Welcome to the Penland Gallery & Visitors Center
The Penland Gallery & Visitor Center, located at the entrance of Penland School, serves as an inspiring introduction to contemporary craft. The gallery features curated exhibitions from March to December, showcasing the work of current and former Penland instructors, resident artists, and alumni from across the country. The Visitor Center Gallery provides a visual overview of Penland’s history and current programming, while the Lucy Morgan Sales Gallery showcases an impressive collection of functional and sculptural craft created by over one hundred fifty artists.
At Penland, craft involves continuous exploration of materials, techniques, and ideas. The gallery supports both the artists and their works, which embody this creative philosophy.

John & Robyn Horn Gallery
The Horn Gallery presents three curated exhibitions each year. These exhibitions offer an opportunity to explore contemporary concepts and practices, expand the definition of craft, investigate craft materials and techniques, and examine the ways in which artists influence and inspire one another.
Our mission is to enhance the significance of craft, build relationships with artists at all levels, and provide a platform that amplifies the ideas and voices of those working with craft materials and practices. We encourage conversations with our audience, which includes visitors, students, educators, collectors, and makers from across the country, fostering a growing appreciation for contemporary craft.
Lucy Morgan Gallery
The Lucy Morgan Gallery displays contemporary crafts curated by our staff, providing a glimpse into what’s happening in studio classrooms at Penland School and in artists’ studios across the country. The gallery showcases work by artists with a Penland affiliation, promoting both the artists and craft education.
The works available to purchase in the gallery encompass a variety of materials and techniques, including conceptual, decorative, and functional artworks. The gallery is open to visitors five days a week from March to December, with reduced hours during winter. Artwork from the gallery is also available for purchase year-round through our online shop.
FOCUS Gallery
Our small-format FOCUS Gallery presents five single-artist or small-group exhibitions annually. These exhibitions are intended to showcase a larger body of one artist’s work or present a curated focus on materiality or concepts. The Focus Gallery is programmed to highlight a range of craft media from both emerging and established artists, emphasizing functional or decorative craft. We offer an online component to our FOCUS exhibitions, providing an opportunity to view and purchase the artwork through our SHOP.
Visitors Center Gallery
The Visitors Center Gallery offers a chance to learn about the history of the craft school and its role in the national craft community. The gallery showcases both historical and contemporary pieces, accompanied by information and stories. Visitors can also watch a short film about the school, explore a historic timeline, and get assistance from staff to learn about the school’s programs and navigate the campus.
