Creative Photography Assignment 5

have spent several semesters in the photography program at the University of Central Missouri seemingly doing the same thing over and over. This semester I have been completely swamped with having to produce assignments without really feeling like I have done anything to further my own creativity. To be honest…I found myself in a rut and know that because of this my creativity has suffered severely. I had talked about a self assignment of alphabet soup to go along with my first assignment and decided to do it again. For this take on the shoot I went to Sedalia Missouri and photographed downtown. Unfortunately I was unable to find all of the letters but they have been filled in. I also brought the images into Photoshop and added filters to the images to give them a little more of a pop. Irving Penn

Irving Penn was born June 16, 1917 and is known for his portraiture and fashion photographer. He began as a painter and also did drawings which were published by Harper’s Bazaar. As his career in photography was blossoming, he became known for his post World War II feminine chic and glamour photography. For many years, Penn’s fashion photography appeared in Vogue magazine. His work was among the first to be photographed against a simple grey or white backdrop. He used the simplicity of this better and more effectively than other photographers. Penn was a master of the studio flash but most of his portraits were lighted with window light. Penn’s work can be characterized by it’s clarity, composition, careful arrangement of objects or people, form, and his use of light. Besides people, Penn also had a body of work based on still life objects where he set up unusual arrangements which displayed great detail and clarity. The images I chose to show on this blog are all of a similar color palet and I simply found interresting. The top image of the doll covered in paint which was simply titled “Mud,” I found interresting because I have never thought to photograph a doll body as if it were a human body. I would like to conduct further research to see if other photographers have taken this route before in their careers.

Horst P. Horst

Horst P. Horst who simply went by Horst was born August 14, 1906. He was best known for his photographs of women and fashion work done for Vogue. He became associated with the magazine in November of 1931 when his first photograph was published in the French edition. Horst rented as apartment in New York in 1937 and while there met Coco Chanel Chanel and began to photograph her fashions. This lasted for three decades. In 1940, Horst applied for United States citizenship and in 1942 passed an Army physical and joined on July 2, 1943. While Horst is best known for his photographs of women and fashion, he is also recognized for his photographs of interior architecture, still lifes, and environmental portraits. In the mid 1970’s he began working for House & Garden as well as Vogue. The four images I posted were chosen because I felt two had a dramatic feel but still contained a look of simplicity while the other two were both quirky and bazaar. The image with the women surrounding the table with the magnifying glass on the very tiny man reminds me of little children, mainly little boys, attempting to burn a bug on a hot summer day.

Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon was born May 15, 1923. He began his career in photography in 1942 when he photographed identification pictures of crewmen for the Merchant Marines. In 1944 Avedon began working as an advertising photographer for a department store. His work was seen by the art director for Harper’s Bazaar and in 1946, Avedon set up his own studio and began shooting images for Vogue and Life as well. Soon he became the chief photographer for Harper’s Bazaar. His style was unique in that he did not conform to the normal techniques of fashion photography. Instead of photographs where models stood still and seemed uninterested in the camera, Avedon preferred to shoot models full of emotion who were smiling, laughing, and most often in action. In 1966 Avedon left Harper’s Bazaar and began working as a staff photographer for Vogue. Along with fashion photography, Avedon began to photograph patients of mental hospitals, the Civil Rights Movement in 1963, protesters of the Vietnam War, and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Besides his style to define him, he was also distinguished by his large prints which sometimes measured over three feet in height. The images I chose to show of Avedon had a somewhat risky feel. The second image with the very toned black man holding the red handbag and high heel which had been strategically placed was one that caught my eye and had a sexy yet comedic value.

Creative Photography Assignment 4

With Assignment Four for Creative Photography, I decided to pick a theme to photograph. My goal was to show personality and difference while sticking with a main idea. My brainstorming lead me to the thought of photographing front porches. While driving around and choosing the porches to photograph I was looking for a few characteristics; unique decorations, different color pallet choices, and simple oddities were the three things I found myself attracted to. I have four images displayed on this blog but there is a link to a Flickr slide show of all forty-something front porches I selected from Warrensburg to photograph. Most of which came from the west side of town. Enjoy!
