I have a better understanding of things when I can use my hands or have many different examples. Thus, I take a holistic approach to my lessons and teach using various media/activities in my classes. I strive to engage all students so they are continually challenged and never bored. Where possible, I love including real-life examples in my lessons for my students. I build “think time” into my classes so that every student has an opportunity to answer. I also love response card options in the classroom. It allows student answers to be anonymous and removes some of the social pressures of having the wrong answer or an answer that is not favourable. I love letting students have a choice in their assignments or project deliverables. By doing this, students have more control over their learning and are more confident in their work. When students are excited about their work and can draw on their strengths, they have the opportunity to do their best work. I strive to include multiple perspectives and diverse examples in my teaching. Wherever possible, I include first people’s perspectives and examples in my classroom and lessons.  Exposing students to a wide range of ideas, experiences, and cultures, investigating and challenging preconceptions, enhances the learning experience.

I stand on honesty and transparency in my everyday life and model this in the classroom. I make no assumptions and get to know my students before even knowing their background or seeing their file. Not doing this can easily lead to biases about students, and I do not want that. Mutual respect and trust are essential. Having a positive classroom culture where everyone feels included, valued, and heard is very important. A classroom should be a safe space where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels included. Different perspectives allow for others to see what they may not already see.

All my students will have equal opportunities and be given any needed guidance or support to succeed in my class. Growing up, I knew what it was like not having much and what it was like to be privileged. Knowing not all students have devices or resources at home, I book computers when needed and allow reasonable class time to complete assignments. Students should have the same educational opportunities no matter their background or differences. My goal is to see growth and success in all my students. Equity is key to making sure all my students learn no matter what.
