Lets see now... - Stopped working at Immersive Technologies. It was my first job out of uni and was good in lots of ways, but the 30% pay rise amongst other things convinced me it was time to move on.
- Started working for PIVoD Technologies.
- Went on a hastily organised (read 27th of december) trip to Fiji. Flew out New Year's Eve and spent 10 days at Mango Bay resort doing very little. Met some great people (Aussies and locals), fantastic time.
- Made redundant by PIVoD Technologies. Their new US-based CEO decided to move the company to the US and outsource to India. As I had been there under 12 months I joined the initial wave off lay-offs. No big stress in the current job market.
- Had a couple of months off not doing very much because I could.
- Spent a month job-hunting, interviewing etc.
- Started working for Fujitsu. Specifically at the old police HQ in the city.
- Waved goodbye to my parents who have moved to Russia for work.
- The Police role wasn't everything I thought I signed up for, so asked to be moved shortly before the end of my probation. Fuj were receptive to that and I've been working at the Department of Treasury and Finance as part of a 3 man team ever since. The work is web stuff which I haven't done before. So its interesting from a newness perspective, I'd suggest it'd be pretty average interest wise if that wasn't the case
In amongst that... God Stuff
- Church hasn't been the greatest for a while now. Head pastor moved on after 12 years at CBC and things have been a bit unsettled ever since.
- To be fair I'd been a bit unsettled for a while, so its as much me as anything
- We've started looking around for another church
- Been a bit distant recently. Not enjoying that, should stop being slack and do something about it.
- Started a home group with some old friends recently which should be good.
Basketball - Thoroughly enjoyed playing a slightly higher grade than I had for a while last winter. The team wasn't overly successful, but we were close almost every game and it was good to be stretched a bit.
- Coach the UCC basketball team when my game is close to theirs. They run themselves these days, but still claim to appreciate my input.
- Playing D grade over summer (that's a grade lower than the UCC guys) with some guys I played with the winter before last. We should totally be playing a higher grade.
Gaming Stuff
- Spent a lot of time playing the fan made mod "Fall from Heaven 2" for Civilisation IV. Civ IV in a faantasy setting with magic etc. Incredibly well done and sooo much better than the original game (which I also loved)
- Recently bought Hellgate London
- I'd be happier if I could connect to the same server as everyone else I know
- Still playing various online sports management games.
Wow is that dry reading. Do I look like an engineer type or what with all those bullet points? |
|
Was doing some random reading online and came to the Wikipedia page on Meta-Ethics (which I will now blatantly steal and post below, with some minor formatting and fluff removal All of which got me thinking a number of things: - I should really do some more reading and possibly study in Philosophy, because I find it quite fascinating.
- By those definitions I'm not sure whether I subscribe to "Ethical Intuitionism" or "Divine Command Theory" or perhaps both, if that's even possible.
- And Inevitably "This is Wikipedia, those definitions are somewhat likely to be wrong/poorly-represented ;P"

It should give you a fair indication of how well my team's basketball season is going that a victory constitutes its own LJ post. Be that as it may, we did get a win.
We were quite happily 3wins - 0losses at the start of the season, but then of course we were put up a grade. Since that time we were 0wins - 5losses. That came to an end today when we played the other Claremont team.
We get the clutch win 45-42 on the back of Mr Leal scoring 5 points in the last 25 seconds including his fifth triple of the game in a defenders face to put us up 43-42. Huge win for us/me for the reasons above as well as:
*Missing probably our 2 best scorers (Watching the Dockers getting thrashed) *One of our forwards being reassigned to Norway on 5 days notice, hence, not at game -->Only 5 players *Despite hitting zero of four threes, still managed 12 points myself. (ten in the second half) on 4 of 4 shooting inside with 2 of 3 free throws. -->I don't make double figures often so pretty happy with that.
Rock on |

I've resigned from my position at Immersive Technologies and it looks like I'll be going to work with wintal again. This is a good thing. I've been cruising for a while and its time to stretch myself again. It also has the added benefit of being very close to where Pam work's, both our families, church etc. That probably means there's a chance we'll be looking for somewhere closer to rent when our lease expires... but who knows? 30% pay-rise doesn't hurt either. |

For posterity as much as anything else here's the current web-games I'm playing:
Simulated Sports College Basketball sports management game that I've been playing for 6 years. Am down to just the one team, having had as many as 4. Fantastic game, that elegantly solves the "people who have been playing longest win" problem inherent in so many online games. I used to be quite dominant, but have settled back into relative mediocrity this past year.
Hattrick Soccer sports management game that I've been playing for 4 of 5 years. I'm pretty much down to maintenance mode here just in case my interest picks up. I've been as high as Div II, am currently in div III. The game itself is quite narrow and suffers from a fluctuating and IMO flawed economy and talent convergence resulting in games becoming a coin-flip at higher levels of the game.
EHockey Ice Hockey sports management game. Have been playing this for 2 years maybe? Basically a hattrick clone. Suffers from regular rule/balance changes. Has few Australian players which has meant that I quickly made it to the highest division where I am a regular top 3 contender.
Sokker Another soccer management game. Most recent game I've picked up, been playing it for about 9 months. Has answers to most of what I think is wrong with Hattrick. Tactics make a real difference, as does being able to watch your guys run around in real time. The only game I've forked out money for this year, although it is free to play, you can't scout your opponents properly unless you are a "supporter".
SimNBA I've stopped actually playing in this one but still hang around the message boards and help with some of the administration side of the game. Basically is a place for players who graduate from SimSports to play NBA using the shareware Fast Break Basketball game engine.
Other web games I've played over the years.
StarExodus - Turns based, space trading game (went pay-to-play) Archmage, Utopia, Earth 2020 - Turns based kingdom management. Omniscience - Gangster sim (no not like Pimp Lords) CoachingSim - Basketball sim No Holds Barred - Fighter management (now defunct) Web Boxing League - Fighter management, very cool, has scripted fight plans etc. World Elite Soccer - Intricately detailed, "abuse the newbies", soccer management.

| » Birthday Update |
This past weekend was one of the better ones I can remember for quite some time.
Friday night I had dinner at Borsalino with 10 friends which was excellent. Great food, great wine, great service and great company.
Saturday was uber-relaxing. Had a slow start to the day by cooking breakfast for a couple of friends who decided that our crashing at our place was better than driving home. Caught up with my dad, which I don't do often enough. Bummed around all afternoon and just to take the level of mental activity down another notch went and saw X-Men III. Brainless entertainment.
Sunday (My Birthday) I was treasured by my wife before going to church, lazing away the afternoon and then seeing Stomp at Burstwood Theatre.
All in all, refreshing, the way weekends are meant to be. I like it.
P.S. apologies for not letting people know I wasn't going to coach Saturday. It completely slipped my mind after I decided I couldn't play myself Saturday morning.

| » First post for the year! |
The first quarter is almost gone, so I'd best show some semblance of life (at least as far as this LJ is concerned).
I continue to be married to the most beautiful firefly21 who still lights up my world. She continues to be incredibly busy with her new job. Just today she was informally (I think it was informally) offered ongoing permanency at her dream job. May all who read this (myself included) be just as blessed at some stage (preferably the near future).
The other cool thing about her being made permanent is that we can start planning our world trip. Rock on! Not sure even generally where we'll be going yet, but we'll probably go for all of Decemeber and January.
As for myself. Well, I'm getting by. Work is up and down. I pretty badly need a change to my job description which I'll be letting my manager know RSN (now that I know we'll be staying in Perth indefinitely). I recently finished a Monday night season of basketball with a good bunch of guys under the team "Muscular Beavers" (Not my choice). They claim the name was to do with the cartoon "Two Angry Beavers", but I still thought it was a poor choice. I've started my winter comp with Claremont on Saturdays. We're playing in C2 at the moment (the second lowest grade) but after out 48-24 win in the first week we're probably in danger of being graded up.
In other news we're probably looking at getting a second car, which would likely mean that we could catch up with people more often.

Cutesy Web Games
Pandas, Ninjas, cute little kids trying to catch the stars, frogs who don't like water, something for everyone, unless you hate cute.
*Thanks to my kind friends who noted my abuse of cut-n-paste to the detriment of others.... link updated.

Anyone would think my life was boring or something. Not true, I'm just married, and still haven't been bothered to get 1) a working computer or 2) net access for our new place. Today is a bit of a slow afternoon work-wise though so here I am updating.
Maelstrm news: *I'm loving being married to firefly21
*I have attended 1, that's ONE, Ceroc dance class -- I shall probably attend more, we'll see
*I am a more capable cook than I was 2 months ago
*Work was really boring, was looking like it might get more interesting -- But there are murmurs of more boring instead. -- If (moreBoring) then (searchForNewJobLikelihood++)
*I start in a monday night basketball league this coming monday -- My team is better than I've played in for a while -- I should probably practice some
*Aren't seeing much of my family -- may have to organise seeing them more
*Aren't seeing much of anybody except firefly21 -- may have to organise seeing them more
*Am still mostly disorganised -- Aha I see a link!
*Still haven't started teaching English to refugee kids -- This is NOT because of lack of organisation on my part.
*Want to do a Magic: The Gathering night some time -- Plan on colour printing a whole heap of cards, since Wizards of the Coast host all the images on line (go figure) -- If playing MtG is of interest to you, let me know. -- More interest might mean me being more organised.
