Childhood memories can be incredibly sharp, and sometimes it’s the most trivial things that seem to have the most staying power. Being locked in a coal shed isn’t trivial, of course; it seems a terrible punishment for an involuntary infraction of social norms!

Gerard, what you remember about the 1940s I find very interesting. I had two younger brothers, one born in 1938, the other one in 1941. I have so many memories of them what they were like during the war and soon after the war. My memories of them at this very young age are very good ones. However, they were in lots of ways very different. One of them is still alive, and we are having a close relationship, which was not always possible with the older brother who had a very difficult life, bringing him often into conflict with the law.

]]>This line brought back memories galore for me: “This wanting to be perfect in whatever he undertook is what plagued him for the rest of his life.” My mother wanted me to be perfect in everything I undertook, and it took decades for me to learn the life-saving “rule of good enough.”

]]>You say Frank was slow. You seem to be concerned now, Gerard, that Frank’s slowness was a major hurdle for him. What about severe slowness in old age? Can that be a major problem too in coping with life: What do you think?
