Hello Aoife Murphy! James Murphy of the 1932 Olympic Boxing Team is my grand uncle also. His brother, Michael Murphy, was my grandfather. He immigrated to San Francisco. In 1932 he took the family to Los Angeles to see his brother in the Olympics. I have a picture of him with my grandmother and grandfather (Julia and Michael Murphy) my mom, my uncle and aunt.

Three very sad deaths in this family. Wonderful research. Have you seen the book that Diarmid, who, commented above, has put together? If not, let me know and I will send a link to it.

Fascinating post. The portraits are wonderfully revealing of each person’s personality. The circumstances of the making of the series is also very interesting.

Yes, he didn’t get much of an innings, poor boy. I didn’t get to include the fact that Sermonda’s daughter was a chess champion! A very interesting family.

I mean Randulphus. As if it’s not bad enough that he died so young, some 21st-century idiot goes and spells his name wrong.

These two Ross Studio portraits which I recognised immediately were taken NOT by Edmund Ross of Grafton St but, by his uncle Joseph Ross of 3 St Stephens Green, where I worked for many years in the late 60´s. J. Ross was a portrait artist, I have yet to come across his equal.

No contact….I would be so pleased if you responded. These pictures mean so much to our family.
]]>Yes, Edmond Ross was a nephew of Joseph Ross. If there is anything I can help you with I would gladly oblige. I have been living in Spain since I stopped working at Ross Studios. I used to hand paint some of the oil painted portraits, as, at the time that was a speciality of Joesph Ross Studios.
]]>Thanks for this. I’d love to chat to you about Joseph Ross. I ascribed the portraits to ‘Ross Studios’ as stamped on the photos and referred to the Edmund Ross as I knew there was a family connection. The advertisements shown above give the address as 3 Stephen’s Green.
