It’s that time again, what seems to have become my annual post on this music blog, where a new album or song release just pushes me out of the family, work, running or just general life traffic jam we all find ourselves in at times. We must prioritise our interests into manageable bites between the inevitable daily tasks of housework, changing insurance companies, signing up for trail races or buying tickets to gigs that won’t happen anytime soon.
“I Didn’t Love You when I said I Did and I Don’t Now” has done just that, a jangly guitar opening with Sarah Deegan’s endearingly soft and powerful vocal pulling you in instantly, before the full weight of the feedback laden lead guitar and rhythm section arrive like the realisation echoed in the opening lyrics. That by your late twenties you probably won’t have figured out any of the shit you thought you might at 22. After you have finished your first set of those slow head bangs reserved for that particular anthemic sound you find here, you don’t get much chance for respite as the song drives on regardless of your ability to keep up. Deegan’s vocals continue that trick of sounding soft without ever once being overpowered by the huge sound behind them. The track rises to a crescendo towards the end making me desperately miss the ear thumping, crowd swaying claustrophobia of a crammed backroom in Whelans.
It’s definitely a track to put on your headphones and lose yourself for it’s 3.31s and maybe feel just a hint of what we will get back when live music returns and we get to hear a track like this in all it’s true glory.
