On the day Barack Obama was inaugurated, I wrote, “I’m hoping for a new era in our nation’s history and the hope is fresh and new.”
The hope is old, worn, and tattered and there is a mere sliver left, the sliver that whispers, the darkest hour is just before dawn.
I came upon this article today in the Detroit Free Press:
What Germany can teach America about confronting the past

Whispers of a fragile hope
•July 10, 2020 • 1 CommentI’m back
•July 9, 2020 • Leave a CommentI started this blog in 2007 and left in 2009 when Facebook became the thing to do.
I plan to share my knitting, my lovely grands, as I am now a veteran gramma, and my thoughts on the state of our country. I welcome all who are looking for a safe space.

real patriotism
•January 21, 2009 • Leave a CommentPatriotism is proud of a country’s virtues and eager to correct its deficiencies; it also acknowledges the legitimate patriotism of other countries, with their own specific virtues. The pride of nationalism, however, trumpets its country’s virtues and denies its deficiencies, while it is contemptuous toward the virtues of other countries. It wants to be, and proclaims itself to be, “the greatest”, but greatness is not required of a country; only goodness is. -Sydney J. Harris, journalist and author (1917-1986)

the year end and beginning in review
•January 8, 2009 • 3 Commentsthere has been knitting.
cobblestone pullover by jared flood. i made this for my seattle son and he has promised to send me a picture of him wearing it but haven’t gotten it yet. are you reading this, brian?

pencil cases for sudan/darfur
these are based on a pattern created by kieran. if you visit his website he has some beautiful prints.
last christmas my daughter bought me the book What is the What? by david eggers. i finally read it this summer and was touched by this story. one of the people i see most days at work is a very tall, thin, black man w/ a strong accent. he is one of the lost boys.
i know that making pencil cases will not change one iota the horrendousness of the situation in africa but i am a firm believer that acts of love and kindness make a difference to the giver and the receiver and so i am doing my small part. if you are interested in knitting, crocheting or sewing some pencil cases here’s the site. i found this site through wendy.

real knitting content!
•November 14, 2008 • 2 Comments
this project is the most fun i’ve had in eons. (i know, it’s a long and lingering life. thanks, elmer, for the quote.) this could be called the potato chip blanket because once you start you can’t stop. i started this about 10 days ago whilst waiting for seattle son to send me his measurements so i could finish his cobblestone sweater. i can’t put it down. i have lots of sock yarn i bought that will never be made into socks so i will make some rows all one color. thank you shelly!
the cobblestone sweater in lana grossa superfine merino 2000, the body and one sleeve are done. i’m making the smallest size for my darling son in confederate grey and military green.
and what would a post be without pics of darling ella. she turns 2 tomorrow.
she uses that magic wand too! ribbet.
one last thing, go wish my favorite sochual werker a HAPPY BIRTHDAY. be sure to comment on her ass.

artsy-fartsy flower shots.
ella loves talking on the phone and wearing gramma’s glasses. she talks all the time now and loves to repeat anything she hears. cussin’ granny has cleaned up her vocab for the time being.
she and scrappy have been betrothed since before they were born. yesterday they finally met.
sharing animal crackers……..
i love the look she’s giving him in this pic, and his indifference to the whole thing.
we clap for anything.
knitting content……
there has been knitting, although not much. i finished a sweater for ella’s mom that i started last fall. pics to follow when i get it blocked.
