Nice gallery! And yes, lots of diversity out there in our gardens — it has been an especially good year for butterflies I have observed.

An abundance of garlic scapes makes for great freezer pesto. I add in cashews to give it a bit of a creamier and nuttier taste…its delish!

thanks! the weather certainly cooperated this year…i almost have too much! ended up with 6 quarts of kimchi, and that’s only using half of the cabbages that are ready. there’s a bit of a heat wave going on, so i see LOTS of stir fries in my future…

Hi there. I just bought a place in the District, and have built a raised bed out front in which to plant some vegetable seedlings, after a bit of hardening (alas, my front yard is a bit too tiny, and I was thinking of supplementing the bed with some 5-gallon nursery pots). Today, one of my neighbors, surely looking out for my best interest, commented that she believed that there were prohibitions against growing edible plants in one’s front yard. Have you heard of such a thing?

I just got a garden plot this year and grew some plants in pots rather than directly in the ground–hops, sweet potato, mint. I didn’t want to have to combat with them forever and ever, I wanted them contained. Next year, I might go your route and even bury the pots so I won’t have that summer heat/pot drought issue all the time!
Also, I need a case like yours for my orchids. I only got 5 mini ones at the orchid show last weekend, but that’s double what I used to have!
]]>And because they need an excuse to buy the kids version of Settlers of Catan!

remember, you can always say that you’re simply growing flowers (all vegetables have flowers after all). It just so happens that their seed pods and seeds are edible!
