After 75 years since Big J. (small J. then) became a pupil in 1A at Archbishop Temple’s, a former classmate suddenly appears. If time has dulled your memory, then top boy at the end of first year’s exams by a single mark might remedy it. I should have asked Lusted (form master that year) for a recount. Still, I did get a prize for something. Sorry to hear you gripe about Fieldgate (form master from Year 2) I liked him and Latin. He was strict about homework (cane and book for absent work). Alas, my school life was cut short in Year 4. The Luftwaffe’s Blitz on London had condemned me to a life like ‘Pip’– but without Great Expectations. It finally caught up with me, and my absence was too prolonged to make up for lost time. At 15, it forced me to leave. Double that number and I began studying at the Open University for a Maths degree. Between 1970 and 2000 I went back to school to teach what I had missed at Archbishop Temple’s, and saw life from both sides of the desk.  Btw I read some of your archives; one in which you were unable to recall the names of all your class. Perfectly natural; these are some who at one time were in the ‘A’ stream while I was there.
