Postcards to Tacloban in Action: Another set of POSTCARDS TO TACLOBAN came in the mail today for us to hand deliver to survivors of haiyan. Thank you RaeJoyce Anloague Baguilat and thank you to your students!
One of our medical mission leaders, Dr. Ariel Tolentino, is currently admitted to the hospital for emergency open heart surgery. Please view the video here for a message from him.
Dr. Tolentino is the mission leader for the Paluan, Mindoro Occidental medical mission scheduled to begin March 2. That mission has been postponed to a later date.
The Feb. 25 medical mission headed by Baron Cabalona to Tacloban City is still scheduled as before. Dr. Tolentino will still support the Feb. 25 mission via Skype.

ILPRO Newsletter, Feb. 20, 2014: Bangon Visayas!
We take pains to write a newsletter that could be e-mailed out because more than once we’ve had donations come in after someone sent their contacts an e-mail about the Illinois Philippine Recovery Operations.
Whether the e-mail contained our current newsletter, it’s still heartening to know that we can reach people even without social media. Most fundraisers and groups rely on social media to spread the word, and if a key contact opts out of Facebook, for example, it’s great to know we have a fallback.
We hope you take a moment to read and pass along the word about our latest issue, “Bangon, Visayas!”

The next several weeks will be crucial for the volunteers of the Illinois Philippine Recovery Operations who are scheduled on flights to the Philippines.
Tacloban and the many other cities affected by Typhoon Haiyan face a long road to recovery. ILPRO hopes to help make that road a little easier to traverse.
The first phase are medical and dental missions to Tacloban on Feb. 25 and Paluan, Mindoro Occidental on March 2. The missions are modelled after previous expeditions lead by Ariel Tolentino, MD, RN; details can be found in this concise video and in the following schedule below, provided by Dr. Tolentino. Dr. Tolentino is currently very busy ironing out details on the medical missions, which he had been either assisting with or conducting for 30 years. But here are some pictures of his progress:

Some of the ILPRO team had already flown to the Visayas (using their own funds) to begin preparations for the medical and rebuilding missions. Some are currently in contact with potential recipients for further evaluation. Some are still gearing up for the long trip ahead. They’ll bring receipts, cameras, computers and other recording equipment to document their progress. We look forward to hearing from them very soon.
As we had gleefully posted in our last newsletter issue, the Jan. 25 fair had raised $10,030 at night’s end. This is before collectibles, Filipino Night Out with the Chicago Bulls ticket sales, online donations, and other donations.
We are now up to $10,607!

We received an e-mail not too long ago asking us if we also took in donations in-kind. We currently don’t have the capacity to take in donations of clothing, food, supplies and medicine. But please take a moment to visit the Philippine Embassy’s Web site for leads and tips on how to help in-kind.
We face a long road ahead of us to recovery, but no help is too small. Maraming salamat for keeping typhoon-affected areas of the Philippines in your thoughts and prayers.
