Framing: starting guides
Many people mistakenly see frames as simply a respectable name for “spin” or persuasion (marketing/PR). Actually, we think in frames all the time – it’s how we make sense of “raw” experience. Going beyond the popular misconception of framing as “superficial wordplay” is one of the main aims of this blog. Here are a few short intros to get you started on this most important of 21st century ideas:
- Framing: A Short Primer – Brief intro. The very least that you should know.
- The Metaphor is the Message – Frames involve conceptual metaphor.
- The Cognitive Unconscious – Our use of frames is mostly unconscious, automatic.
- Essentials of framing – On George Lakoff’s ‘moral politics’ frames.

“News” & political framing
Here are some examples from this site on how framing may be applied to political and media issues:
- “Benefit tourists”
- How not to frame “workers”
- Endless “austerity” framing
- Iraq War Framing for Dummies
- “Human rights” framing
- “Flatlined” economy
