Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics

Research in the institute covers a broad range of linguistic topics, focusing on Estonian and other Finno-Ugric languages but also including other languages. We teach Estonian and several other Finno-Ugric languages. The quality of our linguistic research and teaching is evident from our placement in the top 200 universities in the world in the field of linguistics (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024). Our researchers investigate aspects of morphosyntax, semantics and phonetics as well as sociolinguistics, language acquisition, and computational linguistics.

Our institute has 4 departments, 2 laboratories and 5 centres, including 1 interdisciplinary consortium. The institute employs 105 people, including 9 professors, 11 associate professors, 16 lecturers, 23 researchers, 3 junior lecturer, 28 junior researchers and 2 teachers. The institute has 5 programmes: including 1 Bachelor's programme, 3 Master's programmes and 1 Doctoral degree programme. There are 248 students, including 99 in Bachelor's studies, 106 in Master's studies and 43 in Doctoral studies. There are 15% foreign students in the institute.
