Soldier of Orange (1977)
Netherlands 149m, Colour
Director: Paul Verhoeven; Cast: Rutger Hauer, Jeroen Krabbé, Susan Penhaligon, Derek de Lint, Edward Fox, Belinda Meuldijk
An episodic war drama based on the invasion and occupation of the Netherlands by Nazi Germany, Soldier of Orange is the story of a group of college friends whose experiences are followed throughout the entirety of the war. After Holland’s swift defeat, some continue the fight as spies or soldiers for the allies, while others become collaborators, or end up as victims of the Nazi occupation. Though seen through a number of eyes, much of the story revolves around Rutger Hauer’s character, Erik Lanshof, who initially embraces the excitement of the war. By war’s end, however, Erik has not only lost his innocence, but many of his friends in this sweeping depiction of Holland’s war experience (Klaus Ming June 2013).
