PH completes sweep of 3 triathlon golds

RAYONG, Thailand – The Philippine triathlon team swept all three gold medals on Wednesday, seizing the women’s, men’s, and mixed relay events held at the Leam Mae Phim Beach here.
Kira Ellis and Raven Alcoseba bagged two gold medals for the day after being part of the women’s team relay and mixed team relay events.

Defending individual champion Fer Casares also won a pair of golds for being with the men’s and mixed relay squad for the Philippines.

A late switch brought Ellis to the women’s team relay race in what Philippine triathlon officials described as a calculated move in their bid for a gold medal after Indonesia swept all team events in aquathlon on Tuesday.

It paid off with Ellis joining forces with Alcoseba and Kim Mangrobang for the Philippines’ first gold in triathlon on Wednesday morning to finish the 300m swim, 8km bike, and 2km run course at one hour, 10 minutes, and 14 seconds.

“It was a last-minute change in the schedule,” said the 19-year-old Ellis on the switch from Erika Nicole Burgos in the women’s team relay. “I wasn’t supposed to race but then we thought, if I start for the team and Raven finishes with the team, we really have a strong chance at getting gold. It worked out. We tried to strategized and get a gap for whoever and try to lead through the entire race.”

The men’s team that also included Matthew Hermosa and Inaki Lorbes was the next to capture the gold, checking in at 1:04:05, 10 seconds ahead of Indonesia.

Battling the scorching heat at the race course, the mixed team relay of Ellis, Kim Remolino, Alcoseba, and Casares also brought home the gold but not without drama.

Casares, the team’s anchor, was meted with a 10-second penalty during the transition from swim to bike but he managed to wipe out the gap to win the gold for his team by four seconds over Indonesia with a time of 1:30:31.

“The MTR was around 11 o clock and it’s very hot in Thailand, and I don’t do well with heat. I just tried to psych myself up starting for the team again. I knew it would be a lot harder for me to get a gap, let alone, come together with Indonesia, but I tried my best for the team.” said Ellis.

“Fer as our anchor, we knew he is a good cyclist and a runner so we were really screaming at him with the run and the bike to catch. He got a penalty and it was still quite close. My heart rate was jumping up and down,” Ellis said.

The PH team competes in the duathlon events on Thursday.

FAB Sunrise Sprint to ignite passion for triathlon

Aspiring triathletes and adventure seekers yearning to experience the rush of multisport racing – without the grueling demands of full-distance training – will take center stage at the FAB (Freeport Area of Bataan) Sunrise Sprint (S2) on Sunday (Nov. 16) in Mariveles.

Dubbed as S2, the event serves as an exciting sub-category of the inaugural 5150 FAB Triathlon, offering an energetic and approachable racing format for newcomers and returning competitors alike. Featuring a 750-m open-water swim, 20-km bike ride and 5-km run, the race distills the essence of triathlon into a compact yet thrilling experience – ideal for beginners, comeback athletes or even seasoned racers looking to sharpen their edge.

Set on an Olympic-style course that mirrors the intensity and camaraderie of longer-distance races, S2 is expected to draw participants across various age groups and categories. Among those to watch are young standouts Eunice Caluya and Kurt Julian in the 15-19 division, Adrian Bangkiling leading the 20-24 pack, and competitive 25-29 bets Ryan delos Reyes, Patrick Tamboong, Raejohn Legaspi and Nathalia Pili.

“Events like the S2 are essential to developing the next generation of Filipino triathletes. By giving beginners and young athletes a positive, well-supported race environment, we hope to inspire more people to stay active and eventually take on longer distances,” said Princess Galura, president and managing director of the organizing Sunrise Events, Inc.

Meanwhile, the FABulous Run will take place at 5 p.m. today (Saturday), serving as the kickoff event for tomorrow’s major race day. The route features a single-loop, counter-clockwise course around Luzon Avenue within the Freeport.

Athlete Check-in, Kit Claim, and the Athlete Expo will be held at the AFAB Administration Building, while the Official Race Briefing is scheduled for 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at the FAB Auditorium.

“Holding the Sunrise Sprint in Bataan is intentional. The province has embraced endurance sports and continues to invest in venues, safety, and community support that make it an ideal home for athletes starting their journey. Every start line begins with a small step, and for many, that step begins here,” she added.

The event offers much more than a race – it’s a gateway to the triathlon lifestyle, promoting physical literacy, confidence and community engagement. Designed to encourage participation from all walks of life, it invites first-time racers, recreational runners and elite athletes to share the same start line and spirit of competition.

Aside from the individual categories, relay events will also spice up the action, featuring all-male, all-female and mixed teams. Van Linden towers over younger rivals; Ramo triumphs

DAVAO City – Eric van der Linden defied age and expectations, turning back the clock to outperform competitors half his age as he claimed the IRONMAN 70.3 Davao championship here on Sunday with remarkable endurance and competitive spirit.

In the women’s division, Leyann Ramo continued her winning streak by putting up another dominant performance to seize the crown. The race, featuring a 1.9km swim, 90km bike, and 21.1km run, also highlighted the newly developed Davao City Coastal Road.

Van der Linden, the 50-year-old Olympian from Schagen, North Holland, built an early lead with a strong swim and bike performance, which proved crucial as he withstood a determined late charge from John Patrick Ciron and Franklin Yee in the run segment to clinch the overall men’s championship in 04:19:27.

Meanwhile, Ramo showcased her strength in all events, but shone brightly in the bike and run stages, securing the overall women’s title in 04:48:18.

Ranged against younger rivals, van der Linden proved that experience and tenacity can outshine youth, as he outpaced the field to claim victory in the premier endurance race organized by The IRONMAN Group and hosted by Davao City.

Van der Linden set the tone early, dominating the swim and bike stages of the grueling race. His powerful start (00:27:50) created a substantial lead, giving him the cushion needed to withstand a fierce challenge from Ciron and Yee, who both mounted strong comeback in the final run stages.

Despite his Filipino rivals’ valiant effort, van der Linden’s early advantage and steady pace in the run allowed him to cross the finish line first, securing a well-earned victory. He timed 02:19:06 in bike and closed out with 01:27:18 clocking in the run.

Ciron posted a 00:30:47 time in swim and 02:22:42 in bike but flashed his running skills to finish in 01:21:52 for a 04:19:45 clocking for second overall, while Yee, who timed 00:32:59 and 02:22:15 in the first two events, respectively, churned out the fastest clocking in run (01:20:07) to snare third place in 04:20:25.

Former full IRONMAN Philippines champion Petr Lukosz of the Czech Republic came in fourth overall in 04:24:49, while Jorry Ycong placed fifth in 04:26:08 followed by Satar Salem (04:26:10), recent Bohol 5150 winner Irienold Reig, Jr. (04:26:39), M.R. Santiago (04:28:20), John Leerams Chicano (04:30:14) and A.R. Toroganan (04:31:30) in that order.

In women’s division, Ramo, from Sultan Naga Dimaporo, Lanao del Norte, showcased her rising prowess by capturing the title with relentless determination. Fresh off a victory in Subic, Ramo posted leg times of 00:29:47 (swim), 02:34:37 (bike) and 01:38:44 (run).

Sophie Capistrano placed a distant second in 05:12:14 with leg times of 00:35:44, 02:38:18, and 01:52:03, while Chloe Jane Ong wound up third in 05:21:05 with clockings of 00:36:29, 02:40:20, and 01:56:04.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Davao also served as a grand showcase for the newly developed Davao City Coastal Road, adding a scenic yet challenging backdrop to the grueling race. Both van der Linden and Ramo exemplified the spirit of the competition, combining experience, resilience, and strategy to emerge as champions in their respective divisions.

Van der Linden also led the age-group winners in 50-54, with Ciron claiming the 25-29 crown, and Yee ruling the 18-24 division. Ycong topped the 30-34 class, Lukosz emerged on top of the 40-44 group, while Ramo also ran away with the women’s 30-34 title.

Capistrano settled for the women’s 18-24 trophy, and Ong bagged the 35-39 title.(PR)

Tight finish up as IRONMAN Davao 70.3 unfolds

Mauricio Mendez and Czech Radka Kahlefeldt seek no less than a pair of title repeat but expect nothing but a fierce fightback from a set of rivals out to bounce back from their previous defeat as the second Alveo IRONMAN 70.3 Davao fires off today (Sunday) at the Azuela Cove in Davao.

Mendez charged back in the closing run stage to emerge the first-ever champion of the 1.9K swim, 90K bike, 21K run event presented by Petron in Davao last year. But while the Mexican star said he’s ready and all pumped up to go for another crown, he believes the rest of the compact field are also coming into the event in top form, guaranteeing a spirited battle and explosive finish the way it was last year.

“I think everyone has a chance so I think it’s a matter getting focused and ready for race day and give everything you’ve got,” said Mendez, who clocked 3:50:32 to score a come-from-behind victory over Aussie ace Tim Reed last year.

“For every race, I just give it my best in training, focusing on what my coach asks me and just trying to stay healthy,” added the 23-year-old Mexican star.

But Reed and the rest of the pro men’s field are out to foil his repeat bid in the event serving as the first of a series of Ironman races organized and conducted by Sunrise Events, Inc.

“It’s terrific to be back here. I’ve always said that the Philippines is simply the atmosphere in racing. The support – it really inspires the passion every time I race here,” said Reed.

Others in the fold are fellow Aussies Tim Van Berkel, David Mainwaring, Matt Lewis and Fraser Walsh, Anthony Coster of France, Bahrain’s Eric Watson and Markus Rolli of Germany.

Like Mendez, Kahlefeldt braces for a tough outing despite fashioning out a wire-to-wire victory the last time out although the Czech ace is oozing with confidence heading to her title-retention drive in one of her favorite places to race.

“I love racing in the Philippines and really excited to be back here in Davao,” said Kahlefeldt, adding that the atmosphere is “just amazing.” “Everybody is ready and this is a great place to race, a great place to be.”

She looks forward to bettering her previous 4:25:38 clocking against the likes of Caroline Steffen of Switzerland and Dimity Lee Duke of Australia, both winners of other Philippine triathlons, and Guam’s Manami Iijima, who ruled the Subic 5150 late last year.

For results, visit the event’s website at www.ironman.com/davao703.

Over 2,200 entries from 38 countries are vying in the event , which features individual and relay competitions, that has also lured bidders from United Arab Emirates, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Mexico, Ukraine, India, Malaysia, Qatar, the US, Belgium, Spain, Italy, New Caledonia, Singapore, South Africa, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Great Britain, Korean, Norway, Thailand, Switzerland, Greece, Kuwait, New Zealand, Turkey, China, Guam, Mexico, Panama and Taiwan.

SEI founder Wilfred Uytengsu has guaranteed another successful staging of the event with Davao emerging as the new triathlon destination with the all-out support of the city officials.

Backers of the event are title sponsor Alveo, an AyalaLand company, presentor Petron, venue hosts Lungsod ng Dabaw, Azuela Cove and the Enderun Tent, bike course partners Davao del Norte, Panabo, Tagum and Carmen, official courier and logistics partner 2Go Express, official swim cap TYR, official energy gel GU, official nutrition Vitargo, official eyewear Rudy Project, and Aboitiz Power, Davao Light, David’s Salon, Davao Metro Shuttle, Prudential Guarantee, and media partners ONE Sports on Cignal, the Philippine Star, Trilife, AsiaTri.com and Finisher Pix.(pr)
