Theft of the Spirit by Carl Hammerschlag, which I had read years go when it came out but it’s different when we take turns reading aloud, and not too much each day; so we can take in what was said. It’s as rewarding when we don’t agree on the ideas as when we do. Discussions often follow, which adds to the fun of reading aloud.

Oh, sure, but it’s been a while since I read Mattheisen. His novels are wonderful as well as his environmental non-fiction. I should re-read his novel “At Play In the Fields of the Lord”. And then “in The Sprit of Crazy Horse”… a great book!

I’m still considering Substack, but for now I’m committed to the WordPress site, which, despite its annoying commercialism (“Upgrade Now!”), does offer many useful features, in particular giving users more control of graphics and layout.

Hi, James! Interesting that you should come across my article eight years later! Thanks for reading it! I’m living up by McNeal now but still visit Bisbee often, playing music and eating out there.

Wed, 20 May 2020 18:37:27 +0000https://penstemon.wordpress.com/?p=3324#comment-42939I grew up in Old Bisbee and love your article. Our entire side yard was taken over by “trees of heaven” and we indeed call them cancer trees! Our neighbor above us had a beautiful China Berry tree. My Grandpa’s property across the street also had a few Chinaberry trees. He cut most of them down as his idea of landscaping seemed to be taking one tree out after another. Thanks for sharing.
