WHAT WE DO
If you are a parent whose child just came out, you may be struggling or wondering how to respond. We are mothers who have traveled down this road and want to help you through this crossroads by providing a place for hope, learning, and community. In this time of political unrest, especially surrounding our LGBTQ+ loved ones, it is crucial to understand how to have courageous conversations to foster empathy, advocate for rights, and create inclusive environments for all.

WHY WE EXIST

LGBTQ+ young people who reported living in very accepting communities attempted suicide at less than half the rate of those who reported living in very unaccepting communities.

Without an affirming parent, LGBTQ+ youth are at the highest rate of suicide and can rarely access mental health services including therapy and gender-affirming care.

Mama Dragons is a nonprofit (501c3) organization dedicated to creating LGBTQ+ affirming homes through parent education. Since 2013, Mama Dragons has grown from just a handful of LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) mothers to an organization reaching more than 25,000 parents from various backgrounds.
Mama Dragons provides programs that specifically address the complexities of navigating mental health, non-affirming religions, geographies, and cultures. We focus on parenting the crucial first year after an LGBTQ+ child comes out. Mama Dragons empowers mothers to support, affirm, celebrate, and advocate for their LGBTQ+ children, influencing the family system to follow.​ In these politically charged times, it's more important than ever to know how to have courageous conversations at home, at school, in our communities, and anywhere where laws are being created that affect our families.
