Brief Bio

I am Jibaben Patel Chair (AI) Professor and Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Gandhinagar. I am the coordinator of the Centre for AI-Driven Innovations@IITGN. I also lead the Lingo Research Group, focusing on Indic Large Language Models (LLMs), Multimodal AI, Scholarly AI, Interpretable and Explainable AI, and Code-Mixed NLP.

Our research group works at the intersection of large-scale language models, multilingual AI, and data-centric AI systems, with a focus on building foundational technologies for India and other low-resource regions. We contributed Hindi and Gujarati corpora to BLOOM (BigScience 2022), spearheaded the Ganga LLM initiative—India’s first from-scratch small language models designed for edge deployment—and currently co-lead data curation and evaluation for the ₹175+ Cr EKA Project, India’s largest 120B+ parameter foundation model effort.

We have released widely adopted datasets and tools that underpin multilingual safety, benchmarking, and evaluation, including PythonSaga, Triveni, SangrahATox, UnityAI-Guard, and Eka-Eval, which spans 50+ benchmarks and supports systematic evaluation of multilingual and low-resource LLMs.

Beyond LLMs, our group is known for foundational contributions to scholarly document AI (OCR++, TabLeX, LineEX, NLPExplorer, CL Scholar) and for pioneering research in code-mixed and multilingual NLP (CoMI-LINGUA, Commentator, PHINC, HINGE, MUTANT), including leadership of global shared tasks at SemEval and WMT.

I lead large-scale national research programs, including the MoE Centre of Excellence on AI for Sustainable Cities and DST-FIST initiatives , and have co-founded the IndoML Symposium and India’s first GenAI Summer School. I have mentored 150+ undergraduate researchers, many of whom have co-authored top-tier A*/A papers and progressed to leading PhD programs and industrial research labs worldwide.

Internships and Project Oppurtunites

Internships: I am always looking forward to working with motivated students, with both remote and on-campus internship options. However, on-campus internships for external students are offered only via IITGN’s Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP).

Project Opportunities: Please check Sponsored Projects for open positions and follow our group on X and LinkedIn for updates.
