About me
I am passionate about building intelligent systems that can understand, perceive, and interact with the world around them. Currently, I lead the robotics team within Vladlen Koltun’s research organization at Apple. Previously, I led the Embodied AI Lab at Intel, where I worked on cutting-edge projects spanning artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, computer graphics, natural language processing, and robotics. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, spending time with family, and exploring hobby projects that combine electronics, 3D printing, and coding. I am driven by a vision to make AI and robotics more accessible to everyone.
Short Bio
Matthias holds a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering (Math Minor) from Texas A&M University and a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from KAUST, specializing in persistent aerial tracking and sim-to-real transfer for autonomous navigation. He began his career at P+Z Engineering, developing mild-hybrid electric machines for BMW, and has since led research organizations in robotics and AI while excelling as a strong individual contributor. Matthias has authored over 35 publications in top-tier venues, including Nature, Science Robotics, PAMI, CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, ICML, NeurIPS, RSS, CoRL, ICRA, and IROS. Several of his works have been presented as Oral or Spotlight (Highlight) papers, with some also nominated for Best Paper awards. His accolades include Outstanding Reviewer at CVPR’18 and Best Paper Awards at ECCV’18 UAVision and CVPR’23 3DMV workshops.
