When I picture what my educational philosophy will look like in practice, I picture a relaxed and welcoming classroom environment that is filled with respect and positivity. When my students arrive in my classroom, I want to greet them and ensure they feel that this is a comfortable space to be. When I begin my lesson, I want to speak with a certain authority that my students will respect and listen to, but not feel intimidated by. I want each and every student to feel safe and eager to contribute their thoughts and questions to a lesson. I was very shy growing up and often felt uneasy to do so. Even if it means students asking me their questions during a break or after class, I want them to feel comfortable at some point to ask their questions and/or express their thoughts. In addition to this, I want students to feel valued for being in my classroom and contributing to lessons. Therefore, I will do my best to always acknowledge and give a meaningful response to the comments and questions students bring up. Furthermore, in order to maintain my classroom as a safe space for everyone, I want students to clearly understand that I will not tolerate negative comments or behaviours, including bullying, harassment, or anything of the kind.
In regards to my lessons, I want to make sure that I present them in a way that is understandable to all types of learning. I will always use UDL to the best of my ability to ensure that all my students are able to access and understand the knowledge I am sharing with them. If students need extra help, I want them to feel comfortable asking me for assistance. I want to be available to my students as much as they need me to be. I would be happy to stay in my classroom during lunch hours for those students who want to drop in and receive extra help on finishing assignments or understanding new topics.
I am confident that as I gain more experience in the classroom, I will be able to expand on these ideas and add more details of what my educational philosophy will look like in practice. I expect the ideas and values of my educational philosophy to evolve over time as I figure out what works best for me and my students. From my experiences as a student, and as a volunteer in classrooms, I have a confident mental picture of what I would like my classroom to look like. As I continue through my practicums and later, my experiences in my future classroom, I am eager to start applying my educational philosophy, developing my abilities as a STEM teacher, and adding plants to my classroom!!
