In the wake of the HSUS Chino slaughterhouse investigation, several members of Congress are now calling for video cameras to be installed at slaughterhouses. Naturally, the USDA is dead set against this. Here’s an opportunity to grab ahold of this issue and take advantage of this window of opportunity
It’s unanimously agreed (if veg*an or not) that the animal agriculture industries from factory farms to the arbittior has “fox in the hen house status”. This pending legislation is pivotal on many levels of reasoning: Of course for the welfare of the animals, for “food” safety, and lastly, because

Video cameras is certainly a step in a better direction for all concerned…. Ahhh…. except for the meat industry that is.

Hi Deb! My husband, Kaiser, and I volunteered at Poplar Spring last summer before we moved. I wanted to thank you so much for your blogs and beautiful pictures. We miss volunteering so much (especially me – I could do it for the rest of my life and be completely fulfilled).
Anyway, I remember some of the welfare vs. rights conversations we had and I wanted to thank you for not backing down. Our ideas have changed dramatically since we first went vegan, and I can’t believe some of the things I believed. I appreciate that you pointed us in the right direction.
We’re going to be volunteering in a couple weekends, when we visit the area. Hopefully we’ll see you then!

I’m glad that our conversations were helpful! I think a lot of us go through that when we’re new vegans or newly exploring some of the issues in a deeper way. It took me a few years, so much of it depends on what we’re exposed to.
I have thoroughly enjoyed perusing your blog. Your words are inspiring and your pictures are absolutely gorgeous. I live in Manassas VA and would love to make it out to Poplar one of these days and hopefully start volunteering. Keep up the amazing work.

It would be awesome if you could come out and volunteer at Poplar Spring! I go out every weekend now, but there are quite a few people who go out a couple times a month, or just whenever their schedules permit. (Just to say that you don’t have to be able to commit to going every week!)
There’s someone who volunteers on Sundays who is from Manassas, though her dog has been really sick and I’m not sure she’s been out regularly because of that. But I’ll ping her – if it worked out, maybe you’d be able to carpool, since you’re coming from the same area, more or less!

Right now, I’m only able to go when I have someone to keep an eye on Mina, who’s undergoing chemotherapy for canine lymphoma (https://missminabean.wordpress.com). I am going out this Sunday, though, because her chemo has been postponed while she recovers from side effects from last week’s drugs. I am a second year law student at Boston College Law School and am interested in writing a memo regarding the legality of these killings. I am hoping to turn this piece into something publishable in a law review/journal. I’m writing to ask for your help with promoting the new Cow Ribbon campaign this Mother’s Day.
The idea of the campaign is to bring attention to all of the mothers of the dairy industry who lose child after child so that humans can take their milk. So many people seem to be unaware of this fact.
We are making available an actual ribbon pin that people can wear on Mother’s Day – a simple way for each of us to start conversations about the dairy industry. The pin is really nice and I hope you’ll at least take a look at it and tell your friends and colleagues about it.
