- Simplifying MARC generation of the Homosaurus vocabulary September 15, 2023Some time ago, I put together a proof of concept that that outlined a method that could be utilized to convert the JSON-LD data made available as part of the Homosaurus vocabulary to MARC for use in MARC-centric systems. The original post can be found here: https://blog.reeset.net/archives/2953 In the time since that post, the vocabulary […]reeset

Windows 7.7 Installation Options
MarcEdit 7.7.x Download Options
MarcEdit 7.7 has three distinct download options to ensure that users have the options necessary to work within their specific and unique local environments. Please review the options below and select the option that makes the most sense for you and your environment.
Please note, while both of these installation files can be installed by users (without administrative permissions); only the User Only (Self Contained) installation utilizes the new .NET option to precompile and freeze and application to a specific .NET build, allowing all dependencies and system files to be included in the installation. Users installing the Consolidated Installer will need to either install the following dependencies prior to installation or provide an administrative password to install the necessary .NET 8.0 Desktop Runtime files if they are not present. Specifically, the following dependencies will be installed when using the Consolidated Installer:
- .NET 8.0.x Desktop Runtime (64 Bit)
- .NET 8.0.x Desktop Runtime (32 Bit)
- Microsoft WebKit Runtime
These runtimes enable the application to run on either 64 or 32 bit systems, as well as allow other 32 or 64 bit applications to interact with MarcEdit’s programming components. The dependencies can be installed prior to installing MarcEdit 7.7 from the Microsoft website: Download .NET 8.0 (Linux, macOS, and Windows) (microsoft.com)
System Administrators: Please note, both of these updates have their own individual program and upgrade ids. This means that these versions technical could be installed on the same machine; but it is not recommended. For organizations wanting to manage the installation via a package management tool, please see: Managing MarcEdit Installations for information related to best practices and access to a native 64-bit installer.
User Only Installation (Self Contained)Download MarcEdit 7.7 (All Users)
Installation Demonstration: You should download this version if:
Please note, this version of MarcEdit comes with a couple trade-offs. Specifically:
This is the recommended version of MarcEdit for users that either work in managed environments and are unable to get their IT departments to install the application or its dependencies or are utilizing the application on their own personal devices and don’t require access to MarcEdit’s programming components to support 3rd-party applications. Download MarcEdit 7.7 (All Users)

Consolidated InstallationDownload MarcEdit 7.7 (Consolidated Build)
Installation Demonstration: You should download this version if:
The Consolidated Installation is the most complete installation package, but also requires the installation of dependency files that may require administrative permissions to complete (see above). Once those dependencies have been installed, the program will:
Please note: The Consolidated build is the only version of the application that current supports 32-bit systems. This is the recommended version of MarcEdit for systems where you will have more that one user signing in and utilizing the application, for users on 32-bit systems, for organizations wanting to manage the application installation via SCCM or other package manager, or for users that require the use of MarcEdit’s COM programming library to support local script development or 3rd-party tools utilizing the MarcEdit COM library.

Running MarcEdit on a Mac
To provide parallel functionality between Mac and Windows systems, MarcEdit 7.7 has been released as a Mac pkg utilizing Wine. This means that in order to utilize the program, you need to install wine via homebrew (version 9.25+) and then install the MarcEdit 7.7 package.
How to install Wine via HomeBrew:
- Ensure you have homebrew installed: Installation — Homebrew Documentation
- Update and upgrade packages
brew outdated
brew upgrade - Install wine — as of the time of this writing cask wine@devel or cask wine@staging are the versions that will install wine 9.25. I prefer wine@devel. This is what is being used for testing. However, this will also install a couple dependences specifically to support X11 coding. If installing using that method is problematic — you can use staging. Please not, these do assume you have admin rights on your device.
(preferred) brew install --cask --no-quarantine wine@devel or brew install --cask --no-quarantine wine@staging
- This will put an icon with the name — Wine@devel in the launch pad. Please run it once to prep the environment. Otherwise, it will happen the first time MarcEdit is run.
The installation process has been documented here:
If for some reason you still need access to the older version of the application, you can download version 3.5 at the following URL:
https://marcedit.reeset.net/software/marcedit75/MarcEdit3_5.pkg.zip
Linux Download
The MarcEdit 7 Linux downloader is a self-contained installer utilizing the makeself command. When installing the Linux version of MarcEdit 7, the installer will extract the program into the same directory that you run the installer. Following extraction, the tool will run a script that will create a shortcut on your linux desktop that can then be used to run MarcEdit. If you want to specify a particular target directory, use the -target option when running marcedit7.run. For example:
>marcedit7.run –target ~/Documents/marcedit
System Requirements:
To run MarcEdit 7, you must have a current version of mono installed. Please see: Mono Download for instructions on how to download the mono runtime. Please note, you must install the mono-complete package. Typically, no other requirements are necessary. For more information, please see the following Youtube video

MarcEdit 7 has two 64-bit download options — a version that does not require administrator permissions and one that does require administrator permissions. Functionally, these versions offer the exact same functionality, with the primary difference being that the non-Administrative installation installs into a single user space, and the version that requires Administrator permissions are installed into the Program Files space to enable multiple users to run MarcEdit. Please review the table below to determine which version of MarcEdit you should download.
