There's a story I heard that when Nam June Paik
first arrived in New York, Yves Klein told him:
"write it all down while the language is new."
In 2002, came up from Virginia and quickly realized
I'd have to make a choice between a polaroid habit
or an apartment. Cold turkey, I chose the city,
but plunked down what I had for a little snapshot
camera and set a goal of ten thousand images in that
first year. Not one of these fragments was as
beautiful as those chemical squares, but it was
landmark and timestamps and a quilt of fragments:
blackouts and filmshoots and first glimpses of folks
who became friends for a while.
