Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE) announces The BAKE Blog Awards
In a bid to reward exceptional bloggers and to also promote content creation in Kenya, BAKE will be organizing bloggers awards this year under the moniker ‘BAKE Blog Awards‘.
The idea is to recognize bloggers that post consistently, have great and useful content, and are creative and innovative.
There will be a submission phase starting March 15th where blogs will be nominated in 14 categories as below:
1. Best Technology Blog
Blogs that cover tech matters like social media, internet usage, consumer electronics, mobile phones, tech startups etc.
2. Best Photography Blog
Blogs that showcase original photos or have photography related content.
3. Best Creative Writing Blog
Blogs that feature original creative writing in the form of poetry, fiction and essays.
4. Best Business Blog
Blogs that feature business content like business development, entrepreneurship, startups, stocks, investments, banking etc
5. Best Food Blog
Blogs that focus on food, cooking tips, restaurants, wines and recipes
6. Best Agriculture Blog
Blogs that focus on Farming, marketing of agricultural produce, and environmental impact of climate change
7. Best Fashion Blog
Blogs that highlight current trends in Fashion as well as personal grooming, fashion shows
8. Best Politics Blog
Blogs that cover political issues in Kenya.
9. Best New Blog
Outstanding Blogs that were set up from March 24th 2011 onwards.
10. Best Corporate Blog
Blogs run by companies.
11. Best General Blog
Blogs that features content that is exceptional but doesn’t don’t fit into any of the other 13 categories.
12. Best Sports Blog
Blogs that feature sports content.
13. Tweep of the Year – Individual
The best individual twitter user in Kenya.
14. Tweep of the Year – Corporate
The best corporate twitter user in Kenya.
The submission phase will run until March 29th and then judges will choose their best 5 in each category. The judges will be drawn from the media and the blogging community.
After the judges pick their best 5 in each category, they will then be voted for by the public from April 10th. The winners in each category will be announced at a gala event on April 28th.

#WamathaiMarch: A Review
March 11, 2012 — JolieaPoetry in Kenya is becoming big. Big in business, big in followers, big in content too. Anyone who’s into poetry knows that nowadays they’re spoilt for choice when it comes to which gigs to go to, who to keep an eye out for and so forth.
The Wamathai.com hosted Spoken word events started happening as far back as June 2010 and has been going strong. By far yesterday’s event was the best yet!
The Wamathai Spoken Word – March 2012 Edition was held at the beautiful Michael Joseph Centre at Safaricom House along Waiyaki Way. It started at 4pm and ended just past 7pm. The event was proudly hosted by Wamathai.com and Safaricom Ltd. Below is an account of what happened.
The event, hosted by Wanjeri ‘Mawazo Mengi’ Gakuru and Marcus Olang began with an opening act by SLAP – Sounds Like A Plan – a group that promotes East African House. Quite something! They were followed by Nuru Bahati performing some conscious messages on society and its ills. One couldn’t help but listen and ponder.
Quickly scanning the beautiful room, I saw screens with a slide show of SamiKhan’s beautiful photography. He was also moving around taking shots of the people around as well as the performers. The smooth @dwanzi_ gave us two poetry pieces.
Sentimental Floetry (Namatsi Lukoye, Carol Njenga & Vivian Wambui) are another group that really caught my eye. Their first piece went something like “…calling her mama pima, saying she obeys your thirst, and gives you daima….”! Then they did yet another beautiful piece mixed with some music that was about love and a broken heart, with accusations here and there. I almost shed a tear!
Michael Kwambo graced us with two pieces, and I couldn’t help remember the one he opened with: Seventh Heaven. Right after was this guy with an extraordinary way of playing the guitar! You had to be there to see this! The kind of music he produced was out of this world!
Kahawa came on stage and performed several pieces, starting with their rendition of Wakawaka. I particularly loved their own compositions. Very original!
As usual, KennetB came with exemplary performances, beginning with a short film, produced and directed by him, on nature. It was brilliant. A spoken word piece with imagery and sound effects. Bravo! His friends also didn’t dissapoint.
The beautiful talented Wanjiku Mwaurah performed next a piece by Mutabaruka known as “Dis Poem” .. it caught the attention of everyone with its witty, crafty lines such as “dis poem is not a poem”!
I left shortly after, my mind, heart and soul filled with warmth, questions, thoughts, love and peace all intertwined together. Truly I was glad I didn’t miss it.

Wamathai Spoken Word March, a poetry, music and photography showcase, is on Saturday 10th March 2012 at The Michael Joseph Centre, Safaricom House on Waiyaki Way.
The event will be hosted by Sam Buggz and Wanjeri Gakuru.
There will be Poetry Performances by: Wanjiku Mwaurah, Mwende Ngao, Mike Kwambo, Kuni Mbichi, Kennet B, Nuru Bahati, Tear Drops, Kaffy Mwangi, Gathoni, Le Cleric, Asali, Sentimental Floetry [Namatsi Lukoye, Carol Njenga & Vivian Wambui], Ben Tena, KayKay, Amos, Luki and many more.
Music by: Sounds Like A Plan [SLAP] and Kevin Mbulaa
The event will feature a photo exhibition by photographer Sami Khan [Check out his work here].

Seesmic Assigns Male Gender to All?
February 28, 2012 — JolieaSo I’m busy working & tweeting at the same time (attempts at multitasking, futile me thinks sometimes) and I notice something….
I check on a tweep’s data and Seesmic tells me “Relationship: This user is following you but you are not following him” yet the user in question is a “Caroline”. So I wonder, is this an anomaly? I check another tweep:
Again the same thing!
Question is, how come Seesmic is giving people a ‘him’ for everyone? (This is so even for tweeps with a male name) And two, why is it even necessary to assign a gender to a tweep?
I know one or two people will tell me that its useful for market stuff and bla bla bla, to me, it isn’t. If we are all for equality, then why not use other variables to gauge our likes and dislikes aside from the gender marker we have/choose to use? We can already see that there are so many people who dance around the grey area of the black and white gender spectrum than we think are there. If anything, the so called ‘strict’ gender binaries have fewer populations than is known or claimed!
Thought I should give you a heads up. Think about it. FYI, I have nothing against Seesmic. Maybe they have their reasons. This particular item just made me wonder. I hope it makes you wonder too.
