EMAS CORPUS
Introduction
- The language corpus offers a useful resource in language pedagogy
- Help students in learning the systematicity of language in an interesting “linguistics puzzle”
- Brief History of corpus in Malaysia:
- An earlier corpus compiled by researchers at University Teknologi Malaysia (but it is unavailable)
- Recent effort by Malaysian learner’s corpus collected by University Malaya
- Recent effort by The English of Malaysian school students (EMAS corpus) by researchers from University Putra Malaysia
Objective
- to investigate language development based on data in the EMAS corpus using language production as well as lexical variety as indicators of development
Hypothesis
- developmental patterns can be implied by comparing the language use of the three different age groups
About EMAS Corpora (*the corpus used)
- collected in 2002 and consists of close to half a million words
- untagged and unedited learner corpus
- written data taken from three essays of 800 students (Year 5, Form 1 and Form 4)
- above average in English language proficiency
Methodology
- These students were asked to write three different essays (in different time)
- The First Essay: based on a pictures series, given an hour to write the essay, describing the events that happen during a fishing trip
- The Second Essay: write a essay entitled “The happiest day of my life”
- The Third Essay: essay that was selected by teachers, as part of the students regular school work
- Developmental patterns are examined by studying the language productivity as well as vocabulary use of the students
- Language productivity involves the amount of language produced, while vocabulary used refers to the sophistication of the vocabulary as well as the use of academic vocabulary based on a language corpus
Findings
- The study examines language development by comparing the performance of the three age levels with regards to their language productivity and vocabulary use
- Findings of this study can be summarized into:
1. Language Productivity
– increased cognitive maturity of older students, Form 4 students produce longer essays and more complex sentences
2. Range of Vocabulary
– the types to token ratio gradually increases from the lower to higher age groups, signifies that the older respondents use a wider range of vocabulary in their essays
3. Sophistication of Vocabulary
– Using specialized software RANGE, a vocabulary analysis program which gives an indication of the kind of vocabulary used.
– As a result, older students tend to use a wilder range of words and also more sophisticated.
Conclusion
- This article has presented the relevance of corpus data in investigating language development without having to analyze concordance lines.
- Used local learner corpus in order to highlight the existence of such corpora as well as the effectiveness of these corpora in corpus based studies
- By using the concordance and analysis, the result indicate some form of development in terms of language production as well as vocabulary range and sophistication
Implication
- This study is examined cross-sectionally and it can be introduce to a longitudinal element in future analyses
- Similar data can be collected in later years and compared against the value found in this study
- This study can be the benchmarks against which to compare future groups of students as well as assess the development of the language program in Malaysia

let’s just go str8 to the point. this is how she’d like it. short and simple. name: Sri Kandy Putri Naru. (and if by any chance you encounter with the word “skpn” well, it doesn’t mean Sek. Keb. Perempuan/Putri Nanas or Nangka watsoever! but it actually her name’s acronym!) Anyway, she is very passionate in her work especially in her studies. but this might be because she got nothing elso to do! her bf is soOoo far from here and her friends, well i don’t know, because i never saw her walking with friends to class except that she do talk with some of her classmate. this is her last semester, i’m not sure whether she’ll do Linguicyics or Literature for her Master or maybe she won’t continue at all, who knows! she’s very mysterious. always wear white tudung. never saw her in pink, orange, blue, black, purple, green etc. needless to say in flowery or leopard print tudung laa kan. apart from that, she is nice, cool to hang out with and if you need anything about previous courses (notes, assignments, midterm, books, word of advise etc) you can always ask her. that’s all.

New Attacks in West Darfur
Christina Hueschen
On the ground – Sudan’s armed forces launched an offensive in West Darfur on February 8 with the supposed aim of clearing out rebel fighters from the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). But residents of the targeted towns Abu Surouj, Suleia and Sirba, and surrounding villages, say the rebels had left days before the attacks. The violence was the region’s worst in months and affected up to 60,000 Darfuris, 12,000 of whom fled into Chad. Locals say more than 100 civilians were killed.
Today, Sudan’s army clashed again with Darfur rebels in the mountainous Jabel Moun area. The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) withdrew a team caring for refugees from the Chad/Darfur border after today’s fresh aerial bombing. In diplomacy – American President George W. Bush paid somber homage today to the estimated 800,000 killed in Rwanda’s 1994 genocide. President Bush, who is currently on a five-country Africa tour, urged global action to end the bloodshed in Sudan’s Darfur region “once and for all.” He called again for a “robust” UN/African Union peacekeeping force Darfur, and insisted that China must act “collaboratively” on efforts to end violence there. The president of Chad declared a 15-day nationwide state of emergency on Thursday. President Idriss Deby said the emergency powers, which include a night-time curfew and controls on the movement of vehicles, are needed to restore order after the recent coup attempt in the capital. In the activist movement – US film director Steven Spielberg withdrew last week as an artistic adviser for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. In a statement, he accused China of not doing enough to pressure Sudan to end the “continuing human suffering” in western Darfur.

When I am dead, and over me bright April
Shakes out her rain drenched hair,
Tho you should lean above me broken hearted,
I shall not care.
For I shall have peace.
As leafey trees are peaceful
When rain bends down the bough.
And I shall be more silent and cold hearted
Than you are now.
