About me and this site
Larry W. Hurtado, PhD, FRSE
This blog site is a space where I offer comments, analysis, and something of my own contributions to the study of earliest Christianity. I’ll interact with the treatment of early Christianity in the work of other scholars, and also in the popular media when appropriate.
I’m a scholar of the New Testament and Christian origins, with posts in higher education since 1975. In August 2011, I retired from my post as Professor of New Testament Language, Literature & Theology (University of Edinburgh) in which I served from 1996. Prior to that, I was in the Department of Religion, University of Manitoba (Winnipeg). My own research over the decades has focused mainly on the origins and development of “devotion to Jesus” in earliest Christianity, and also on textual criticism and the study of earliest Christian manuscripts as informative artefacts of ancient Christianity.
In retirement, I reside in Edinburgh, and continue to pursue my research interests in the area of New Testament & Christian Origins. For more about my own work, consult my University staff page here.
Ground-rules for comments:
1) Identify yourself. You know who I am, so observe social decorum and use your real name.
2) Speak to the subject of the blog-posting. Don’t introduce extraneous issues.
3) Relevant queries and informed comments welcome, but this isn’t a soap-box for people who simply want to vent their pet views or who seek simply to be obnoxious. Trolls go elsewhere!
4) Be concise. State your query or make your comment with regard for readers.
5) Avoid insults and slurs, and focus on engagement with the issues and data. Refutation, declaring an error, all welcome and appropriate, but keep it polite and fair.
