Abraham Myerson and Isaac Goldberg, The German Jew (1933)*
“A relic of Tribalism, however vast and interesting, is no more hallowed than any other boulder of the primeval world. Every tribe was the chosen people of its own God . . ..”
Goldwin Smith, “The Jewish Question” (Oct. 1881)**
Most honest men do not favor meritocracy because honesty compels them to admit that they are not especially meritorious. They instead favor a system of favoritism in which they are the favorites. They wish to inhabit a world in which they are the beneficiaries of a large and gratuitous bias, whether of themselves individually or of their sect, clique or tribe.
This is partly an expression of their natural narcissism, the fond fancy that they are loved by God and the world as much as they are loved by themselves. And narcissism takes, as I said, individual and collective forms. Both forms involve the curious conceit that true justice would recognize the exceptional specialness of me and my tribe.
Honest men recognize their natural narcissism and try to keep it within reasonable bounds. They do not attempt to kill it, however, since wounded narcissism takes its revenge by transforming itself into the fiendish fancy that God and the world especially hate me and my tribe. Far from being “chosen,” a wounded narcissist thinks that he and his tribe are especially cursed and despised.
Or, perhaps more often, that he is personally marked as “chosen” because he beats his breast and laments that his tribe is especially cursed and despised.
Individualism is another pathology of natural narcissism. Whereas the ethno-masochist (or “race traitor”) hopes to lay up treasure in heaven by denouncing his tribe, the individualist (or “race denier”) hopes to lay up treasure in this world by saying that tribes are things of the past.
To which the slavering tribesmen who gather round him say, “speak (if you must) for yourself.”
Individualism is the doctrine that each man should be judged on his own merits, and this doctrine is deeply distasteful to men who have few merits on which to be judged. It has at the same time great appeal to men who are so vain as to suppose they can make their way in this world on their own. Individualism also has a certain superficial appearance of high-mindedness, which may be why it is so often recommended to idealistic sheep by cynical wolves.
Jesus said that those who live by the sword will die by the sword, suggesting a system of reciprocal justice that those who live by impartiality should ponder in the small hours of the night.
There are many good things to admire in the individualists’ millennium, but there is no way to get to that happy land from here. This is why there may be “neither Jew nor Greek” in Christ, but there is and will remain Jew and Greek (and Bantu and Brahmin) in this world. Any man who tears up his tribal membership card is a goner because most men have not torn up their tribal membership cards.
And a tribe will have an individualist in the cooking pot before the individualist finishes explaining that he is colorblind. “All the worse for you,” say the triumphant tribesmen, as they stir in some peppers and yams.
There is a great deal to like about Tucker Carlson, but his crusade against tribalism (“identity politics”) is a lost and dangerous cause. It strikes me as equivalent to warning a convicted man against joining a prison gang, perhaps assuring him that the hyena packs in the prison shower will love him for the same reasons he loves himself. Whatever colorblind codswallop one may have thought before the year 2020, the last five years have taught all but drooling idiots that this world is a battleground of tribes.
This is why so many erstwhile individualists (mostly white) are taping together the pieces of their shredded tribal membership cards. The last five years taught them that the individualists’ millennium may somehow exist “in Christ,” but that it was only a perverse and pathological form of narcissism to believe that the individualists’ millennium had arrived.
Now the sun has gone down and circling wolf-packs are giving throat to their fearsome hunting howls.
I oppose predatory tribalism in my own and other tribes, but I now equally oppose the jejune fantasy that I can cover my own back or trust random strangers to do it for me. The past five years have shown that this world is a prison shower, not a Sunday school picnic, and that a steaming cooking pot awaits every self-infatuated goop who thinks personal merit and cosmic favor allow him to dispense with the aid of a sheltering tribe.

Set down the White Man’s burden—
’Twas never yours to bear—
Your lessons were not wanted,
And even less your prayer;
All fluttered folk and wild,
Prefer their wonted ways—
Half-devil and half-child,
Not wards or proteges.
Set down the White Man’s burden—
Let other folk abide
Veil not their threats of terror
Check not their shows of pride;
By open speech and simple
An hundred times made plain,
You’re not your brother’s keeper
You do not feel his pain.
Set down the White Man’s burden—
Let savage wars run red;
Let Famine run its course;
Let sickness stack its dead;
For when your goal seems nearest—
The end for others sought—
Sure Sloth and heathen Folly
Will bring your hopes to naught.
Set down the White Man’s burden—
Let tawdry kings preside
Science and sanitation
Revolt their racial pride.
When schools that you have built them,
To ruin and squalor fall,
You’ll see on every blackboard
This fierce, vindictive scrawl:
“Set down the White Man’s ‘burden’—
And reap your just reward:
The blame of those you’d better
The hate of those you’d guard
The cry of hosts you’d humor
(Unwilling!) toward your ‘light’:—
Why brought ye us from ‘darkness’
We nocturns love the night?”
Set down the White Man’s burden—
They’ve a new load for thee—
’Tis guilt, and shame, and sorrow,
Amends, apology;
For all your teary penance,
All truckling you shall do,
Your angry benefactors
Shall scorn your Gods and you.
Set down the White Man’s burden—
They’ve a new task for thee,
First on the graves who it once bore
You must while blubbering pee;
But by this act you should not hope
To atone for the crime,
Of having born the burden:
Payment will take all time.
