I grew up on Halloween; candy, decorations, scary movies, and ballerina costumes. There were never many kids in our neighborhood so we always went to a family friend’s house less than a mile away. They had three kids, so the dads would take us trick-or-treating and the moms passed out candy.
That family moved a few hours up north so we started doing Halloween at our house. My best friend lived next door, and we went out together while our moms passed out candy together.
My point with this rambling history lesson is to show that Halloween used to be fun. Kids used to dress up and walk miles for candy. We used to love it. It’s been sad for me over the past few years to see that all change. I don’t bother turning on the light anymore, because the last time I passed out candy, our block looked like the freeway in rush hour due to parents being too lazy to take their kids out in Detroit.
Another history lesson; years ago, Detroit put a 7pm curfew on anyone under 18. This translates to parents being too lazy to walk their kids around, so they drive them to a city with a 10pm curfew so they don’t have to get their lazy selves out of their car.
The age and interest in costumes also changed over the years. The last time we passed out candy, it was to 16-30 year olds in jeans and hoodies. I actually had a girl come up to the door with three bags on her arm and say her brothers and cousin were sick.
I don’t know, I guess I’m just bothered that Halloween isn’t Halloween anymore. Hopefully when I move, things will be better.

How a simple sound, word, scent can trigger such strong, vivid memories. For me it’s a sprinkler at night, crickets, the smell of rain, and two lonely notes on the piano. They take us places we’d give anything to go back to, or sometimes back to places we would rather forget. Such small things can change your mood. They can change everything.
That’s one thing that always got me about songwriting; you can write about those triggers and connect with a world of people who feel the same way you do. I could record this song I’ve been working on for 4 years and find another person who gets lost in a Jane Austen state of mind when their sprinklers switch on in the middle of the night, too. Maybe it would be the very person I was thinking about in the first place.
Our minds store such mass amounts of information. Everytime I think about it, I remember Jonesie’s brain filing system from Dreamcatcher, and the fact that our brains memeorize millions of faces to repeat back to us in dreams. Our brains are better than any electronic device. That’s why the humans end up winning in every Terminator movie.
