Knitting Photo Update

The latest projects off the needles:

Branching Out

This scarf is knit with size 8 needles and Alpaca With A Twist's Baby Twist in black. It was a fun knit. I enjoyed seeing the pattern emerge. The scarf is very soft. This is the leftover yarn from my Leaf Lace Shawl. I did run out of yarn after 25 repeats. The pattern called for more repeats. The finished size is approximately 8" X 57". I think that it is long enough for a dressy scarf. There are 2608 projects on Ravelry with another 2297 queued.

Everlasting Bagstopper

This cotton market bag was knit with size 6 and size 10 1/2 needles. The yarn is Peaches & Creme in white. I modified the handles using SallyC's Everlasting Bagstopper Variation 2. The handles were too long and I tied them in a bow. IMHO, the bag looks cute with the bow. Before its first trip to the grocery, the bag is a crisp, fresh white. I plan eventually to knit a set of 3 or 4 bags. This will be a long term carry-around project. Currently, there are 1042 Everlasting Bagstopper projects on Ravelry and another 1638 are queued.

I seem to be late to the party for both these projects. Better late than never. Looks like I need to review the other popular projects to see what else I have missed. I do plan to knit a Swallowtail Shawl. That has 2259 projects and another 2374 in the queue. Sounds like it is time for me to start a Swallowtail. ;)

Luscious

Luscious is the best word to describe my Meandering Vines Shawl. The color is delicate, the pattern is very clever, and the yarn is so very soft. It was a wonderful tactile experience. I loved the feel of the yarn as it passed through my hands. I love the look and the feel of the finished shawl. It has lovely drape. As you can see, I can't say enough wonderful things about my MV. The designer is an artist by calling and has an art history education. She certainly has an eye for lovely aesthetics and the ability to translate that into an easy, but very effective knitting pattern.

I had 4 skeins of KP's Alpaca Cloud in Peppermint Heather yarn in my stash. I was very reluctant to knit with it because it seemed so fine. The Meandering Vines Shawl called for 4 skeins of this yarn. The pattern states to knit with it doubled. Perfect!

This is a great pattern. Knitters, you should seriously think about knitting this shawl. Seriously!

Arizona Rocks!

DH and I had a wonderful time in Phoenix. It started off rocky. Sunny Arizona? The first 3 days were rainy, cloudy, humid. The dew points were just like home. Monsoon Season!

After the rains departed, Arizona was great! I thought that it was gorgeous. I loved the hot weather. We spent most of our time sightseeing or at the pool. Just perfect pool weather! We drove to Sedona for one day. It was really spectacular.

My post wouldn't be complete without knitting related content. ;) Sedona had a yarn shop. It was right on the main road! It was open! No purchases, no souvenirs, but it is always fun to see yarn shops. I got my fix and off we drove to Oak Creek Canyon before returning to Phoenix.

How about venomous?

Since we never came face to face with a scorpion or rattle snake, I can say that I loved Phoenix. If I had run into one of the venomous snakes or insects, I'm not sure.....

Meandering About

This is the very beginning of the Meandering Vines Shawl . You have to belong to Ravelry to get this pattern. A wonderful knitter from Germany designed this shawl. She has graciously shared her lovely pattern as a free download on Ravelry . This alone should be enough encouragement for any knitters that haven't already joined Ravelry to finally join in on the fun. Who knows what else you may be missing? Here is the broken record - Ravelry is such an amazing site for knitters and crocheters. The waiting list to join Ravelry takes only a few days. What more can I say to encourage knitters to join? Nearly 150,000 knitters and crocheters can't be wrong.

Here is more detail about the Meandering Vines Shawl. The yarn is KnitPicks Alpaca Cloud in the Peppermint Heather colorway. The yarn is doubled throughout the pattern. I had this yarn in my stash. I had 4 skeins - just what the Meandering Vines pattern required. I wasn't looking forward to knitting with it. I was so wrong!!! This baby alpaca is so soft and knitting with it is an amazing pleasure. I did the cast on with size 9 needles and immediately changed to size 8 needles for the body of the shawl. The finished size is supposed to be an ample 23" X 87". Since I am using smaller needles, even if it is smaller, the shawl should still be large enough. I am really enjoying this project. It is easy enough to use it as a carry-around project. The yarn feels fabulous. The finished shawl will be lovely. The designer's shawl is gorgeous!

Block, Blog, & Box

DH tells me that I block, blog and box my finished projects. I occasionally use some of my finished items. This bright and cheerful shawl was knit to wear with a hot pink sundress. We'll see if that actually happens.

This is the blocked and un-boxed Tuscany Shawl (scroll down for the Tuscany shawl photos) from No Sheep For You. The yarn is Silky Wool by Elsebeth Lavold . The shawl used just under four skeins (768 yards). The majority of the shawl was knit with size 6 needles. For the last several rows and the bind-off, I used size 7 needles. The finished shawl is approximately 80" by 28". Just looking at the beautiful hot pink color makes me happy. It was a fun knit. I was surprised how much the yarn grew with blocking. After pinning the dry shawl, I sprayed it with water. After that, I decided to steam the shawl. This yarn did not require serious blocking. In fact, gentle shaping is best. I had heard that Silky Wool can be fragile, so I handled the shawl gently. The shawl softened with blocking. It will have a nice drape. Off to SnB! Two finished projects in two weeks - time to start more projects!

Who Doesn't Love Pi?

Here is the completed and blocked Pi Shawl. The shawl was truly enjoyable to knit. One of the best parts was knitting an Elizabeth Zimmermann pattern while watching the Elizabeth Zimmermann Workshop videos. I highly recommend watching her videos. The video had many wonderful tips, techniques, ideas, etc. The videos are a great complement to the Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitting Workshop book. I really got a kick out of knitting along with the video. It was especially fun when she was discussing the Pi Shawl and I was actively knitting the project during that lesson. As I watched, I felt it connected to other knitters - current and past.

The finished shawl is about 72" in diameter. The shawl was very fun and relaxing. I loved the hours and hours of just comforting knitting. The border was also pleasurable. The border took about 60% of the total yarn. I would definitely knit this again. If I do knit it again, I would probably knit it in laceweight. The sportweight is lovely, but laceweight would give it a different look. There are so many intricate and lacy versions. They are many gorgeous versions. I really liked the simple look with the dramatic border. As I had mentioned in an earlier post, Kelley Petkun of Knit Picks had knitted hers with the same border. Kelley Petkun's Pi Shawl inspired mine. Now I *need* to find some vacation knitting. So much to knit and never enough time......
