random things about me…

1. I firmly believe that you reap what you sow. It’s one of those “universal laws” – you send it out, it will eventually come back to you; good or bad, right or wrong. Don’t know why it happens, it just does.

2. I love love love being a mom. I was 30 when my son was born and 32 when my daughter came along. My children are grown now and they are still the most frustrating, yet most wonderful parts of my life.

3. I’m strive to be a spiritual person, but don’t attend a structured worship service as often as I should. I study and have a daily devotional with a close friend. Maintaining and directing my life and staying on the right ‘path’ is one of the most challenging things I try to do. Just when you think you’ve got it ‘going on’ there is something trying to offer you so much more on the “other”, much easier, path. There are many things I don’t think I could have made it through if not for my faith.

4. I enjoy ‘junking’ and ‘antiquing’ – finding dusty treasures that I can fix up or turn into something else.

5. When I tour places like the Biltmore House or the houses in downtown Charleston, I always want to go in the rooms that are sealed off or locked. There are probably wonderful things in those rooms!

6. You will hardly ever see me without my camerawhen there’s nothing to take pictures of, I take pictures of nothing! :)

7. I love love love my nieces. They are amazing, unique, and brilliant girls. I wish we all lived closer and I could see them more often. One is a student at Clemson University and the other attends the University of South Carolina’s Honor College.

8. I love going to live performances!! Not just music, but theater as well. When I was 12 or so I wanted to go see The Monkees and my parents wouldn’t let me. I made a vow then that I would “let” my children go see their favorite artists perform whenever they wanted. Ha, not only do I “let” them and usually finance it, I sometimes drag them to shows. While my son enjoys live music, he doesn’t have the passion for it my daughter has. She loves it as much as I do – just about all genres, all artists, and all generations. SHE even dragged me with her to go to see KC & The Sunshine Band and The Village People. It isn’t about music of a certain generation or genre, but about the music, the sounds, the vibe, the feeling of the floor vibrating to the drum beat or a strong bass riff. How wonderful it is to share a love of something like music. I have a close friend who is my “broadway buddy.” There is just something about someone being on stage that is so much more than screen or TV can offer.

I LOVE live shows!

9. I enjoy road trips to go to concerts or to amusement parks – my two favorite things to do! I don’t mind driving hours and hours if there is a great show or an amazing rollercoaster at the end! Fortunately my daughter loves both of these things too… so we’ve had some fun road trips! :D

ROLLERCOASTER 🙂

10. I love to paint! Walls and Canvases, whatever! – My son never was too excited about changing his room much, but my daughter’s room has been blue feather dusted with white (when she was young and frilly), bright yellow accent walls with peace symbols (for her 60’s phase complete with a lava lamp and tie dyed accessories), huge dark blue drips of paint onto a stark white wall (sounds weird, but looked pretty cool), pink and lime green with a palmetto tree painted on the pink wall (teenage girl colors), and now black and white with a few red accents (the palmetto tree is still there). I always figure if it’s awful, we’ll paint over it. She’s moved out now and we’ve repainted most of her room – except for the one black accent wall with a white South Carolina palmetto tree. We recently sold this house and will be building another soon, but this black wall stayed 🙂

The infamous Palmetto Moon on the wall – it used to be a pink wall; now it’s black…

11. I’ve had just about every normal hair color there is (including a few not so normal colors). I was born a brunette, but it’s been blonde, red, auburn, black, (and greenish and orangeish) …and now it’s gray. Hair color is another one of those things that if it’s awful, I’ll change it. From my mid-20’s until early 40’s my hair was really long – at least to my waist.

12. I took ballroom dancing in my early 20’s and LOVED it. I’d like to do that again.

13. My mother used to get lost when we would go anywhere new in the car, but she always told me we were on a “scenic tour”. We found a lot of great places on those scenic tours.

14. I have one sister who is 11 years younger than I am. Because I left home my senior year of high school and because of our age difference, we weren’t so close growing up, but now I feel like I could go to her with ANYTHING, I seek her advice, and trust her with my life.

15. I had another sister who passed away when she was 3 and I was 10. I had chicken pox, she caught them from me, and then died from the secondary infection of Reyes Syndrome. I know it wasn’t my “fault”, but it was a really tough time. It has definitely affected my life, my relationships – everything. When my children came down with chicken pox (before the vaccine came out), I don’t think I breathed easily until every last spot was gone.

16. If (I mean When) I win the lottery, I’d like to get a huge piece of property and have the entire family within a few “acres” of each other; close, but not TOO close. It would be really nice if  that property was on deep water too! :)

17. I am way too structured. I like to have a plan and will momentarily panic when things don’t go according to “plan”. Once I get a new plan worked out in my head, then I’m okay again… BUT, I also like to do things spur of the moment too, so maybe my “plan” doesn’t have to go too far in the future. :)

18. I love to travel. I’ve been across the entire southern part of the country from east to west and back again; and up both coasts from north to south but haven’t hit much of the middle yet – some, but not the “heartland”. I’ve also been to four countries in Europe, to Canada, to Bermuda, and to Mexico and would love to visit and photograph more. My son spent a summer in Hawaii – major JEALOUS!! I’ve been on cruises to the Bahamas and to Mexico, but I still need to see a lot of that “heartland” that I keep missing. :)

19. I love animals, all kinds of furry creatures (and some not so furry ones too). I would take in every stray if I could…  (maybe When I win the lottery, I’ll have enough running room…)

20. My family is all originally from Mt. Pleasant, SC but I spent most of my “formative” years in Ft. Worth, Texas. Also did a few years in Georgia and North Carolina. After living on the Isle of Palms for a few years, I somehow ended up back in Mt. Pleasant, not sure how, but it’s a great place to live (and ten minutes to the beach!!). We will soon be moving about 15 minutes further north, to Awendaw, SC. I firmly believe that I could live happily anywhere.

21. I was 5 when we moved to Texas, my father wanted to make sure we did the “Texas thing” (thang?), so every Sunday after church we had a tradition of going horseback riding. I have wonderful memories of those times… and I’m a pretty good horseman too 🙂

22. I play the piano, played the violin, and tinkered around with the guitar for a few years. I only play for myself though – sometimes for my sanity – but never for others. When I was growing up, my mother told me she could always tell what kind of mood I was in by the way I played the piano.

23. I love to read, but I read as an escape so only fiction please! I like “real” books too. I keep a few on my phone for times when I don’t have a book handy, but I really love the feel and smell of REAL books.

24. I really enjoy movies. If I love a movie I can watch it over and over and over. But no scary movies please!! I don’t want scary things coming out of dark corners, out of my TV or computer, out of a seemingly beautiful lake or ocean, or peering at me through a darkened window. Okay? Thanks!

25. Turning 40 didn’t bother me in the least, but turning 50 was a dark day :( I didn’t like it at all! Now that 60 is within spitting distance, I’m thinking 50 wasn’t such a bad thing afterall…

  1. My sister is also 11 years older – and I actually really like 54 if that’s any consolation! 😉 Love your description of yourself! How fun!

I just read this and am amazed at how much we have in common. I turned fifty last November and really didn’t mind until later. 25 and 35 were the worst, I cried all day at both. 40 was an eye opener, but nothing I couldn’t handle. Just before I turned fifty, I had a young accountant (maybe 35) tell me that, “You probably feel that way because of your age.” I was shocked. I wasn’t insulted, it just never occurred to me that “anything” was a result of “My AGE!”
