I cannot say enough good things about this keyboard and this company. As a 20F with chronic and at times disabling hand/wrist pain (likely undiagnosed hEDS), a split and tilted keyboard paired with a vertical mouse has been critical to my ability to keep using a computer.
I was a bit intimidated by how sophisticated the keyboard is with all the layers and switches and such. I worried that this was more for techies than someone like me. That said, the team at Keebio was so kind and explained everything to me. After using the keyboard for the last 3 months, I am now using the Colemak layout along with some customized keys for things I do at work all the time (like a single key for cmd shift 5, keys for copy and paste, and a key that pastes text I have to use a lot). It is taking me a bit longer to learn layers but there are already ones I use frequently. All to say, I am so glad I took the leap!
Before this, I had the Kinesis Freestyle2. Although it worked well for pain management, it was heavy, large, and clunky. Lugging it around was challenging. In comparison, my Keebio set up is light, compact, and portable. The case (I got the larger one) can fit all my keyboard parts and I am sure it will last far longer since it is protected in my backpack. I took it all over Europe as I backpacked for a month and it worked great!
One of my favorite aspects of this keyboard is that I can use it directly on top of my Macbook laptop. No longer am I limited to tables with enough room for my computer and a large keyboard. I've used it on the train, in bed with my cat, on the plane, on the couch, sitting on the floor... This means I now use it way more than I ever did my old keyboard which is great for reducing my flares. I can't wait to be able to use it next semester in college where I will finally be able to type notes in classes with chairs with tiny computer platforms!!
I am not someone who usually writes reviews but this company truly has me impressed. Chronic pain/disability friendly, yep! Small business, absolutely! Great customer support, the best! And the rare device that can actually be fixed/has replaceable parts!! (I am so done with the planned obsolescence that pervades technology companies.)
Really good quality keyboard highly recommend
Decided that for the office I wanted a slightly less expensive board that I would feel okay with leaving at work, and also that I wanted to dive back into the world of split keyboards ever since I had an Ergodox that I loved but then sold. This caught my eye for the price and speed of shipping, so I jumped on and bought a B stock kit. Overall, the board is very easy to build and there is nothing out of the ordinary for that. The B stock has some noticeable things that make it clearly B stock, but nothing that bad and nothing that ruins the board.
Overall, I am very pleased with the purchase and even decided to order the tenting kit as I am realizing that was a big part of why I was able to hit my normal WPM on the Ergodox when I had it.
I've used split ergonomic keyboards for decades, and have gone through a few keyboards in that time. Most recently I moved to a Logitech k860, which is was great for just 2 years before 2 keycaps broke off and I discovered Logitech doesn't have replacement parts, nor does _ANYBODY_ on the internet.
I'd tried going to a split mechanical keyboard with a pre-built Sofle ortholinear, but turns out I really really don't vibe with ortholinear. Sold that and got the Cepstrum (pre-built). It's wonderful, and I love that this might very well be the last keyboard I buy. Got it about a year ago so this is a review after that time.
Pros:
* It's nice and small on my desk. I added some DIY tenting, and it's really wonderful to be able to position the halves of the keyboard exactly where I want (and I can stick an Apple trackpad in between).
* The keycaps are "soft" in a very pleasant way. Compared to cheap keycaps … night and day. They feel great.
* The LED lighting makes me happy. I stick to simple gradients and solid colors but it adds a nice splash of color to my day.
* Via is really nice and easy to work with.
Other:
* I got the version with the macro keys. I don't really use them for much. Not a fault of the keyboard, and having them on the left side may make the two halves more balanced.
* The spacebars have just 1 switch but are a little over 2 wide. Not really an issue but I'm starting to wonder about lubricating those switches.
* After a year on the Choc Browns, I'm contemplating going to a lighter-weight linear option. It's nice to have the option to change the keel while maintaining a high-quality keyboard that could last for many years to come.
very comfortable and excellent for traveling!
Best keyboard I’ve owned. Love everything about. The footprint and feel is premium and fantastic.
Really nice build quality on this, the thumb cluster is well designed, pops right up in VIA for easy remapping. I do wish we had south facing LEDs but thats minor. Highly recommended!
The kit arrived pretty quickly and was a joy to assemble and really straightforward. It's great for having an introduction into this type of keyboards without having to spend a huge amount of money or having to go through a lengthy soldering process. It's my first ergo so I'm still getting used to the new layout
This keyboard is a great starter keyboard I'd you're looking to get into custom split keyboards. Maybe even a good endgame keyboard.
Assembly was easy, due to very easy to follow instructions.
Great product. The aluminum frame with drop’s Kailh Jade switches makes it sounds like a typewriter. Very happy with the purchase.
This is my second iris, you can see in the pictures that I had the original MX Iris (Rev 7) first. Ever since I got my first Iris, I wanted to try a low profile split keyboard that gives me a better wrist angle for my typing style. Since getting the CE, my first Iris has been packed away!
Super easy to assemble, no soldering needed. The Iris (MX or low profile) is honestly one of the easiest ways to get into the split ergo scene without having to do any soldering, but while being able to customize which switches and keycaps you want.
The aluminum plates feel great. I use sunset chocs with DDC keycaps. I also use a magnetic cable so that it is easy to switch sides without having to stress the USB-C port. I modified the firmware to have VIA with 6 layers, with two separate base layers for Windows and macOS.
Thank you Keebio for making this awesome product!
Love this thing.
I actually selected it based on the price but it turns out this keyboard brings unique features to the world of mechanical keyboards and I couldn't be happier with it.
I paired it with a standard set of keycaps (mystery set from cannon keys) and asked Keeb.io to let me order switches separately. Super nice of them to be flexible on that! I went with Haimu Whisper Tactiles and am in love with the build.
This was my first time soldering a keyboard from PCB and I was surprised at how easy and fun it was to put together.
I am also extremely happy with the dead-simple programmability of each individual keys, and the built-in LED underglow doesn't hurt either.
Very fun keyboard to type on! Highly recommendedd especially to the budget conscious. I'm racking my brains to figure out why this is cheaper than other split keyboards. Beats me!
So fun to type on, and the ortho layout only took me a couple of days to adjust to, having never used one before.
I enthusiastically recommend this keyboard, well done by Keebio!
I love my sinc so much for gaming. Most of the day i keep both halves out, but I can stash away the right half and get back so much mouse room it's insane. Plus the macros are useful for artisan displaying. Wonderfully board
I've built three of these now in assorted generations of PCB and they are all great. I love the rotary dials and the full-sized split board (I can't lose my function keys). If you made an Ortho linear version I'd probably end up with 3 of those too.
I recently bought an Iris 8, this was my 2nd Iris and it's just an amazing design. It fits my hands well, the layout is practically perfect, and the ease of use, especially with the via support is fantastic.
The customer service from the vendor is top notch, and if you choose ANY of their boards you will not regret it.
IMHO - the Iris is his best design, but the others are extremely valid and whichever one resonates for you should be grabbed ASAP
