   New Zealand, I understand, used to be a fairly low-crime country. It seems to have followed the pattern of the United Kingdom in experiencing a rocketing level of crime from the 1960’s onwards. This does not seem to be related to poverty, given that both countries’ wealth increased substantially in the last fifty years. Indeed, I hazard a guess that the increase in wealth is likely as not to have contributed to an increase in incivility and coarseness, for example, television in children’s bedrooms tends to promote a kind of egotism that challenges the traditional family’s values, such as eating together at the table. I am sure now that poverty has been the great red herring and we have ignored something of far greater importance – culture. In England, where I live, standards of conduct and behaviour are often diabolical to say the least, and this is entirely normal. This is not connected to social class in any simplistic way, indeed, the middle classes ape the underclass ceaselessly, whether they declare it or not. There is an almost total obsession with democratising, and equalising, and very little serious discussion about what matters, what is of value, and what is worth preserving or defending. It is a kind of mad frivolity. Explanations morph magically into excuses at every turn, and countless examples abound of an is being converted into an ought, say “marriage has been in decline for decades, therefore we must provide support for non traditional arrangements”. Meaningful punishment is now an historical relic. England is an amoral swamp. It is not a good country anymore. We have lost our grip on what truly matters in life, and replaced it with technological marvels, a disastrous trade-off. I sense that a similar cultural transition has occurred in New Zealand.

   The increase in wealth hasn’t touch the poor. At least 219,627 New Zealand Children live in poverty. Add their parents and a minimum of one sibling, and you’ll find about one in 5 New Zealanders live under debt slavery and in abject poverty.

   The culture does, of course, play a major part and is the icing on the poverty cake.

   There’s also a race angle, a racial dimension to some of the violence in both countries, but they are not the same–perhaps mirror images reflected in opposite directions.

   Ultimately, like England, one of NZ’s illegitimate fathers, this country’s “military tradition” forms its bedrock of violence. Remove the militaristic boondoggles and you’ll find a bunch of ordinary, very likable folks in both countries.

    new zealand is not safe for visitors who have girls and woman in their families. we have one of the highest rape counts in the world; its out of control because the nz government and police cover them all up for one reason: protect the tourism industry!
