Lod Tunduh

As mentioned in my previous post, my family and I just returned from a much needed holiday in Bali. It has been 8 years since we visited Bali and a lot has changed in that time with a lot of development gone ahead.

We spent an amazing 2 weeks, staying in both Ubud and Seminyak. In Ubud we stayed in a private villa in Lod Tunduh, just 10 minutes drive from Ubud town and it was great to be able to get away from the tourist areas of Kuta and Legian to experience a more traditional Bali. It was great to get a better sense of how local Balinese live and carry out their day to day lives. Needless to say their lives are very simple and very different to ours back home in Australia which always makes me wonder who has it right, us or them?

The below shot was a rushed shot taken in the alleyway just outside our villa as one of the local men was heading out for a stroll.

I’m still here

In making my long awaited return to blogging I thought I would rip off the title of one of the all-time worst movies (sorry Joaquin but it was a waste of time). I am in fact still here, I have just taken a break from documenting my photography and involving myself in the blogging community for the good part of a year now. I feel like I have finally reached a point where I have more time to start blogging again and sharing some images, both old and new, however will not be making any promises on the regularity of my posts. I started a new job in January and my daughter is now 16 months old and this continues to consume a lot of my time and motivation, however after returning from Bali just yesterday my motivation towards photography is again slowly returning. To top this off I will be attending a workshop run by Christian Fletcher and Nick Reins (two of Australia’s best) in the Blue Mountains in June and this has really got me excited.

Over easter we headed up to Gerringong on the NSW south coast. Gerringong is located just south of Kiama and is a beautiful little community topped with great beaches and scenery. After a doing some research on Flickr and other photo sites and didn’t really come across any great inspiration for locations so I had to undertake a bit of scouting of the area. As it turned out one of the most interesting coastal features, a tidal pool near the boat ramp, was just down the road from where we were staying so access was not a problem. I took this shot just before sunrise and loved the beautiful blue tones and the clarity of the water. I really hope to go back to this area soon as I loved every minute of it and it was a great change in scenery to the far south coast we normally visit.

Spring Blossoms

I managed to get out for sunrise last weekend as I had been wanting to shoot the new Spring blossoms along Lake Burley Griffin. I took the same shot during Autumn (which I will post soon) and wanted to get a shot during Spring to contrast the two.

Spring in Canberra is normally very windy and couple this with the fact that Lake Burley Griffin is used by Rowers most mornings I considered myself lucky to get still water allowing the reflection of the tree line to create the symmetrical lead in line to Telstra Tower in the background.

This one was taken with the D90 and Sigma 70-200mm.

My little girl is growing up……..fast

Hi folks, sorry for the major lack of posts lately I will be trying to make more time for posting and commenting in the coming weeks.

The reason for the hiatus, Little Mia, is growing up so fast and will be 8 months this weekend. My wfie and I have watched her develop from a helpless little baby into a beautiful little girl full of life and personality. Even though it has been a hard slog it has been very rewarding and I think we can both say without doubt that we couldn’t imagine life without her in it now.

We reached a major milestone last week in that it was the first night that Mia has slept through the night since she was born. A beautiful 7 hours of sleep for all has made such a huge difference to everyones well being. It is amazing how much you take things for granted before you have children and then once they arrive it becomes a lot easier to enjoy the cimple things in life.

We look forward to what the future holds for us and being able to watch little Mia grow year on year.

Just a few more recent photos taken over the past 2 months. The bottom 2 are the most recent and were taken on my new iPhone (man I love this thing, you always have a decent camera with you).

Finally time for a new post!

Hey guys,

Well it has been 2 months since my last post as work and my daughter have taken up all but a small amount of my spare time. That’s not to say that I haven’t been taking photos, as I still try to grab every opportunity that appears.

The other week we managed to get up to Sydney for a friends wedding and spend a long weekend up there. We tried to visit a few new places that we haven’t been before and one of those was Observatory Hill. I am pretty amazed that I had never been there before as it is about 5 minutes walk from the Rocks. Having a infant means that it is very hard to try and get to a location during a time where the best light is possible and therefore I had to take what was available. Unfortunately just as I was setting up it started to rain and I literally only had time for one panoramic set before I had to pack up and get my daughter out of the rain. It is a lovely spot and one I hope to visit at sunset sometime as I have seen some fantastic images from up.

Dusk at Parliament House

Now that winter is here most of the colour has disappeared from the Canberran landscape so I have decided to start to try and capture the Capitals landmarks in a different light to what I have seen before.

The shot below is not a new composition of Parliament house, but I think the conditions that this image was captured under (mainly overcast and cold) gives this iconic image a more artistic feel to it. Obviously there has been a bit of post processing to the image but the original RAW file gave a very unique colour cast to the whole image which I think was created by the combination of the artificial lighting and the reflection of that lighting from the overhead cloud?

I love the detail in the foreground of this image however the thing I don’t like is that the blur in the sky creates the illusion that Parliament House itself is not sharply in focus. I have zoomed into 100% and can assure you that it is. I also don’t like the noise in the sky created by the long exposure.

I have also started using my ultra wide zoom again a lot more, it has been a while but I think my skills are progressing enough to make some good compositions with it as opposed to previously when I wasn’t quite getting it right.

More Autumn Colours

With Autumn about to come to an end I have been trying to catch the last of the colour around Canberra before winter sets in and the days become short and cold.

This shot was taken about a week and a half ago in Weston Park in Yarralumla just after sunrise. As it gets colder the number of people out and about, especially around the lake reduces considerably, mostly only the rowers out for their morning training.

After some help on modern framing options

Hi all

I was wondering whether anyone had any experience with modern framing options such as accrylic or aluminium mounting. I am looking at sourcing someone (preferably Australian) who does this type of thing, preferably just the framing so I can control the print quality (unless people know someone who do both well?). I have done a bit of research and currently the main one I know about is Created for Life on the Central Coast offering Fuljiflex Crystal Archive Gold and Accrylic framing but I was wondering whether anyone else could make some suggestions so I can compare and come to a decision.

Bungendore Windmill

When I am driving around the countryside I am always looking for a good windmill to shoot and I managed to find this one just outside of Bungendore just near the Capital Wind Farm. I think that windmills are typically Australian and combined with the golden colours of the of the ground and the blue of clear sky it seems to always be a good combination.

I have always wanted to take a slow shutter shot of a windmill to get that surreal blurred look in the blades and this was the day as the use of an 3 stop ND filter and Polariser managed to slow the speed down long enough to blur the movement. Turns out you don’t actually need to slow a speed to blur the blades, especially when there is a bit of wind about.

Canberra’s Poplars

Another shot from in and around Lake Burley Griffin, this time a focus on the coulours of the Poplars. I wanted to try for a simple composition focusing just on the trees themselves and letting their form and colour create the scene for me. I have gone a bit high key to try and minimise the distraction in the background but may need to try some sort of blur as well now that I think of it.
