I’m the Executive Editor of The Local, an independent online magazine in Toronto that has won multiple awards for our long-form journalism.
As a magazine writer, I’ve published features in places like The Walrus, The Guardian, Hazlitt, Toronto Life, Slate, The Believer, The Globe and Mail, and The Toronto Star. I write long-form, narrative journalism on a wide range of topics—an investigation into a mysterious Chinese dance troupe, an in-depth look at the lives of captive elephants, features on big complex issues from homelessness to end-of-life decision making to autism education and transit. I also write personal essays, cultural criticism, and travel articles. In the past, I’ve written a books column at Canadian Business, a sports column at Sharp Magazine, and a social-studies column at Hazlitt.
I’ve won multiple prizes at the National Magazine Awards, including the 2022 Editor Grand Prix, and my work has twice appeared in the anthology Best Canadian Essays. My Walrus story on the business of international education won the 2022 Canadian Hillman Prize for Journalism, the CAJ Award for Written Feature, and the National Magazine Award for Investigative Journalism.
