Domesticated

Nightbitch is as harsh as the title suggests. Rachel Yoder wrote the book in 2021 about the anger she felt after becoming a mother. Director Marielle Heller connected with the novel and adapted it 3 years later. Everyone thought Nightbitch would be a major comeback and possible awards contender for Amy Adams. As much as I love Adams, Nightbitch is a gross body horror comedy that didn’t get the same attention from the Academy as The Substance. Similar to Tully, I don’t care for overly negative films about motherhood. Of course I’m not a mother, so I can’t relate to the changes and expectations that they go through.

The movie reads like a book with frequent internal monologues that start to get repetitive. Adams put on extra weight to play Mother who fantasizes about lashing out. Her son is more than a handful and she doesn’t always connect with fellow mothers Jen, Miriam, and Liz. Scoot McNairy plays her husband who travels on the weekdays and leaves her to struggle on her own. Mother giving up her dreams of being an artist causes pent-up frustration. The title becomes very literal when Mother starts to transform into a nocturnal animal.

This would be the second time Adams voiced a dog after Underdog. Eating meat while growing patches of fur, a tail, and extra nipples can be a bit much. Jessica Harper plays older librarian Norma who gives her a book about magical women. Only then does she realize her Mennonite mother was also secretly a dog. It doesn’t end well for the family cat, but her son starts to behave when they act like dogs. Her marriage nearly ends until she finds personal freedom without sacrificing her family. Nightbitch is way more bark than bite.

Nine Lives is the worst thing to happen to Kevin Spacey’s career (at the time). Nothing is more degrading than a 2 time Oscar winner playing a man trapped in a cat’s body. Of all the movies to rip-off, why the 2006 remake of The Shaggy Dog? The similarities couldn’t be more obvious with a workaholic husband and father neglecting his family until he’s forced to reconnect in the body of a pet. I can understand having a premise like this in the 2000’s, but Nine Lives came out in 2016. It was so bad that director Barry Sonnenfeld never directed another film. I knew it would be bad from the start when I saw Spacey skydive onto a building against an obvious green screen.

Tom Brand is the billionaire owner of Firebrand obsessed with constructing the tallest tower in America. It’s an egocentric desire that matches his character. Robbie Amell plays Tom’s grown up son David from his first marriage who just wants to make him proud. Jennifer Garner plays Tom’s current wife Lara who got used to him never being around. Malina Weissman plays their young daughter Rebecca who really wants a cat for her birthday. Tom doesn’t disappoint her by adopting a cat at the last minute. Christopher Walken plays the mysterious cat whisper Perkins who acts almost exactly like his character from Click. Mark Consuelos plays Tom’s underhanded associate Ian who nearly lets him die when he falls off the tower.

You’d think Tom being a cat would be family friendly, but he drinks alcohol from a kitty dish. Although the CGI isn’t horrible, it’s obvious when the cat isn’t real. The family includes Lex Luthor, Elektra, Firestorm, and Supergirl, but there’s also Cheryl Hines as condescending ex-wife Madison. Talitha Bateman is her daughter Nicole who doesn’t treat Rebecca any better, but Tom does stand up for his daughter. After an hour of lame cat jokes, the movie tries to be deep. Teddy Sears plays the man that Lara might be cheating with until she realizes she loves her husband. When the company is at risk, it looks like David will commit suicide the same time his family considers pulling the plug on Tom. Falling to his apparent death is the only thing that gets Tom back in his original body. Nine Lives is a surprisingly inappropriate hairball.

Who Let the Dogs Out!

The Shaggy Dog (2006) is an embarrassing remake for all involved, but I do have a soft spot for it. Like so many Disney remakes I grew up with, I had no idea there was so much history behind it. I watched The Shaggy Dog (2006) a few times when I was a kid, but it was never one of my favorites. Director Brian Robbins is usually a bad sign, so I mostly watched it for Tim Allen. The remake combines The Shaggy Dog (1959) with The Shaggy D.A., but Wilby Daniels is no longer the protagonist. Instead Allen plays workaholic aspiring D.A. Dave Douglas who neglects his family like so many movie dads at the time. Though Kristin Davis as wife Rebecca does sell the emotion of her strained marriage. Along with Spencer Breslin who worked with Allen 3 separate times in 2006. This time he’s Dave’s son Josh who would rather audition for a musical than play football.

Zena Grey plays teen activist daughter Carly who goes against her father when he represents the shady Grant and Strickland pharmaceutical corporation. Joshua Leonard plays her teacher accused of firebombing the company for unethical animal testing. The source of the transformation is changed from a magic ring to a far more complicated vaguely scientific source. I’m not sure why, but the breed of dog is changed from an Old English Sheepdog to a Bearded Collie. It only becomes far-fetched when the Tibetan Khyi Yang Po is revealed to be over 300 years old. Philip Baker Hall plays the sickly Dr. Strickland who has the dog stolen to perfect a fountain of youth serum. It leads to a very disturbing group of animals mutated with dog DNA. A trained monkey and chimp are no problem, but the CGI snake with a dog’s tail and bullfrog with a Bulldog head are absolutely ridiculous. I can’t believe Danny Glover agreed to be in the movie, but at least he gets to play a respectable lawyer.

Robert Downey Jr. gives one of his worst performances 2 years before redeeming himself with Iron Man. Dr. Kozak is a smarmy villain who wants to take all the credit for the serum. His scientists lose the dog that ends up with the Douglas family. For once they actually name the dog Shaggy, but he ends up biting Dave. Causing Dave to act like a dog before finally transforming into an identical copy of Shaggy. The remake uses every dog joke you can think of, and they can’t resist using “Who Let the Dogs Out.” Although Allen’s giant CGI dog tongue looks terrible, his full commitment was almost enough to make me laugh. Dave can understand other animals in dog form, but this time he can’t speak to his family. So he learns to listen by finally understanding how they feel. Too bad the mutant animals ruin the drama. Jane Curtin plays the judge who gets frustrated by Dave’s behavior, but the most embarrassing moment comes from Downey Jr. playing fetch in court and growing a tail after Allen bit him. They only use a fully CGI dog at the end when Shaggy surfs. The Shaggy Dog (2006) is worse than I remember, but little kids who love dogs might like it.

Remake of: The Shaggy Dog (1959)

The Dog in Him

The Shaggy Dog (1994) is the first ABC Family Movie remake of a live-action Disney film. Like The Return of the Shaggy Dog, it’s a mostly forgotten TV movie. Although I ended up liking The Shaggy Dog (1994) more than I thought I would. It’s a 90’s remake of the original film that makes changes that actually made sense. It was directed by Dennis Dugan and has a surprisingly good cast. Aladdin himself Scott Weinger plays Wilby Daniels who transforms into a Sheepdog (I guess we can finally call him Laddie). Wilby’s love for invention is more consistent with him developing a grass powered car that he’s too chicken to drive. Ed Begley Jr. plays his allergic father Ron who has a less hostile attitude towards dogs. The child actor playing Moochie isn’t the greatest, but he does really want a dog like the original.

Even though they have a cat for some reason. Sharon Lawrence plays their mother Monica who doesn’t immediately shoo the neighbor dog away. Bundles is a Sheepdog owned by Charlie Mulvihill played by James Cromwell one year before Babe. Charlie seems nice, but he’s an international jewel thief who plots to steal a diamond from Ron’s family owned museum of curiosities. It’s a welcomed change that simplifies the criminal subplot. Wilby finds the Borgia ring at the museum and does his research before transforming. The morphing effects have gotten better and the dog puppet is more convincing than I was expecting. Officers Kelly and Hanson are now dog catchers who try to catch Wilby when he eats at a stereotypical Indian burger joint. Like Lady and the Tramp, Wilby attracts the love of a cute Cocker Spaniel, but his constant dismissal of her is a little too reminiscent of the squirrel from The Sword and the Stone.

Though romance is handled better than the original. Natasha Gregson Wagner plays Allison as the girl next door who always liked Wilby. Even though she goes with the selfish Trey played by professional jerk Jeremy Sisto. The naturally French Sarah Lassez plays Francesca who starts to like Wilby as well. This time their double date is at a movie theater where they watch The Curse of the Werewolf. Charlie being Francesca’s uncle makes it easier for him to betray her trust. Ron goes to the police like the original and Jon Polito plays a detective who blames him for the stolen diamond. Wilby swallows it and breaks the curse by rescuing Francesca. She still moves away, but at least Allison gives him a chance. The Shaggy Dog (1994) managed to get a few things right.

Moochie and his brother Wilby as a Sheepdog

Remake of: The Shaggy Dog (1959)

Wilby’s Wagging Adventure

The Return of the Shaggy Dog kept the franchise going 11 years later on TV. It was a 2 part television film presented as a Disney Sunday Movie. Strangely enough it was written by future Oscar winner Paul Haggis. Although the movie faded into obscurity, The Return of the Shaggy Dog is an interquel set between The Shaggy Dog and The Shaggy D.A. Even though it doesn’t look like it takes place in the 60’s. Wilby Daniels is a young lawyer played by comedian turned politician Gary Kroeger. He doesn’t show his face much since the rules for the magic ring have changed yet again.

This time anyone that reads the inscription will trap Wilby in the body of a Sheepdog until the inscription is read again. The transformation has a TV quality with less men in a dog suit. The ring is taken from the dying Professor Plumcutt by his greedy English servants Myra and Carl. I recognized Jane Carr, but they’re lame villains that happen to inherit Plumcutt’s Sheepdog. Aside from Wilby being a lawyer, the only direct connection to The Shaggy D.A., is fiancΓ© Betty played by Michele Little who feels like a completely different person. Wilby’s transformations complicate their wedding plans, but she never finds out to avoid contradicting the sequel.

Instead Todd Waring plays grown up brother Moochie who finds out when casting a dog for a commercial. Most of the comedy comes from a rather risque misunderstanding when Betty mistakes Wilby being a dog for him cheating. The attractive Cindy Morgan plays producer Laura Wells who keeps dog Wilby until Moochie tries to get him back. The villains try to get money for Wilby, they find an excuse for him to drive, he gets the ring back, and marries Betty who doesn’t ask questions. The Return of the Shaggy Dog is the missing piece of a puzzle that you can take or leave.

A Law Degree and a Pedigree

The Shaggy D.A. is shaggier than most Disney gimmick comedies. Despite the profitable success of The Shaggy Dog that reshaped Disney’s live-action formula, it took 17 years to get a sequel. At least it was the final film directed by Disney legend Robert Stevenson. The Shaggy D.A. now follows an adult Wilby Daniels who grew into Disney mainstay Dean Jones. He’s the one who sings the title song in the traditionally animated opening. Jones is once again paired up with Suzanne Pleshette as independent 70’s wife Betty. Brian is their precocious son who wears a pair of bulky headphones. As the title suggests, Wilby is a lawyer who runs for district attorney when his house gets robbed. Along with John Myhers as their admiral neighbor who doesn’t leave the same impression as the Mary Poppins admiral.

Wilby blames the corrupt current D.A. since this was a post-Watergate film. Frequent Disney villain Keenan Wynn plays the long-winded mustache twirling John Slade connected to criminal Roshak played by Vic Tayback. I can’t imagine kids caring about the political plot, but the dog transformation has gotten a lot sillier. Crooks steal the magic ring that doesn’t follow the rules of the first movie. Now anyone that reads the inscription can transform Wilby into a Sheepdog. The transformations are even more laughable with Jones covered in white fur. Moments where he’s clearly a man in a dog costume are infamous with Wilby punching someone, riding a bike, and roller skating in a roller derby. Elwood is a different Sheepdog owned by ice cream man Tim played by Tim Conway who tries his best.

Though Tim isn’t the funniest when he tries to profit off his talking dog who always transforms back into Elwood. The ring ends up with his girlfriend Katrinka played by Jo Anne Worley which ends in a pie fight. Dick Van Patten plays Slade’s henchman Raymond who hears about the ring from a museum professor played by Hans Conried. He gives the ring to Slade who keeps Wilby in his dog form. Piglet himself John Fiedler plays a dog catcher who takes him to the pound. Unlike the first movie, Wilby can somehow talk to other dogs that are all voiced by black comedian George Kirby. They’re goofier than the dogs from Lady and the Tramp, but they do help out in the end when Wilby records evidence from Slade. The ending skips over the trial since Slade becomes a dog himself. The Shaggy D.A. is a bad dog picture, but it does have fun with its absurd premise.

I Was a Teenage Sheepdog

The Shaggy Dog is a literal shaggy dog story. Although it was a rare black & white film that Walt Disney made for cheap, The Shaggy Dog was Disney’s most profitable film at the time. It was so successful that it shaped Disney’s live-action formula by adding a supernatural twist to an otherwise all-American setting. If a teenage boy transforming into a Sheepdog sounds like a family friendly horror movie, it’s because Disney was inspired by I Was a Teenage Werewolf. The story is loosely based on the 1923 Austrian novel The Hound of Florence by Felix Salten. The same author responsible for Bambi that Disney also gained the rights to. Disney intended The Shaggy Dog to be a TV series, but it became a feature at the last minute filled with Disney legends. Including Paul Frees as the narrator who can be heard after a silly stop-motion animated opening.

The always amusing Fred MacMurray plays suburban father and former mailman Wilson Daniels who really hates dogs. Jean Hagen plays typical housewife Freeda who tries to calm her husband down. After being forced to put down their dog in Old Yeller, Tommy Kirk and the young Kevin Corcoran are once again brothers with a much happier relationship to a dog. Kirk plays shy teenager Wilby Daniels who has a passion for invention. His brother Moochie really wants a dog, but their dad won’t allow it. Wilby has normal teen problems like finding a swell girl to go out with. Tim Considine plays selfish friend Buzz who hogs all the best girls. Mouseketeers star Annette Funicello plays the popular Allison who gets unfairly ignored when the boys spot a new neighbor. Roberta Shore plays Francesca who occasionally speaks French and owns a friendly Sheepdog named Chiffon. The source of Wilby’s transformation is a magical ring belonging to the Borgia family. The whole story is told to Wilby by the eccentric Professor Plumcutt played by Cecil Kellaway. He mentions The Hound of Florence, but the story is a lot darker than his comedic predicament.

The transformation is laughable with Wilby growing white fur and taking the place of Chiffon who disappears. Food was given to the dog to make him talk whenever Wilby speaks, but there are sillier moments with a man in a dog costume. Wilby transforms at unpredictable moments like a local dance with the two girls he likes. Moochie loves having a dog, but his dad nearly shoots him. Wilby takes the opportunity to cozy up to Francesca and chase Buzz away. It seems innocent, but there’s a Cold War spy plot that comes out of nowhere. Alexander Scourby plays Francesca’s adoptive father Dr. Andrassy who plots to steal government secrets that Wilby overhears in dog form. Wilson ends up believing Moochie when he learns about Wilby. They try to convince the clueless police officers as Wilby gives chase while driving as a dog. The curse is lifted when Wilby rescues Francesca, but neither him nor Buzz get the girl in the end. It’s a true shaggy dog story with an anticlimactic ending where Wilson suddenly loves dogs and Chiffon becomes the hero. The Shaggy Dog is a product of the 50’s elevated by Disney’s sense of imagination.

Eve’s Apple

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery restored my faith in the whodunit franchise. Glass Onion proved to be another unexpected mystery, but it felt held back by the Pandemic and streaming release. Although Wake Up Dead Man fulfills director Rian Johnson’s contract with Netflix, it’s a more emotionally mature film without losing its sense of humor. At this point I expected each installment to bother me for whatever reason, but this time my grievances aren’t politically charged. The title Wake Up Dean Man is named after a U2 song along with a phrase from the song “Ain’t No More Cane on the Brazos,” but it also refers to a Bible quote. As a Christian, I’ll always be a little skeptical of a Hollywood movie that openly discusses faith in a church setting. Unlike previous Knives Out mysteries, religious deconstruction wasn’t a big theme for 2025 films.

I wasn’t surprised to learn that Johnson based the story on his own religious upbringing in an Evangelical church. The only reason it was changed to a Catholic church is because it’s more aesthetically pleasing. Unfortunately, Johnson applied his own religious skepticism to Detective Benoit Blanc who reveals himself to be a non-believer with an uncomfortable assessment of the church. Daniel Craig tones down his Southern accent and changes his appearance slightly with longer hair and a beard. Although Agatha Christie continued to be the primary inspiration, Edgar Allan Poe and John Dickson Carr were also a point of reference. The Hollow Man was mostly responsible for the idea of an impossible crime or a locked room murder. Blanc may be stubborn in his lack of faith, but Josh O’Connor is the true lead who holds strong to his faith no matter what he uncovers about the church.

Father Jud Duplenticy is a young priest who found God after he killed a man in a boxing match. Although Jeffrey Wright plays a bishop who assigns Jud to a church in upstate New York, there aren’t a bunch of celebrity cameos like in Glass Onion. Aside from another voice role for Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Noah Segan as a bar owner. The actual ensemble cast has even more MCU actors than before. Josh Brolin plays Monsignor Jefferson Wicks who preaches angry sermons and refuses to give up his church to Jud. Wicks is haunted by the memory of his mother Grace played by Annie Hamilton who was dubbed the “Harlot Whore” after she desecrated the church. James Faulkner plays Wick’s grandfather and church founder Prentice who mentioned Eve’s Apple before his death. An event that was witnessed by the devout church member Martha Delacroix played by a dedicated Glenn Close.

Thomas Haden Church is on the outside as groundskeeper Samson Holt who has a relationship with Martha. The rest of Wick’s flock are deeply loyal to his church despite their problems. In the first major role since his near-fatal accident, Jeremy Renner plays Dr. Nat Sharp who struggles with drinking after his wife left him. Andrew Scott plays sci-fi author Lee Ross who struggles to write a new best-seller. Cailee Spaeny plays cellist Simone Vivane who struggles to walk again and seeks a miracle. Kerry Washington plays lawyer Vera Draven who struggles to raise an illegitimate child at the behest of her father. The child grew up to be Cy Draven played by Daryl McCormack. Cy being a conservative influencer is the only time the movie feels PC. The only outlier is Mila Kunis in the unlikely role of serious police chief Geraldine Scott.

SPOILER ALERT! This time Wicks is the murder victim in a closed room witnessed by the congregation. He was killed by a devil knife that makes Jud seem like a suspect. Everyone in the church has a motive, but Jud starts to realize that Jesus is more important after he prays for construction employee Louise played by Bridget Everett. The focus on Holy Week becomes important when Wicks seems to miraculously rise from his tomb. Though it’s all an elaborate set up that I couldn’t figure out. Hawkeye, Sandman, and Nova Prime are all responsible for the death of Thanos. Eve’s Apple is revealed to be a priceless diamond that led others down a path of greed. Blanc almost wavers when he realizes the importance of grace when he allows the killer to confess their sins. They go their separate ways with the diamond kept where it needed to be. Wake Up Dead Man keeps the mystery alive and well.

I Want the Truth

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is a clear-cut direction for the whodunit franchise. Knives Out was an original film that proved to be a major financial success for director Rian Johnson. So it only made sense to dump the sequels on streaming. The Pandemic was partly to blame since Netflix swooped in with an unprecedented $469 million deal for 2 Knives Out sequels in 2021. Johnson wrote the script for Glass Onion in 2020, and was unfortunately inspired by the ongoing Pandemic. I didn’t care for the dated politics in Knives Out, so I knew I’d be annoyed by all the masks and “social distancing.” Which is why I didn’t watch Glass Onion for years, but luckily I avoided the twists. This time Johnson was inspired by Agatha Christie’s vacation mysteries. Like Hercule Poirot, Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc is the only connecting factor in a completely different mystery.

Similar to Knives Out, the bizarre title Glass Onion was taken from a Beatles song. Though other Beatles songs are referenced, the soundtrack has more variety to it. Glass Onion is both a metaphor for something hidden in plain sight and a literal glass mansion shaped like a giant onion. The Glass Onion belongs to a tech billionaire who invites his wealthy friends to an isolated Greek island for a murder mystery party. This time Edward Norton is Miles Bron, the younger obnoxiously rich owner of Alpha who has a glass sculptor collection and the actual Mona Lisa painting. Glass Onion belongs to the multitude of 2022 movies about taking down the rich. It only felt PC in the beginning when the ensemble cast of Disruptors are introduced. Kathryn Hahn is the underhanded governor of Connecticut Claire Debella. Dallas Roberts plays her husband Devon who doesn’t get to go on the trip.

Leslie Odom Jr. is the concerned Alpha scientist Lionel Toussaint. Kate Hudson is the biggest scene stealer Birdie Jay even though she’s a ditzy politically incorrect model turned fashion designer. Jessica Henwick is her assistant Peg who constantly puts out her fires. Dave Bautista proves himself outside of the MCU as Duke Cody, but a men’s rights Twitch streamer is a cringy profession. Especially when Jackie Hoffman plays his mother who knows more than him. Madelyn Cline is Duke’s sexy bikini-clad girlfriend Whiskey who knows more than she lets on. They’re an odd bunch, but they manage to be funny when helping each other solve a puzzle box filled with games. The only outlier is Janelle MonΓ‘e as former Alpha co-founder Andi Brand who was forced out of the company by Miles. She still receives an invitation to the island alongside Benoit Blanc who was secretly hired once again.

Craig maintains his Southern accent, but we also learn more about Blanc’s personal life and eccentricities. Hugh Grant has a cameo as Blanc’s partner who seems to confirm that he’s gay. This time there are several throwaway celebrity cameos that can feel random. Aside from another voice cameo from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, there’s Ethan Hawke, Natasha Lyonne, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Yo-Yo Ma, Jake Tapper, and Serena Williams. It ended up being Angela Lansbury and Stephen Sondheim’s final film role on a Zoom call. Jared Leto and Jeremy Renner are only referenced with a brand of kombucha and hot sauce that Miles owns. Noah Sagan is another returning actor, but he plays slacker Derol who humorously crashes on the island. Like Knives Out, everyone has a motive when Andi exposes their unhealthy devotion to Miles.

Although you’d expect the murder mystery game to last the entire movie, Blanc solves it immediately. SPOILER ALERT! The actual mystery is who poisoned Duke when he falls over dead and who used his gun to shoot Andi. An even longer flashback has the unexpected reveal of Andi being her Southern twin sister Helen in disguise. Helen hired Blanc and they devised a meticulous scheme to expose the one responsible for Andi’s actual death that hasn’t been reported. Seeing everything from the newfound perspective is satisfying, but the ending meanders a bit when an important piece of evidence is destroyed. This time Bruce Banner is the obvious murderer and Helen responds by breaking his glass collection and blowing everything up with an unstable energy source called Klear. Glass Onion may lack the wow factor of Knives Out, but its subversion works just as well the second time.

I Suspect Foul Play

Knives Out brought the whodunit mystery into the 21st century. Although I grew to dislike director Rian Johnson after he ruined Star Wars: The Last Jedi, I have to respect him for helping to revive an old fashioned genre. Johnson was inspired by Agatha Christie adaptations and conceived an original mystery film as far back as 2005. Even though Knives Out belongs to the multitude of 2019 movies about class struggle. I feared Knives Out would be too PC, and I wasn’t entirely wrong. Johnson wrote the script after the backlash that The Last Jedi received from fans. Although I didn’t care for the dated politics, neither party is spared in its humorous critique. Unlike The Last Jedi, I welcomed the subversion of the traditional whodunit formula. The British Daniel Craig became a modern icon when he cleared his Bond schedule to play eccentric Southern Detective Benoit Blanc.

Johnson made sure to differentiate Blanc from other detectives like Hercule Poirot. Blanc is slowly introduced in the background as the police investigate a high profile murder. LaKeith Stanfield is the normal Detective Lieutenant Elliot and Noah Segan is Trooper Wagner who knows a lot about the deceased. In one of his final film roles, Christopher Plummer played the wealthy mystery novel writer Harlan Thrombey who was found dead from an apparent suicide. The orchestral score sets the mood and the large fall estate proves to be a perfect location for a suspected murder. Although the title came from a Radiohead song, it ended up being symbolic of the response to Harlan’s death and literal with a throne surrounded by knives. The ensemble cast was the biggest selling point for me. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Harlan’s oldest daughter Linda as a defensive matriarch with short white hair and round glasses.

Don Johnson plays her husband Richard Drysdale who doesn’t avoid confrontation. Despite wanting to take a hiatus after the MCU, Chris Evans accepted the role of their selfish absentee son Hugh who goes by Ransom. Toni Collette intentionally put on an obnoxious valley girl accent as Joni who married into the family and remained close after her husband died. 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford plays her liberal college student daughter Meg who hates her far-right cousin Jacob played by Jaeden Martell. An online troll is a not at all subtle jab at critics of The Last Jedi. Though his father Walt doesn’t seem to share his views, Michael Shannon is more unassuming with a cane to walk with. Riki Lindhome plays his wife Donna who doesn’t get enough attention to know her stance. K Callan is Harlan’s very old mother Great Nana Thrombey who seems too confused to know anything. There’s also Edi Patterson as the housekeeper Fran who loves Hallmark mysteries.

Blanc suspects foul play when all family members are revealed to have strong motives. The death occurred after Harlan’s birthday party where he intended to cut off his greedy family. The true lead is rising star Ana de Armas as Harlan’s Hispanic nurse and personal friend Marta Cabrera. They make sure you know her mother played by Marlene Forte is an undocumented immigrant. Despite most of the family being liberal and Meg being a friend of Marta, they’re often condescending when they offer to take care of her. Although you’d expect a twist to be revealed at the end, we learn the exact cause of death in the first act. SPOILER ALERT! Marta accidentally gave Harlan a lethal dose of morphine and he carried out his own death to protect her. They orchestrate a complex alibi that leaves clues for the suspicious Blanc.

M. Emmet Walsh briefly plays their security guard with video proof that she erases. Looper collaborator Joseph Gordon-Levitt can also be heard in a voice cameo as a detective. Marta’s only struggle is being unable to lie due to the rather disgusting response of her throwing up. Omitting incriminating details save her, but problems arise when Harlan’s counsel played by Frank Oz reads the will naming Marta the sole owner of his entire fortune. The knives truly come out when the Thrombey family shows their true colors. Ransom is her unlikely ally who forces her to reveal the truth and agrees to help for a cut of the fortune. Blanc proves himself when he reveals the actual twist that Ransom is secretly behind everything. Since no one would’ve expected Captain America. Despite her morals, Marta ends up looking down at the family in the end. Knives Out is a mystery worth watching.
